Be it known that I, HAROLD EDGAR YaR- i row, a subject of the King of Great Britain,
residing in Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Submarine Vessels, oi which the i 'followinoisas ecilication. l
The invention relates to improvements for closing the top oi the funnel of a submarine vessel when 1t is intended to submerge the vessel. l
According tothe invention, a hinged valve is provided which can be operated from -within the submarine to close the funnel aperture whenthe vessel is submerged, Vand the means operating the valve are ,so arranged tha-t at the iir'st motion the oil fuel is shut oil from the burners, the air doors are then closed to lprevent the products of combustion from escaping into the stokehold, and finally the funnel aperture is closed to prevent access of water. Figs 2a andQb show-this valve cooled by circulating water.;
Figs. 3, 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d show means by which the funnel valve is closed antomatically when the vessel dives.
Referring to Fig. 1, A is a boiler of the water tube type, B the steam drum, C the uptake, D the funnel, and E a valvehinged at F for closing the top of the :tunnelfwhen the vessel is submerged. G is a worm wheel rotated lby a worm H adapted to open or close the valve about its hinge F, The seating I of the valve is secured to the top of the funnel and packing J (Fig. 2) of leather, or other suitable material, serves to make the valve water-tight when the vessel is submerged. In the example shown, the wormH is rotated by spindles andbevel gearingK. VAssuming the valve E is in the open position, the rotation of a hand Wheel L closes the oil fuel supply to the burners at a valve M by means of gearin N. When this valve is completely close a spring clutch T slips. While the hand Wheel L is closing the valve M a worm wheel R, engaging with a worm S on the spindle opern ated by the hand Wheel moves from a position 1 to a position 2,'but during this mo'- vrod G between tion a connecting rod Q, pivoted to a radius I l of the wheel R and hinged to levers P oper,- ating air doors O of the furnaces, is only moved vertically by the small amount represented by the versed sine of the are between vpositions 1 and 2. A further movement of the hand wheel L brings the wheel R into the position 3, in which the air doors O are closed. Thile the worm wheelR is moved from position 1 to position 3, the funnel valve E is moved fromv position 5 to position 6. A further rotation of the hand wheel will move the wheel It fromposition 3 to position 4 and will close valve E. The

The pins g, g, are held in position by a spring k (Fig. 3a) ofwhich the tension may be adjusted as required. The spindle c has also moved to the right, so that the pins g, g, again engage with the projections m, m1. The -pins y, g, need not be clear of the projections n when the valve isclosed, but they must Ibe clear of the projections m in the open. position, if the valve is to act autoinatically.
'Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I knovx7 of carrying the same int-o practical effect, I claim 1. In a submarine vessel, a boiler, furnaces in. the; boiler With burners supplied With oil fuel, air doors to the furnaces, a funnel. a hinged Valve for closing the funnel, and means by the operation of which the oil fuel supply tothe furnaces, the said air doors and hinged valveare closed in predetermined sequence;

In asubmarine vessel, a boiler, furnaces in the boiler Withrburners supplied With oil fuelair doors to the furnaces, a funnel, a hinged4 valve. for closing the funnel, and a spindle by the operation of Which the oil fuel :supply 'to the burners is cut olf, the said ldoors are then closed and then the hinged valve -to the funnel is closed.

Inra submarine vessel, a boiler, furnaces in the boiler with burners supplied with oil fuel, air doors to the furnaces, a funnel, a hinged valve for closing. thefunnel, a spindle and a hand Wheel operating said spindle, a valve for controlling the oil fuel supply, gearing. on said spindle for operating the valve, a spring clutch on the spindle, anotherspindle connectedto said spring clutch, gearing on last mentionad spindle through which the air doors are operated, and also gearing through which the funnel valve is operated.

5. In a submarine vessel, a boiler,V furnaces in the boiler with burners supplied With oil fuel, air doors to the furnaces, a funnel, a hinged valve for closing the funnel, and means by theoperation of Whichlthe oil fuel supply to the furnaces, `the said air doors and hinged valve are closedin predetermined sequence, the funnel valve-being.V provided with hinges which are partly independent of the opening and closing means, so as to allow the automatic closing of thevalve by the plunging of the vessel.

In asubinarine vessel, a boiler, furnaces in the boiler with burners supplied Wit-h oil fuel, air doors tothe furnaces, a` funnel, a hinged valve for closing the funnel,VV and means-by the operation of Which-thefoilfuel supply to the furnaces, thev said air doors and hinged valvez are closed inV predetermined sequence, the :said: means including :a wor-m. and Worm Wheeha threaded spindle on said Wheel adapted to'y movelongitudi nally when rotated by saidwh'eel, bearings for said spindle, internaly threads on said bearings engaging with -the threads on said spindle, projections on the hinge ofA the funnel valve, a projection on the, spindle, ,and spring pins passing through said last .named projection and adapted to engage with said projections on the hinge of Vthe funnel valve.
