Be known that I, Fnnmmro Hunaig, Jr, a citizen of the'UnitectStates, residing at'Salina, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in High Cha rs, of which the following is a specification.

M invention relatesto animprove nent in high chairs in the nature of an adjustable seat, and the object thereof is to so construct the seat that the chair may be adapted for the use of children varying in age from about six months to two or more years.

Generally, the mother hegins'to place her infant in an ordinaryhigh chair when reaches the age of sir; months; ant a girdle is placed around it to hold it securely to the back of the chair, and the seat being of COIlSlflGl'iLblG depth, and the infant being hor n b t low e trem ies o th child, from the waist downward, rest in a horizontal position for it is impossible for the child to bend its knees so as to drop the lower legs over the edge of the seat. Such forced position is uncomfortable and unwise for it causes an unnatural strain upon the muscles and has a tendency to interfere with the natural and proper development of the spinal column. The same kind of chair continues to be used until the child attains the age of two or more years, and during all that time the child is denied freedom of movement of its limbs while occupying the chair which Ctl-llIlOhfil-ll to retard the de velopment thereof during such time.

To overcome this serious objection to the present construction of the ordinary high chair I have devised what 1 term, an adjustable seat therefor.

A child six months old should be provided a chair the seat whereof is of less depth than that required for a. child of two or more years, and the chair devised by me is so constructed that it provides as comfortable a seat for a child of six months as it does for a child of two years, for it permits the child to sit in an upright position with its knees bending over the edge of the seat.

I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chair showing my invention, one section of the seat being lowered to position for use by a child six monthsold.

Section 1 is rigidly secured to the chair frame and sectibn 2 nioy'ably allixedto section 1 at or near the meeting edges of the two sections by hinges will be noted that these hinges are afliked to the underside of both sections and are set back from the edge of section 1 so that when section is dropped to a vertical position for use, the face of said section will be flush with the inner edge of section 1.

The foot-rest for the ordinary high chair is generally secured to the front legs as at .L and projects forward therefrom. As said foot-rest is not adapted for use with my improvement when in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I have provided a foot-rest 5 which is secured between the two front legs of the chair and extends backward. i t the rear edge of foot-rest 5 is secured stop 6 against which the front section, 2, bears when lowered to a vertical position.

The two sections of the seat are provided on the underside with spring catches 7, the movable section carrying the male portion and section 1 carrying the female portion, in such relation as to co-act when section 2 is raised to a horizontal position to be locked to section 1.

In the accompanying illustrations I have not shown the table or tray that usually forms part of a childs chair, for it has no relation to my invention.

It is believedithat the operation and use of the instant invention will be clear from the foregoing description of parts and relations, and further detailed explanation thereof is accordingly omitted.

My invention as shown and described herein is my preferred form for carrying out my invention, but as this construction is susceptible of modification and variation without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, it is intended that all matters contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpretcd as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, a seat composed of two sections, one rigidly secured to the chair frame and the other movable in a vertical direction.

2. In a device of the character described,

4. In a device of thecharacter described, a seat having a cut-out portion hinged there to and adaptedto drop perpendicularly to shorten the seat, and means for releasably securing said cut-out portion to the fixed portion of the seat in a horizontal plane.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a chair frame, a seat composed of two sections one rigidly secured to the frame, the other adapted to be moved in a vertical direction, and two footrests attached to said frame and projecting in opposite directions in horizontal planes.

6. In a device of thecharacter described, a seat composed of two sections, one rigidly secured to the chair frame and the other movable in a vertical direction and having a free front edge.

7. In a device of the character described, a seat composed of two sections, one rigidly secured to the chair frame, the other movable in a vertical direction and having a free front edge, and means for locking the two sections in same horizontal plane.
