To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN JooHUMsEN,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Buchanan, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in. swings, and has for its object to provide a device of this character particularly adapted for use in households or porches.

A further object of the invention is to provide a swing of this type so constructed that the occupant thereof can impart movement to the swing upon actuation of a hand bar.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a swing which can be easily and quickly adjusted-to different heights.

With these and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.

The swing comprises a seat 1, said seat having vertical bars 2, the lower ends of which are fixed to the sides of the seat, and fixed to the upper ends of the bars 2 are arms 3. A back bar 4: has its ends connected to the rear ends of the arms 3.

The seat 1 has formed in its front and rear edges openings 5 which are engaged by the rope 6, said rope extending under the seat, as at 7 and having its end 8 engaged with an eye 10, said eye being carried by a sleeve 11, said sleeve having a tortuous passage 12 formed therein for engaging the rope 6 at a point above the arms 3. The rope 6 is also passed through the openings 13 formed in the rear ends of the arms 3.

The upper end of the rope 6 is provided with a ring 14 which is adapted to engage the hooks 15, which may be supported by the ceiling of a room or porch, and spaced from hooks 15 are pulleys 16, which are also supported by the ceiling and in advance of the hooks. It will be of course understood that a pair of ropes are employed for suspendingthe swing seat.

Thimbles 17 are attached to the rope 6 adjacent the upper ends thereof, and engaged with the rings 18 carried by the thimbles are the upper ends of the ropes 19, said ropes being engaged with the pulleys 16 and having their lower ends connected to thehand bar 20, said hand bar having openings formed therein for slidably engaging the ends 8 of the rope 6, and since the ends 8 are disposed in advance of the seat 1 the occupant of the seat can grasp the bar 20 and upon raising and lowering the same pull upon the ropes 19 so as to swing the rope 6, and thus the seat.

By providing the tortuous passage 12 in the sleeve 11, said sleeve can be adjusted on the rope 6 and held in adjusted positions by the weight of the seat, and since the rope 6 can slide in the openings 5 and 13 it is obvious that the seat can be adjusted vertically, as desired.

IVhat is claimed A swing comprising a seat, ropes provided with suspending means at their upper ends and having their lower ends passed slidably down the back of the seat, across the bottom thereof, and then upwardly in front, sleeves slidably engaged adjustably with the ropes and connected with the lower ends thereof, thimbles carried by the ropes, a bar slidably engaged with the ropes adjacent the seat, pulleys adapted for engagement with a support, and other ropes trained about the put leys with their upper ends attached to the thimbles and their lower ends connected to said bar.
