Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept., llt, :with
Application filed. August 7, 1911. Serial No. 642,725.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, .Ior-IN WILLIAM NA- SMITH, of Stockport, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CombingIachines, of which the following j is a specification.
4then moves back This invention relates to combing machines of the Heilmann type.v
In machines of this type the nippers have been given two kinds of movement: when receiving one kindof movement the nipper remains stationary in close proximity to the cylinder needles during the combing period, moves away toward the detaching rollers, remains stationary again in the proper position in proximity to the detaching rollers during the detaching period, and toward the cylinder needles; when receiving the other kindy of movement they are made to reciprocate uninterruptedly between the combing point and the detaching rollers by means of a crank or an eccentric or a cam giving a motion approximating to that of a crank. In the former case, when the movement is intermittent, the path followed by the point ofthe nipper between its two stationary positions has not hitherto been of great importance, but in the second case itis of great importance and has hitherto been either a straight line or an arc of a circle, or has closely `approximated to one of these.
As hereinafter described, the nipper must pass between two points andthe path of the nipper` is lsuch that during the combing it is not at` a constant distance from the cylinder needles while traversing the last portion of the path at the rearward or combing end C furtherthe length of the path is considerable and is determined by the diameters of the cylinder and the detaching roller. j
The chief obj ect of the present invention to shorten the path so that the movement of the heavy nipper may be reduced and it may follow a path that is much more favorable for its work: this path may be made much shorter than the paths followed by the nippers of combing` machines lhitherto constructed, and may be made to remain at a constant distance from the needles at the rearward or combing end C.
According to this invention and with the above mentioned object in view I guide the nipper point nf a combing machine of the Heilmann type, by any suitable means,
along a desired path between the combing point and the detaching rollers. This may be effected by oscillating the nipper pivot to give the nippera to and fro motion and providing independent means for guiding the point of the nipper along any suitable path between the combing and detaching points.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a. sectional side elevation showing one arrangement according to this invention Fig. 2 is sectional side elevation of a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. l; and
Fig. 8 is a similar view showing another arrangement also according to this invention.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic side elevation showing a preferred path of the nipper point.
In Fig. l, A indicates a portion of the cylinder of a combing machine, 9 one of the detaching rollers, C the combing point, and D the detaching point between which two points the nipper must pass.
First, referring more particularly to Fig. l, one end of a nipper frame l is pivoted on a stud 2 fixed in a lever 3 adjustable within certain limits on a shaft t, which is caused to oscillate to and fro in the required manner by a crank eccentric or cam. In a-suitable position near the other end of the nipper frame and fixed therein is a stud 5 which serves to carry a bowl 6 and on which may also pivot a top nipper' arm 7. Suitably attached to but adjustable on the framing is the support or guide 8 upon which the bowl 6 runs as the nipper moves to and fro, or the guide 8 may be made a fixture and the bowl 6 adjustable so as to set the nipper point at the proper distance from the cylinder needles. Any desired shape may be given tothe guide 8 so that-in combination with the movement of the pivot 2, the point of the nipper may be given any desired path, such as D C, Fig. 4, which during the rearward part is adjacent the periphery of the cylinder and rises at the forward end to approach more or less directly the nip of the detaching rollers 9, 10. In this way the total reciprocating movement between the combing and detaching positions may be much reduced.
Fig. 2 shows an alternative method of guiding the nipper j aoint, Attached to the pin 5 is a link 11 pivoting on a pin 12 inthe arm of a lever 13 keyed on a shaft 14 which is caused to oscillate at the proper time and in the proper manner so as in combination with the to and fro motion of the frame 1, to guide the point of the nipper `in any desired path.
Again, if it be desired to cause-the nipper point during the whole of its path to follow thev periphery of the cylinder as yWhen the usual rHeilmann detaching method is used, this maybe done (see Fig. 3) by giving the lever 3 the .same radius fas the cylinderand supporting the stud 5 in a link 15 also of thelksame 'radius as 3 and pivoted at l16. Thenif the point of the nipper be vertically above the center of the cylinder when centers 5 and 2 are vertically above centers 16 and t respectively the point of the nipper will follow a path ci c concentric with the cylinder.
The top nipper arm 7 (Fig. 1) has fixed Vin it a pin 17 upon which the slotted end ofthe rod 18 engages. The rod `1S carries an adjustable finger 19 having a slot in its upper part through which the bar 20 freely passes. The rod 20 is pivoted inthe back bar 21 vfixed to the machine framing. On the rod 2O between the linger 19 and the back 21 is a spiral spring 22 and on the rod 18behind thebaokbar an adjustable stop collar 23. If the frame l moves to the right carryingwith it the arm 7, it is obvious that after the nipper jaws are closed thestop collar will be pushed away `from the back bar and the spring 22 compressed, further pressing the jaws firmly together. Onthe other hand when the frame 1 moves to theleft and the stop collar 23 has come against the back bar the upper end of the arm carrying the pin 17 will be arrested while the pivot is carried forward by the frame 1 and the nipper is thus opened. The pressure of the spring 22 pressing against the finger 19 constantly keeps the rod 18 down on the pin 17, while permitting it to be easily lifted ofl" and pushed to one sidel when the wholenipper can be lifted clear ofthe cylinder for the purpose described in the specification of my application Serial No. 642,724, filed herewith.
It will be obviousthat the details of construction may be varied without departing `from this invention: for example means other than those shown could be devised for guidingthe nipper along any desired path; or the end of the nipper frame that is remote from the point' of the nipper may be supported and oscillated in any convenient manner other than those shown and described. I do not therefore conne myself to the constructions shown or to the precise paths indicated.
What I claim is i 1. In a combing machine provided with the usual combing, feeding and detaching means, a nipper adapted to Fhold the material during combing, means for actuating the nipper, andmeans for guiding the nipper during 'the combing, along a path which changes independently of the movement of the nipper actuating means.v
2. In a ycombing machine provided with the yusual combing, feeding and detaehing means, a nipper adapted to holdthe material during combing, an oscillatory support for the nipper, means operated by oscillation of saidy support to actuate the nipper, and means for guiding the `nipper during the combing, along Aa path which changes independently ofthe movement of v a cam supporting the freeend of said frame,
said cam being shaped to guide thenipper during the combing along a -pathv which changes independently of the movement of the nipper actuating means.
4. In a combing machine provided with the usual combing, feeding and detaching means, a rock shaft, an arm mounted on said rock shaft, a nipper frame pivotally connected at one end to said arm, a nipper car-V ried by the free end of said frame, and means situated between the rock shaft vand the nipper for guiding the latter, during the combing, along a path 'which changes independently of the .movement of thenipper actuating means.
In testimony whereof I have afliXed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
