In the said Tunstall Pat-ent No. 1,351,076 each nipper trame is hung to swing` on a stationary shaft 29 mounted in .trames A3, A4, A5, etc., the movement being` given to the nipper frames by means oi a sii/inging lever 12 mounted on a stud 18 (see Figs. 3, 7, 8 and 15 of said patent). My present invention includes the elimination ot the parts shown in Fig'. 15 ot said patent and the mountingr ot one shaft 29 on each side of the machine in such a manner that each will be rocked and carry with it the nipper 'trames which are keyed thereto and, in order that they may be rocked positively, l have ex:- tended downward from each` arms 10 t see Figs. 1, 5 and G) which are also keyed to the shafts 29. each arm being` adjustably connected with a lever 12 tulcrumed on'a stud 13 carried by the frame A2, and each. carrying near its lower end a bowl 14am)` at its extreme end a pin 15 to which is at tached a spring` by which its bowl is kept in contact with cam 16 mounted on the shaft 8. The cam 16 is suitably shaped. to give the desired movements to the nipper frames and the top comb mechanism attached to shafts 29. ln Fig. 1 the bowls 14 are engaging opposite surfaces ot the cani. The cam surtace, as shown on the right, has the largest radius and has a trueradius through an arc of a su'tlicient length to permit the nipper frames and top combs to remain stationary while the cylinder needles are combing; the tufts held by the nipper trames. To place the nippers in this position, the portion ot the cam having the largest and true radius has thrown the lower end of the lever 12 outward against the pull of the spring' 150,
thus rocking its arm 10 to the lett and turn-V ing the shaft 29, so that it has thrown its nipper trames to the left, that is, into closed position. The nipper trames thus nip the tufts to be combed, and remain stationary'. while the largest and true radius ot the cam is in contact with the bowl 14. The cam surtace, as shown on the lett, and those portiens ot the cam surface joining the lett hand portion with the true radial portion shown on the right, are so shaped as to allow the spring 150 to pull the lower end of the lett hand lever l2 to the right, thus rockingV its arm 10 to the lett and turning` the shaft 29, so that it will throw its nipper frames mounted thereon and top combs connected therewith outward with the nippers open, and also so shajed as to lrive the nipper trames and top combs an appropriate reciprocating movement. so that they may co-operate with the detaching rollers in detachinn` and piecing up the fleece.

On the upper side o't the arms 22 is mounted a plate 24 preferably ot hardened steel. From the top of each trame are hung brackets one on each side thereot corresponding' to the similar brackets 45 in the Tunstall patent, but diiterently shaped therefrom because by my invention l am able to do away with shait l?) of said Tunstall patent. ln the lower end oi two opposing' brackets are adjustably mounted two levers 25 each ot which carries at one end a bowl 2G adapted to rest upon one of the plates 24.y the other end ot each lever being attached to a spring' 45, the other ends ot these springs being' attached to a convenient portion ot the trarne. The tendency ot each ot these springs is to pull upward that end ot the lever to which it is attached and hold the bowls 26 against the plates It will be seen from this description that upon the inward movement ot one ot the nipper trames, say that on thel right ot Fig. the plate 24 will push against the rolls 2G and the corresponding upper nipper will be closerl against the lower nipper by a. yieidinpl pi.e.-fsure as in said patent. rlhe upper nipper is returned to open position by an arm 4l mounted on the end ot the shaft 21 and a cam surface 42 on the frames as shown in said patent which engage when the frames are drawn into forwa d position as shown at the left oit Fig. 4.
It will be seen trom Fig: El `that on these same shatts 29 are also keyed arms 32, a pair to each head or unit, which correspond to arms sin'iilarly numbered in said rlunstall application. To these arms, as shown, is attached a top comb 48 as in said application. Each shaft 29 thus causes the top comb to be oscillated at the same time that the nipper frame is oscillated. Hence the nipper frames and the top combs on each side `of the machine are caused to operate as a single structure and the swing of the `top combs and the nipper frames may be adjusted by the one adjustment of the shaft operating mechanism and that adjustment may be caused in the following way: Referring to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the arms 10 are each slotted near its lower end as at 11 and in the slet is mounted a block 2S which capable of sliding' therein. A. screw 30 passes through a lug 331 onv the upper end of the lever 12 and `through a swivel 31 mounted in the bloclr 28, this vscrew being provided with suitable set nuts. The rotation lof the screw 3 will change the location of the bloclr 28 inthe slot 11 .and hence will change the location of the connecting point or -pivot between the rocker arm 10 and the lever 12 so that the radius of swing of the arm 10 may be adjusted.
his same result may be secured by the modification shown in Fig. 6 where the lower end of the arm 10 is connected by a link 321 with the slotted end 33 of the straight lever 121 to which it is clamped by a screw block and clamp nut 34, an adjusting screw 35 being provided, as in Fig. 1. by which the position of the end of the link 32 may be adjusted with relation tothe upper end of the lever 121 when the clamp nut 34 is loosened.
For this purpose the upper end of the lever 121 is provided with a lug 36 through which the screw 35 passes and nuts 37 are also provided by which this adjustment may be made and the parts thereafter set. As shown, the
upper end of the lever 121 is thickened for strength.
It will be noted that the use of a cam 16 andsprings 15.0 for the purpose of throwing the nipper frames enables the nipper frames to be given their desired movements positively such that each nipper 'frame may have an active forward movement and may also be held stationary `while the combing cylinder is passing through the tuft, which is a very desirable feature as it allows the combling cylinder to perform its function with certainty and thoroughness. It allows it also to be given an appropriate movement to malte it co-operate to the best advantage with the det-aching rolls.
While it is undesirable in machines of this character that cams as a general rule should be used, the cani in this case given such light work and is of such size. that its wear will be negligible and this wear, if there be any, will not have the tendency to force the nippel-s into the combing' needles. The upper nipper is yielding because of the use of the levers 25 and springs 40 as in the Tunstall comber,

