CHARLES W. BOL'IE, 0F ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY.
MOUTH-PROTECTOR FOR DRINKING-GLASSES .AND THE LIKE.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application led December 1, 1918. Serial No. 134,351.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W: Boum, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and- State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouth- Protectors vfor Drinking-Glasses andthe like; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and eiicient device for preventing the users lips from contacting with drinking glasses, cups and the like, thus reducing the liability of contracting diseases.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 `is a perspective view of the device applied to a drinking glass,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 3 is a face view of the protector.
In the drawing above briefiy described, the numeral l designates a substantially rectangular card formed of any suitable material such as glazed paper, paraiin or wax coated paper, Celluloid, rubber, and all metals or compositions of metals. The upper corners of the card 1 are preferably rounded as shown at 2 and said card is formed with a U-shaped slit 3 extending parallel with its lower and vertical edges, the ends of the slit terminating in the rounded corners 2 and being enlarged into circular form as shown at 4 to receive the upper edge of a lass or the like when the invention is app ied.
The portion of the card between its edges and the slit 3 constitutes a yielding U-shaped clamping frame 5 for disposition on the interior of the drinking glass or the like while the remainder of said card forms an adequate mouth protector 6 to be disposed on the exterior of the drinking utensil as will be clear from Figs. l and 2 of the drawing.
By constructing the device in the manner shown and described, it may be easily and inexpensively manufactured and marketed and a number of the articles can be compactly stacked for shipment, the enlarged ends 4 of the slit 3 then serving to receive a small Wire, cord or the like whereby the several devices are secured together. By
this method of tying the articles together,
there is no danger of the cord or wire becoming loosened by lateral shifting as is the case when passed around the exterior of the bundle.
I claim A mouth protector for attachment to drinking glasses and the like comprising a flat one-piece card having a U-shaped slit substantially parallel to its vertical and lower edges and having the upper ends of said slit enlarged to receive the edge of the glass, the portion of the card between the edges thereof and the slit forming a yielding clamping frame for disposition on the interior of the glass while the remainder of the card constitutes an adequate mouth protector for disposition on the exterior of the g ass.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES W. BOL'IE.
