Be it known that li, WILLIAM JCULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Joliet, in the county oi' Will and State of illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Container-Bodies, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates in general to container bodies and has more particular reierence to container or boX bodies construct ed of corrugated liber board.

A principal object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved connection between adjacent edges of such material in a boX or container body or part. j

Prior to my invention it has been generally the custom, in constructing boxes or containers or' various shapes and sizes or corrugated board. to bring the adjacent edges together and paste over them a cloth strip, one sometimes being pasted inside as well as outside. Another method of connecting the edgeshas been merely to overlap them and secure them in this position with an adhesive.

Containers and bores of this character are now replacing wood and metal containers to a considerable extent. Heavy materials may be packaged in them, as the board itself is readily constructed or sutiicient strength. The means ci fastening the ends together have, in the past, possessed far less strength than the strength of the corrugated board itself, and it is an object or this invention to provide a connection for fastening the edges together, which will materially in crease the strength of this connection and make it more nearly approximate the strength of the remainder or the package.

A 'further object of the invention is the provision-of such' a connection which will give to the bon a pleasing and nished appearance, and this without the utilization ci more material than has `heretofore been required and also without increasingmate rially the cost of production.

@ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preierred embodiment thereof.

The tongue l' is provided with an adhesive upon both of its faces and is then positioned in the recess l1, the inner and' outer plies 13 and il being pressed down upon it and then held by the adhesive. 'lhe rounding oi the corners facilitates the insertion et the tongue in its recess.

This provides a connection between the edges of the container or box of strength substantially equal to the strength of the board, and of strength much greater than that provided by securing the edges together with cloth; a comparative test of the clothsecured edges and the edges connected in accordance with my invention showing a tensile strength several times greater in the edges connected in accordance with my invention than in the edges connected by cloth.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the `foregoin description, and it will be manifest tha various changes may be made in the form, construction and material of the box and in the details of the connection between the edges without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

I claim:

1. A joint for corrugated fiber board comprising two outer fiat layers and an intermediate corrugated layer, which consists of the united ends of two sections of said board one arranged within the other, the corrugated layer of the inner sectionx being left intact, the corrugated layer of the outer section being entirely removed, and the inner faces of the outer flat layers being adhered directly to the outer faces of the inner fiat layers.

2. A joint for corrugated fiber board boxes, said board com rising two outer flat layers and an interme iate corrugated layer,

which consists of the united portions of 40 two sections of said board one arranged within the other, one section being a flap of said box the corrugatedlayer of which is left intact, and the other section being a contiguous side the corrugated layer of which is removed Where the flap is located, the fiat layers of which side embrace the said fla and the Hat layers of said side being ad ered directly to the outer faces of the flat layers of the flap.
