EVAN LEWIS, on swelvsna, warns.
REVERSIN 'G-VALVE OF (EAS -FIRED SMELTING-FURNAGES AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVAN LEWIS, a subject of His Majesty the King of England, residing at Swansea, in the county of Glamorgan, South Wales, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to the Reversing-Valves of Gas-Fired Smelting-Furnaces and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reversing valves of gas fired smelting furnaces and the like having yielding valve seats of refractory material.
I will now describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings 111 which V Figure 1 is a diagrammatical sectional elevation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation, parts being broken out to show the opening in the wall for the sliding tray. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of a furnace top fitted with my improved valves. M
As shown the main reversing flap valve a is rotatably mounted below the gas inlet and gas boX in a casing or bonnet b of usual construction, which is disposed above the furnace c and provided with side chambers d to allow the gas to enter the furnace c at one end 6 and to be drawn off to connect with the flue f in communication with the stack shaft at the other end or vice-versa. This reversing valve (1 is disposed in the middle of the divided casing g and is mounted on a shaft it at its lower end in the said casing in such a manner that when operated by a lever 71 fitted externally of the casing and preferably connected through links to a hand lever provided on a gantry or platform 7' disposed above the furnace, the valve a is adapted to close either of the chambers (Z and to put the other into communication with the gas supply. This reversing valve a constructed according to my invention, is provided with curved over lips or longitudinal projections a on opposite sides respectively of its outer end, and one lip is adapted to lie, when the valve a is in its closed position in a tray a and the other in a tray a containing sand or the like. This tray a or a is slidably mounted on a shelf 7 above one of the openings d communicating with one of the side chambers oZ so that either tray a or a can be withdrawn from the casing 7) through slots 11 in the front wall 10 thereof and the sand contained in said Patented July 13, 1915.
trays can be changed or replenished when required. Each tray of is provided at one end with a plate 5 having a handle 6 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The sidewall a of either tray a,a against which the Valve is adapted to lie is preferably sloped or shaped so as to provide a gas tight joint. It will thus be seen that should the outer end of the valve a curve, or warp, as it usually does owing to the excessive heat, a gas tight joint can still be obtained by reason of its end a dipping into a bank of sand or other refractory material.
Each side chamber (Z is provided with an inlet or an outlet is to or from the furnace and an outlet f to the stack shaft but when the previously described reversing valve a is in a position to allow the gas to communicate through one of the chambers cl to one side 6 of the furnace 0, the outlet f from this chamber to the stack must be closed and the outlet f to the stack in the other side chamber cl opened. The valves Z for opening or closing these outlets f are usually of pot lid shape and are hung on the opposite ends of a lever which is connected to the reversing valve. According to my invention I make these valves Z of tapered form so as to enter and close the opening 7 to the flue. These valves Z are weighted and hung on rods m which pass through holes 11. in the casing d and are connected to each other by a chain 0 or the like which is adapted to pass over pulleys or wheels p mounted above the casing so that when one valve Z is open the other is closed. This chain 0 is connected by a suitable link 9 to an endless chain 1" passing over pulleys s hung from the before mentioned platform 7' and is operated by a handwheel, not shown, on the platform through any suitable gear such as another endless chain passing over pulleys one of which is connected to one of the first mentioned pulleys 8.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is The combination with a gas fired furnace of a valve casing having openings in its top and side walls and shelves above said side wall openings and slots in its front wall, said casingbeing provided at opposite points on its side walls with valve seats composed of sliding trays containing sand and adapted to be withdrawn through said slots, an
oscillatory valve pivoted between said side specification in the presence of two subserib- Walls and. orgideddwithdfianges at its oping Witnesses. posite outer e ges a apte to engage in inclined position either of said valve seats, and EVAN LEWIS 5 flues connecting said casing with said top Witnesses:
and said openings. C. LUDLOW LIVINGSTON,
In testimony whereof I have signed this P. A. LIVINGSTON.
Copies 0! this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
