w1 E. EDWARDS. RELEASING PENHOLDE'R.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE II. I9I5.

RELEASING-PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ang. 7, 1917.
Application filed .Tune 11, 1915. Serial No. 33,555.
To @ZZ @IJ/iam t may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VALTER E. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buena Park, in the county of Grange and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Releasing- Penliolders, of which the following is .a specificati-on.
My invention relates to pen holders, and more particularly to an improved pen holder for receiving and clamping a pen, which is simple in construction, cheap to inanufacture, strong and durable, and quickly and easily operated.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a pen holder of the class above described having a clamping jaw pivotally mounted thereon for engagement with a pen, suitable actuating means being provided for moving the clamping jaw into clamped position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a clamping jaw having reinforcing means associated therewith adjacent the point at which the actuating means engages the same.
A further object of my invention is to provide a pen holder having the improved clamping jaw formed of a. single sheet of bendable metal, and an improved releasing means associated therewith.
Vith the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specilication and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of .a pen holding shank and handle embodying the improvements of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a pen clamped therein.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank of bendable metal from which the clamping is formed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, I provide a pen holding sleeve 1, which is preferably tubular and internally threaded as at 2 adjacent one extremity. A handle 3 is provided having a threaded shank 4, the free extremity of the threaded shank 4 being frusto-conical jaw preferably comprises a sheet 6 of bendable metal having one extremity thereof enlarged as indicated at 7 to provide a gripping jaw. rIhe gripping portion or jaw 7 is preferably bent into arcuate shape transversely so as to conform to the configuration of the tubular sleeve 1. The sheet G is provided, adjacent its opposite extremity, with a plurality of laterally extending ears S, said ears 8 having openings 9 therein for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The extremity of the sheet 6 adjacent the ears S is bent on the dotted line10 indicated in F ig. l to provide an abutment 11 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The ears 8 are bent into the position shown in Fig. 3 to provide reinforcing and bearing portions. As shown in Fig. 3, the bearing ears 8 are bent, as at 12, inwardly past the outer marginal edges of the abutments 11 so as to provide strengthening or reinforcing walls performing their function in amanner which will hereinafter appear. The openings 9 are adapted to register and a transverse bolt, rivet, or the like 13 is receivable therethrough, the opposite extremities of the rivet 13 being carried by the shank 1, `as shown at the points 14 in Fig. 3. The sheet 6 is offset as at 15 substantially intermediate its length and adjacent the inner end of the clamping jaw 7 to provide space between the inner wall of the tubular shank 1 and said sheet to accommodate a fiat spring element 16 riveted or otherwise secured, as at 17 to the sheet 6, and bent into yielding engagement as at 18 with the inner wall of the sleeve l. Attention is called to the fact that the spring 16 need not be riveted to the sheet 6, but may be formed integral therewith by striking a portion of the sheet outwardly to provide a spring, this being within the scope of my invention and possible of use when producing the same for practical use.
A pen is shown clamped in the holder in Fig. 2 and is designated 19, the pen being shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. When placing a pen in the holder, the handle 3 is slightly unscrewed from the shank 1. By this movement the clamping jaw 7 will be moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 by the action of the spring 16 and a pen may be inserted. By returning the handle 3 tothe original position, the contacting portion 5 Will engage the abutment l1, causing the jaw to be moved into clamped engagement with the pen. It Will be noted that a comparatively small contact surface is presented by the conical end of the handle 3 against the abutment ll and that the -point or contact is offset from the pivot 13. When pressure is exerted on the abutment 11, the reinforcingears or Walls S will very eectively perform the function of preventing bending oi' the abutment when the pen is clamped. Particular attention is called to the fact that when the invention is reduced to practical use, there are only three component parts. These parts are the clamping member, holding shank, and the handle, the clamping member having the pivot ears, spring, and clamping jaw formed integral.
While I have shown and described my invention as possessing a peculiar form and construction it is desired that it be understood that I may make such changes in the details thereof that do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim `and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A releasing pen holder, including a tubular holding sleeve having an internally threaded extremity, a handle having a threaded end receivable in the threaded eX- tremity, a pen gripping member fulcrumed in the sleeve, said pen gripping member having a resilient gripping jaw and pen guards formed therewith, a reinforced abutment on the gripping member, and a spring for urging the resilient jaW from engagement With the sleeve and the abutment into engagement with the threaded end oi the handle.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature EDWARDS.'
