Specification of Letters Patent. 7 lPatntdSePttZQ 1915, Serial No. 68,324. Divided and this ap plication ifile'd November 17,1916. Serial No. 131,942. j y e with an outwardly projecting circumferential flange 17 having a depending lip 19 forming an annular recess beneath said flange. A packing washerfQl of rubber or recess andmay be secured therein'by slightly upsetting or bending 'in'the rim of the lip 19 if desired.
' A cap 23v has a rim .25 seated on the body fiange l7 aiid a depending lip 27 intimately embracing the flange lip l9. The lips may be tensioned somewhat when one is pressed into the other to assist holding them together. The cap may have a central portion 27 pressed outward from its rim to contribute to the stiffness ofithe cap and add to the ornamental appearancether'eof. V e V A- handle 29 conveniently diedlout of sheet copper or other suitable materialhas a' shank 81 entered through an elongated slot in the cap and presenting its lower. end in a lgroove or depression 33 in the bottom of the ody. The slot and groo e positively conmet the cap and body with the handle and prevent relative rotation thereof such as might loosen the cap lipifrom the body lip.
The handle may have shoulder 35 at the.
base of its shank'fo'r engagement-with the top of the cap to prevent the latter from slipping upward away from the body. 1 The lower end of the shank may be'solclered or otherwise permanently secured in the groove 33. The handlemay have-an eye 37 therein 7 whereby thebottle 7 may be 'readilyhung from a'hook' if desired. i" 7 7 n The inner wall ofthe neck has a'threaded portion 39'int'ermediate its ends adapted to receive the threaded body. of the stopper.
At the upper end of this threaded portion,
a circumferential shoulder 41 of sufiicient width to receive the packing washer 21. The shoulder'preferably has a circumferential rib 43'forming a seat adapted for-tight fit with the washer.
The vented cooling chamber between the outer and inner wallsof the neck is an important feature of the bottle. To further contribute to the cooling ofthe neck, the cap of the stopper may have vents45therein permittingthe free circulation of airinto the body of-the stopper. f Heretofore the ,pac 'ngs min #9 be freq nt y sweetening to the destructive action of the hot water thereon. By my construction this objection has been obviated,-si-nce the washer is located adjacent the top of the stopper externally thereof, remote from the body of the hot" Water in the bottle, and the vents in the same, it would very substantially increase the temperature of the neck, but the ventilation thereof as described materially contributes to the maintaining of the neck at a temperature sufliciently low to permit the same to be comfortably grasped by the hand.
The body, cap and handle may all be readily died from sheet material and the body and cap mayzbe pressed into their proper form and assembled in few and simple operations with a small expenditure of materials A r r l/Vhile the stopper has been described here in more particularly with reference to its use in hot water bottles, it will be understood its field of use is not restricted thereto.
Having described one illustrative embodiment of the invention without limiting the same thereto, what I claim as new and desir'eto secure by Letters Patent is v l. A stopper comprising in combination a tubular screw threaded seamless body closed at the bottom and having a circumferential flange at the top thereof, a capv for said top having a rim fitting said flange, a packing washer received by said flange, andahandle projecting upwardly. from said cap, said stopper being: adapted for engagement with the feinalethreaded neck of a container providing an exterior seat for said packing washer.
2'. A stoppercomprising in combinationa tubular body portion having an outwardly extending flangeat'the upper end thereof and a downwardly extending flange at the outer edge of said outwardly extended flange, a cap for the top of said body portion embracing said-"outwardly extending flange and having a downwardly extending flange surrounding the downwardly extending flange on the body portion, said'downwardly extending flanges providing an anwardly extending flange,- said flanges providing an annular recess for a packing washer.
4:. A stopper con'iprising a body having a circumferential flange, a depending lip formingan-ex-ternal recess, and a closed bottom, a packing washer seated in said recess and having its lower face exposed, a cap for said body, and a handle member of irregular,
cross-section: projecting through said. cap and secured to the closed bottom of said body.
5..A stopper comprising'a body havinga circumferential flange, adepending lip forming an'external recess, and a closed bottom, a packingwasher seated in said recess, a cap for said body, and a handle member projecting through said cap and secured to the closed bottom of said body, said handle member being died from a flat plate and entering a depression in the bottom of said body.
6. A stopper comprising, a body 11 having a closed bottom and provided withaan outwardly projecting circumferential flange 17 providing an annular recess a packing 21 seated in said recess, a cap 2- for said body having cooling means,- 45 therefor, a handle member 29 passing through said cap.
In testimony whereof ,,.I have signedmy name to this specification.- K y t ALPHONSO s. cAMPBELnI Copies of this patent niay be obtained. for five cents each-By addressing the Commissioner of; Ilaiten'u, Washington, D; 0;
