SHOWER-BATH.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,421, dated October 14, 1851.

Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. BROWN,

of Worcester, in the county of IVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspension Shower-Baths; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a front, back or side elevation. Fig. 2, is a vertical section through 0, o, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a sectional plan through l, 2, Figs. 1 and 2.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in each of the several figures.

To enable others skilled in the art to make `and use my invention I will proceed fully i a., which may be turned by hand. The valve may be made of sheet rubber between disks of metal; under the valve, B, are holes in the reservoir for the water to pass when the valve is raised (the reservoir is open at the top).

I), is a socket or box fastened to the bottom of the reservoir A, through which socket the screw a, works.

C, is the strainer made of metal and perforated with small holes in its bottoni.

c is a nut for screwing on the socket or box Z), for supporting the strainer.

D, is a conical frame to support the reservoir' when not suspended and protect the strainer and valve screw fro-1n injury.

(Z, (Z, (Z, cZ, CZ, CZ, are arms of a wire frame one end of each arm lapping round the hoop e, e, of sexagon form, and forming other ends attached to the round hoop f, supported by hooks g, g, from the reservoir.

E, is the curtain made in one sheet of oil cloth or other material and is hung to the hooked arms CZ, (Z, (Z, cZ, (Z, CZ, by eyes or rings ZL, Z1., ZL, Zz, the perpendicular edges of which curtain lap one over the other and are fastened with buttons z', i, z', z'.

F, is the foot pan or tub.

k, Zu, 7c, are arms meeting together at the center, two of them being made of one piece of wire forming an eye at the cent-er and the third being hooked at the junction of the other two-they are fixed to the reservoir and used for suspending the bath.

G, is a chain, the one end being fastened to the arms Zn, Ic, 7c, and the other end (or the connection may be made at any part of the chain) to the hook H, forming a part of the looped strap I, which contains a pulley K.

L, is a double hook fastened in a ceiling or other ,convenient part on which the looped strap I, is hung at Z, when the bath is suspended.

M, is a fixed pulley hanging on the hook N, is a cord for raising or lowering the bath. It is fastened by a loop to a hook L, at m, and passes under the movable pulley K, and over the fixed pulley M.

Q is the direction in which the cord N, is drawn when relieving the bath from suspension.

The operation is as follows. The bath is suspended by the chain G, at any one of its links to the hook H, which serves to regulate the height of the bucket or reservoir A, according to the fall desired, the hook H, and looped strap I, being supported by the hook L, at Z. Zhen required to unhitch and lower the bath, the cord N, is drawn in the direction of Q, which raises the pulley K, toward the ceiling and in a side'direction, relieving the looped strap I, from the hook L, at Z, and by slackening the cord N, at Q, the bath descends. It is raised again by pulling the cord N, fast at its upper end to the hook L, and passing over the fixed pulley M, the movable pulley K, being raised until it hitches on the hook at Z. The

shower is produced by turning the screw a,

that lifts the valve B, when the water in the reservoir passes through the holes in its bottom under the valve and through the perforated part or strainer C. The strainer C, can be removed at pleasure by unfastening the nut c, which screws on the socket and the concealingcurtain E, buttoned by i, z', z', z', may when the bath is not required, be unhooked from (Z, cZ, (Z, (Z, (Z, CZ, by unfastening the eyes ZL, ZL, ZL, ZL, and the curtain being of a pliable material may be rolled up and put on one side; also the foot pan or tub F, being loose can be removed, thus offering no obstruction or inconvenience in the room when the bath is not in use as the only remaining parts will be the reservoir and its appurtenances which are o-ut of the sire to secure by Letters Patent isd The manner of bitching and unhitohng the bath for the purpose of suspending it When raised and lowering it when desired,-

by means of the hooks L, P, in combination with the looped strap I, carrying a pulley l0 K, arranged and Operating in connection with another pulley M, substantially as shown and described.
