Be it known that I, CHARLES MEYER, of
' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new andu'seful Improvement in dans and Jars; and I' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- .twat-hereof, which will enable those skilled in L -the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in whichdrawin g ment. cover. l Fig. 3 is a planview of the top of the can or jar made according to my invention,

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This inventionv relates .to cans and jars of metal,- glass, or other material; and consists in an improved method of fastening the covers thereto. The top of the can or jar is lprovided with an internal locking-ange, which is recessed at one ormore points to receive the locking-arms of the cover, and permit them to be brought under the divisions of the lockingof the can or jar is provided with a, seat near,

The inclined positions of the projecting parts E of the locking-flange, and they ridges G thereon, can be produced by the ac-` tion ofthe dies when the Iiange is being cut, but, if desired, the ridges can be produced by solder or other methods. The cover H consists, in this example, of a dat metallic plate, provided with four lugs, I, projecting, at equal distances apart, from its edge, so as to form thumb-pieces for turning the cover upon the can by hand. The lugs I may be less in number, or, instead of them,Iv lugs or depressions may befformed on the top of the cover to rcceive a wrench for turning the cover. From the under side of .the cover project lockingarms J, which are bent to correspond to the inclined positions on the lockin g-iiange of the can. In this example, thesearms are formed on the edge ot' aplate, K, which is riveted to the under side of the cover. The under side of the cover, Anear its edge, is provided with a groove, L, arranged so as to receive the ridgeseat D'of the can, and help make a tight joint.
The ridge D and the groove in the cover serve also as a guide to the cover in adjusting it on the can.
My invention is applicable to glass jars, as well as to metallic cans, and the vessels to which my invention is applied can be used for holding paints, as Well. as fruit and other articl'cs, which it maybe desired to keep air-tight.

A can or jar provided with surrounding ridge-seat D and a horizontal ange, B, having projections E, extending inwardly over` a portion of the mouth of the can or jar, in combination with a cover, the locking-arms J of which pass under the projections E, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