In Fig. 3 there are shown `pinions 89 and 891 each of which is fixed on the end `of a lower detaching roll and which are connected the idler 907011 stud 91. Pinion 89 vengages the `gea-r 92 on the clutch l) yon shaft 921 so that the clutch I), operated as `in said patents, drivespinion 89 which in turn drives the idler 90 and the pinion S91. The

The operation ofthe top `comb being fully desc 'ibed in the said application, it is not described here except to say for identification (see Figs. 3 and 4) that 140 is: a link one end of which is connected to the rocker arm 32 and the other is connected to the linlr 141 free to swing on shaft 142, but adjustably attached thereto `by means of the vplate 144 and the adjusting screwsv 146. The link 141 is fiXedly attached to the shaft 142 and to it is adjustably connected the arm 153. This mechanism is duplicated on the other side of the head and between the arms 153 the top comb 4:3 is mounted so'that the top comb will be reciprocated horizontally, the free arm 152 resting on the friction roll 156.
In Fig. 2 it will be noted that the gears 7 and 114e are slotted and show bolts c pass ing through the slots. For adjustment each shaft a and 8 has a disk eiland 81 fiXedly attached thereto. The gears are attached to these disks by the bolts c. rrlllhus the posi'- tion of the gears on the shafts may be adjusted.
It will be seen that while as shown in the drawings the nipper frames on both sides of the machine are operated alternately, the cam may operate either one v.of the sides alone as the nipper fra-ine and top comb mechanisms are entirely independent ef each other. Hence, as will be clear, my improvement is not essentially upon a. double-sided comber, but comprises a nipperfoperating mechanism which may be duplica-ted for use in a double-sided machine, for example in the way above Vdescribed and operated by a single cam or the like. lf the machine is built as a single-sided machine, the nipper frame and top comb may equally wellbe operated without change. In any case the nipper frame always comes back to the same point over the combing cylinder, this point being controlled by the shape of the cam surface. It must be re- '.nembered that the fibres on which the .nipper .frames act are very minute in character and a very slight change in the inward throw of the nipper f ame will vary the relation of the nippers to the combing cylinder, which would result in imperfect combing.

sillhat I claim'as my invention is:
l. In a. combing machine, an oscillatory shaft and means for oscillating it, a nipper frame fast thereon to swingtherewith and comprising a lower nipper lixedly mounted therein and an upper' nipper mounted to swing therein, and means adapted to cause lhe closing of one of said nippers upon the other during a portion of the swing thereof.
Q. In a combing machine, a'n oscillatory shaft and -means for oscillatingit intermittently, a nipper frame fast thereon to swing therewith and comprising an upper and a lower nipper', and means adapted to cause the closing of said nippers during a portion `of the swing,- thereof.
In a combing machine, an oscillatory haft and .means for oscillating' it intermittently, a nipper frame fast thereon to swing therewith and comprising an upper and a lower nipper, and means adapted to cause the closing of said nippers during a portion of the swing thereof and to hold them closed while said shaft and nipper frames are stationary.
4l. In a combing; machine, an oscillatory shaft and means for oscillating' it intermittently, a nipper frame fast thereon to swing' therewith and comprising an upper and lower nipper, means adapted to cause the closing of said nippers during a portion of the swing' thereof, and a top comb and means for connecting it to said shaft whereby it will be given an intermittent horizontally reciprocating` movement simultaneously with said nipper frames and said nipper' frames being' held in closed position and in fixed relation to said topcomb duringsaid stationary period.
5. In a combing mechanism, an oscillatory shaft, a nipper frame fast thereon, a top comb connected to said shaft, and means for oscillating' said shaft., whereby said nipper frame and said top comb will be operated simultaneously, and means for oscillating` said shaft.
6, In a combing mechanism, an oscillatory shaft and means whereby it is given an intermittent oscillatory movement, a nipper frame faston said shaft to be moved thereby, a top comb and means connecting it to said shaft, whereby it will be given a horizontal movement.
7, In a combing' mechanism, an oscilatory sin "t, and means for giving it an intermittent oscillatory movement comprising a cam, a nipper frame lixedly mounted on said ft. a lower nipper ixedly mounted on frame and an upper nipper mounted to oscillate in sa'id frame, and yielding' means whereby said upper nipper' will be closed on said lower nipper with a yielding pressure.
8. In a combingl machine, an oscillatory shaft, a plurality of nipper frames all mounted on said shaft to oscillate therewith and a single means for actuating said shaft whereby said plurality of nipper frr-:mes will be operated equally and simultaneously b7 the single actuating means said means cinnprising,` an arm hxedly attached to said shaft, a lever suitably mounted and attached at one end to said arm, its path of a. cam. and said cam, whereby said lever and said arm will be rocked.

