D. B. NELSON.
HAT HOLDER.
APPLICATION .ILED Aue.2e,1915.
1 %31 350 Patented July 3, 1917.
WITNESSES. \NVENTQR DORA B. NELSON, 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
HAT-HOLDEB,.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'J'Patented July 3, 1191 7.
Application filed August 26, 1915. Serial No. 47,533.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DORA B. NELSON, a citizen of the United- States, residing at Bufi'alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have, invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hat-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to. hat-trimmers holders, and more especially to devices for holding hats or hat bodies internally while being trimmed, and also holding the hat externally while it is being lined.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved trimmers holder which will hold a hat of any size or shape both for trimming and lining operations, which is readily adjustable to all necessary angles and positions.
The special objects of my invention are, first, to provide a holder which has, in combination with supporting and, adjusting means, an adjustable form, or cage, or support, constructed of sections of wire, slipjoint connected, so that the same may be adjusted to any irregular form or size of hat, either to form or shape it or to conform to an established shape or form; and, second, to provide a support of similar character and construction which may be adjusted to fit over and support a hat after it has been trimmed, so that the hat may be held While being lined without any disturbance or mussing of the trimming or disturbance of the established shape. Referring to the draw- 1ngs,-
Figure 1 is a perspective.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of theoutside holder.
Fig. holder.
Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line w-m of Fig. 1 in the plane of the arms 7 and 8 when the same are swung to vertical position.
A substantial base 1 has a tubular post 2 rigidly secured to it, and in this post a rod or tube 3 is movable vertically and secured in any desired position by means of a wing- 3 is a sectional view of the inside wires 28,28, and also en 8' of the arms 7 and 8. The bolt 9 has a nut 10 and an interposed spiral spring 11, a washer being inserted between the nut and spring.
It will now be seen that the arms 7 and 8 may be swung up and down by the application of suficient force to overcome the grip of the said notches or serrations produced by the spring 11.
The outer ends of the arms 7 and 8 have lug- ends 12 and 17 which engage with simi lar lug- ends 13 and 19 on the arms 14 and 18; and by the use of notched or serrated surfaces, bolts, and springs similar to those above described, the arms 14 and 18 are adjustable with reference to the arms 7 and 8.
The arm 18 has a lug 21 rigidly secured to it, and into this lug 21 the stud 20 of the internal holder, hereafter described, fits rotatably and may be secured against rotation by a wing-screw. The arm 14 has a similar lug and wing-screw 16, into which lug the stud 15 of the outside holder fits rotatably.
The inside holder-the holder upon which the hat body is held while the exterior trimming is being doneconsists of the curved wires 22 and 22 which are capable of being extended or shortened by means of the interposed slip-joints 23, which said wires at their inner ends are rigidly secured to the stud 20 and at their outer ends are rigidly secured to the circular wires 24, 24, Which also are provided with slip-joints so that the diameter or curvature of these circular wires may be made to fit the interior, or to establish the shape, of any hat body, the slipjoints being shown at 25, 25.
The outside holder-the holder which engages the hat externally while it is being linedconsists of the wires 26 rigidly secured to the stud 15, the wires 26 which are rigidly secured to the circular wires 28, 28, and the wires 26 and 26 are adjustable as to length'by the interposed slip-joints 27. The circular wires 28, 28, form a support for the brim of the hat, and ,to support the crown radial wires 30, 30, engage over the gage the wires 31, 31, Y which by means of slipoints 32, 32, are adjustable to the size and form of any hat crown.
It will thus be seen that a hat body of any size or shape may be placed over the internal holder and either hold firmly without disturbing its shape, or may be adjusted to screw 4. A lug 5 fits over the upper end of the rod 3, is rotatable thereon, and is secured against rotation by means of a wing-screw 6. This lug is bored transversely to receive a bolt 9, and the two lateral faces are notched radially or serrated radially to contact with the similarly notched or serrated lugs 7 and determine its shape, and moved to any position to suit the convenience or need of the trimmer; and when the hat has been trimmed it may be removed from said internal holder which is adjusted to hold the same without disturbance of the trimming, and placed in the external holder and lined as desired, and while in this holder is likewise movable and adjustable by the operator. Furthermore, as above stated, two trimmers may use the device at the same time-one trimming and the other lining a. hat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a holder of the type described and in combination with supporting and adjusting means as described, a holder comprising a stud, wires rigidly secured to an adjustable stud, wires slip-joint connected to said firstmentioned wires and connected at their other ends to Wires which form a circular support, a circular support made up of a plurality of wire sections and slip-joints connecting said wire sections, the whole forming a support for the interior of a hat and adjustable to any desired form or size.
2. In a holder of the type described and in combination with adjustable supports as described, means for supporting a hat exteriorly comprising wires rigidly secured to an adjustable stud, a stud, wires secured to an outer circular support, slip-joints connecting said sets of wires, an outer circular support for engaging the rim of a hat made up of a plurality of sections of wire and slip joints connecting the same. a second circular support to engage about the crown of a hat comprising sections of wire and slip-joints connecting the same, and wires connecting said first-mentioned circular support with said second-mentioned circular support.
DORA B. NELSON.
