ATTORNEY PERCY G. GIBSON, 0F WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
COVER FOR TRAPS, 850.
Original application filed March 13, 1916, Serial No. 83,959.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1917.
Divided and this application filed August 5,
1916. Serial No. 113,392.
Y '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Penny (l. (lesson, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cover for Traps, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to trap covers, particularly of the screw type, and is a division of the subject-matter set forth in application Serial No. 83,959, filed March 13, 1916, for a screw cover for traps.
The obj eet of this invention is to provide a trap cover of such construction that it may be readily and economically manufactured, and may be easily applied and removed when in use.
To accomplish the above object the present invention provides a trap cover which has a cover plate made separately and independently of the threaded flange or plug portion, so that these separate parts may be made of different materials, and so that in casting, less scrap will be produced, as in manufacturing the present forms of trap covers the metal is frequently mis-run, is burnt by becoming too hot, and is frequently chilled before it covers the surface of the mold.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification with the further under-. standing that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined'to strict conformity with the showing of the drawing, and the invention is not limited to the use made of the cover, but the construction may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications come within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical central. section taken through a trap cover constructedaccording to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a. bottom plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the cover plate, the interposed packing gasket, and the screw plug, showing these parts separated in their respective superposed positions.
Referring to this drawing, wherein like parts are designated by similar numerals of reference throughout the several views, 10 designates a cover plate preferably of circular form. This cover plate is preferably made of a steel disk having flat upper and lower faces. For the purpose of protecting this cover plate 10, and also for ornamenting the same, it may be copper or nickel plated; but it may, of course, be made of aluminum, sheet brass, or any alloy, or ma terial found suitable for the purpose. The central portion of this cover plate or disk 10 has a non-circular opening 11 therein, which is shown as of rectangular form.
Arranged immediately beneath the cover plate 10 is a gasket 12 of disk form, and. of a diameter less than that of the cover plate 10. This gasket 12 is preferably of fiber, although any other suitable material may be used. The central portion of the gasket 12 has a non-circular opening 13 therein, which conforms in size and shape to the opening 11 in the cover plate 10, and is adapted to register therebeneath. The gasket 12 is adapted to seat on top of a trap and be held flat thereagainst by the projecting edge or flange of the cover plate.
In lieu of the usual integral depending flange commonly formed on cover plates, the present invention provides a separate and independent screw plug 14-, which, as shown in the drawing, comprises an annular or ring member externally and peripherally threaded at its lower portion, as at 15, and having its upper portion integral and flush with the spider arms 16 radiating from a central web or socket portion 17. The web or socket portion 17 as shown in Fig. 3, is substantially rectangular in form, and provides a central opening 18 of the size and contour of the openings 11 and 13 in the cover plate and the gasket, and arms of substantially uniform width at the different sides and about the opening 18.
For firmly uniting these members and turning the same as a unit when screwing the plug into a trap opening, and when removing the plug therefrom, a stud bolt is provided. This bolt has an angularly faced head 19 upon its upper end which is adapted to seat upon the upper face of the cover plate 10, project thereabove, and receive the jaws of a wrench, to manipulate the screw cover. The stud bolt has an an ular shank 20 immediately adjacent andbeneath the head 19, said shank being of a size and form to fit snugly into the openings 1 1 13 and 18 provided respectively in the cover plate 10, the gasket 12, and the screw plug 1 1.
The lower extremity of the shank of the stud bolt is reduced in diameter and is threaded, as at 21, the threaded extremity projecting downwardly below the Spider 16 of the screw plug. A binding or clamping nut 22 is threaded upon the lower extremity 21 of the stud bolt. This nut has a concaved inner face 23 formed by the dishing out of the upper or inner side of the nut 22 to provide the nut with a peripheral flange. The nut 22 is of a diameter sufficient to extend its flange beyond the angular shank 20, the latter projecting within the concavity of the nut 22 when the nut is tightened and the spider 16 is forced up- 20' wardly over the shank 20. Provision is thus made for takingup any wear or compression of the gasket 12 without sacrificing the strength of the stud bolt, and'without providing separate means for locking the screw plug 14 from rotation with the stud bolt.
\Vhen the head 19 is turned to screw the cover into or out of a trap opening, the angular shank 20, which engages in the angular openings of the three members, carries with it these three members. Thus, the three members are held from relative movement when the screw plug is turned either into or out of the trap opening.
It will also be noted, particularly from Fig. 1, that the spider 16 and the web 17 of the screw plug are integral with the upper end of the plug, and thereby impart a cup like shape to the screw plug. This form is provided for the purpose of reducing the weight and amount of material of the screw plug. A relatively flat trap cover is thereby provided which may be conveniently handled, packed and shipped.
As the packing gasket 12 is of disk form and clamped between the screw plug 14.- and the cover plate 10, the gasket is always held in place, does not have to be distorted and stretched over the screw plug as is done in th present type of trap covers, and is always in proper position for seating on the trap.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A cover comprising a plate, a gasket of less diameter arranged against the'underside of the same, a screw plug of less diameter than the gasket and positioned against the latter, and a separate-bolt connecting the plate and the screw plug to bind the parts together and permit the members of the cover to be turned as a unit, said bolt having its outer end formed with a polygonal head which bears upon the plate.
2. In a device of the character described, an annular plug provided with a bolt opening, a gasket of disk form mounted upon and against said plug closing the end thereupon said plate, extending through said openings and provided with means at its opposite end' for clamping said plate and V gasket to th plug.
3. A cover comprising a plate provided with an angular opening through the cen-.
tral portion thereof, an externally threaded plug having a flat upper face and an'angu lar opening formed therethrough, a gasket .of disk form interposed'between the plate and the screw plug and having an angular opening therethrough, said gasket being-of greater diameter than said plug and. lying flat against the lower face of said. plate, a bolt passed downwardly through said openings in the respective members, having an,
angular head upon its upper end adapted to bind against the upper face of the plate, and having an angular shank adapted to fit snugly in said angular openings to hold the plate,'the gasket,v and the screw plug from turning about the bolt, and means provided upon the lower end of the bolt and engaging against the lower side of said plug to force the same upwardly against the gasket and bind plate.
4. A cover comprising a flat plate having an angular opening at its middle portion, a packing disk fitting against the under side of the plate to provide a gasket therefor and having an angular opening through the central portion thereof, a flat ring-having exthe latter against the ternal peripheral screw threads and inwardly extending spider arms, a" S0ket frame joining the inne'rends of the spider arms at the central portion of the ring and having an angular opening there'through, a stud bolt having an angular shank for engagement downwardly through said openings in the plate, the gasket and the socket frame to hold all of said members from turning about the bolt, and .a binding nut threaded upon the lower end of 'the bolt and adapted to bind upwardly against the socket frame to thus hold the members together, said bolt also having a Wrench receiving head upon its upper end seating upon the upper face of said plate whereby through, an externally threaded plug-hav- Z ing a flat upper face and an angular'centr-al opening therethrough,.a gasket of disk plug, the nut having a'concavity in its inner face of sufficient diameter to receive the adj acent end of said angular shank upon the compression of said members.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