In a combing machine, an oscillatory shaft, a plurality of nipper frames mounted on said shaft to oscillate therewith, a plurality of top combs connected to said shaft, and a single means for actuating said shaft whereby a plurality of nipper frames and top combs will be operated simultaneously by a single actuating means to co-operate in presenting the lap for combing'.
10. In a double-sided comber, two oscillatory shafts, nipper frames mounted on each shaft to oscillate therewith and a single means and connections between said single means and said shafts whereby the operation of said single means will oscillate. both of said shafts and the nipper frames mounted thereon.

In a combing machine, an oscillatory shaft, a plurality of .nipper frames all mounted on said shaft 'to oscillate therewith, each nipper frame comprising a lower nipper iiXed thereto and an upper nipper adapted to swing therein, means whereby said upper nipper may be yielding'ly held intermittently against said lower nipper', a single means for actuating said shaft, and connections whereby the oscillation of said shaft will cause the swinging of said nipper' frames and of the upper nippers in said fra mes.

In a combing' mechanism, a nipper frame and means for oscillating' it compris-A ing( a turnable shaft, said nipper frame being fast thereon, and means for giving' said shaft an intern'iittent oscillatory movement con'iprising a. cam and means connected to said shaft and located to be operated by said cam, said connection being adjustable other end beine' located in the 90 whereby the length of the oscillations of said shaft and of said nippel' frames may be adjusted.
13. In a combing mechanism, a nipper fl'ame and means for oscillating it comprising a turnable shaft., said nipper frame be ing fast thereon, and llleans for giving said shaft an intermittent oscillatory movement comprising a cam and means connected to said shaft and located to be operated by said caln, said nipper frame having a lowel' nipper fiXedly mounted thereon and an upper nippel' pivotally mounted therein, means adapted to engage said upper nippel' and close it against said lower nippel' and hold it closed between the oscillations of said f 'ame wllile said nippel' frame is in combing position.
lll. In a double-sided comber, two oscillatory shafts and a single means connected to each shaft whereby said shafts will be oscillated in the same direction simultaneously, nippel` frames mounted on said shafts to be swung thereby,

In a double-sided combel', a pail' of shafts, nippel1 frames located back to back and mounted to be operated by said shafts, and means comprising a cam and ,connecltions with said shafts to be operated by said 2am alternately whereby said nippel' frames will be swung toward and from a position to deliver the combed .fibers to the detaching lnecllanisln.
16. In a double-sided comber two oscillatory shafts and a single means connected to each shaft whereby said shafts will be oscillated in the same direction simultaneously, nippel' frames mounted on said shafts to be swung inwardly and outwardly thereby, each nipper frame carrying an oscillatory upper nippel' mechanism mounted therein and spring controlled levers having fixed pivots, said levers being located to engage said upper nipper mechanism to close said upper and lower nippers with a yielding pressure while their nipper frames are swung inward.
17. In a colnbing machine, all oscillatory shaft, a nipper fralne hung on said shaft to bel oscillated thereby, said nippel frame carrying a lower nippel1 fixed thereto whereby said lower nippel' will be positively oscillated and all nppel nippel' mounted to swing in said frame, and yielding means for closing said upper nippel' against said lower nippel'l whereby the relative movements of said upper nippel' will depend llpoll the location of the lower nippel' in its oscillations.
18. In a colnbing machine having combillg cylinders, an oscillatory shaft, a nippel' frame mounted thereon to be swung thereby, means for oscillating said sllaft whereby said nippel' frame will always be brought to a fixed position adjacent to said combing cylinder. l 19. In a combing machine having'combing cylinders, all oscillatory shaft, a nipper frame mounted thereon to be swung thereby, means for oscillating said shaft whereby said nippel' frame will always be brought to a fixed position adjacent to said combing cylinder and means for adjusting the length of swing of said nipper frame away from the combing cylinder.
20. In a combing lnaclline, an oscillatory shaft having a plurality of nippel' frames mounted thereon to swing therewith and a single means whereby the outward swing of the nipper frame may be adjusted.
