have invented a new and useful Coolingthereto.

My invention has relation to mechanism for cooling rolling mill rolls; and is designed to provide simple and effective mechanism of this character which will be eco T nomical in its use of water, the cooling wa- Y ter being directed only upon the particular pass of the rolls being used at any particu lar time. My invention also provides mech anism of this character in which the cooling jets may be shifted from one roll pass to another simultaneously with themovement of the movable table guides. It also pro-' vides a cooling mechanism in which the supply of water will be automatically shut off except at such times as the rolls are in operation. p I p The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof, and which will 'now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement and combination of theparts within thespirit and scope ofmy invention as defined in the appended claims.

The parts as thus far described may be of any usual or well known character, and in themselves form no part of my present invention.
In accordance with my invention I mount one or more water discharge pipes 10 upon each of the movable table guides 6 and 7, each of these pipes having a connecting pipe 11 leading into a telescope casing or cylinder 12 which may be conveniently mounted on the supports for the actuating cylinders.

two of the pipes 10, one of them being mounted above the table rolls, and the other below said rolls, each of these pipes terminating in a bent nozzle portion which is adapted to direct its discharge against one of the passes of the rolls. As the guides are shifted from one pass to another the pipes 10 will be correspondingly shifted, the connections 1 1 telescoping inthe casings or cylinders 12. In this manner the cooling water will always be properly directed upon the particular roll pass which is being used.
In order to reduce the amount of water required and to prevent waste thereof, it is desirable that some means be provided for .automatically cutting. off the supply of water to the pipes 10 whenthe mill rolls. are not turning. For this purpose I have shown each of the supply connections 13 as having therein a controlling valve 15 (see Fig. 3). The stem 16 of each of these valves is provided with a centrifugal ball-governor 17. The sleeve 18 of this governor is shown as being driven bybevelgears' 19 from a shaft 20ha'ving a pulley 21 connected by a belt 22 with the driving spindle '9.
It will be seen that the valve l5-is held closed by the governor when the latter is idle; but when the spindle 19 is runningat its driving speed, the outward movement Q15 6 and 7 designate the movable; table guides, which are shown as being actuated by hydraulic cylinders 8 to whichthe governor balls will force the valve stem 16 downwardly sufficiently to open the valve 15. The supply of water therefore will commence as soon as the rolls reach their normal driving speed and will be automatically shut oi as soon as the rolls are stopped.
It is also desirable that only those pipes at the entering side of the rolls shall be in operation at any given time. I therefore provide means by which the water will automatically be supplied to the pipes 10 at the entering side of the rolls, and will be automatically shut off from the corresponding rection of rotation of the rolls is reversed. This may be conveniently effected by providing single-acting clutches 23 (see Fig. 4) in the connections between the pulley 21 and the bevel gears 19. These two clutches are set to operate in reverse directions, and in such proper direction that the water will be'automatically cut off from the pipes at one side of the rolls and supplied to those at the other side at each reversal of the mill.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those familiar with this art, since it provides a very simple and efiective means for furnishing the particular mill pass being used with an adequate supply of cooling water, concentrated at that particu lar pass, and at the entering side thereof. The provisions for automatically controlling the supply when the mill is started and stopped, and for automatically reversing the supply from one side to the other as the mill is reversed enables the cooling to be effected with a minimum amount of water and with but little waste. V
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the governors 1'? instead of acting directly upon the water controlling valves operoperate with fixed contact members 24 to open and close an electric circuit 25. This circuit includes therein the coil or winding the movable core of this magnet being extended to form the stem of the valve 15 When the governor 17 is idle the contacts 24 and 24s are separated, thus deenergizing the magnet 26 and holding the valve 15 closed. As the rolls speed up the governor closes the circuit at the contacts 24 and 24 energizing magnet 26 and thereby opening valve 15 7 I desire it to be understood that'the means for automatically; controlling the valves which are herein shown and described are illustrative only, and that this control may be effected in various other ways within the scope of the appended claims. It will also be obvious that other changes may be made, such as in the'number and particular arrangement of the water discharge pipes, their supply connections, and in the means pipes at the opposite side each time the diate 'movable contact members 24, which co-- 26 ofan electromagnet of the solenoid type,
