BASE FOR STANDS I Harold Borghesl, Union City, N. J. Application March 29, 1947, Serial No. 738,160
This invention relates to bases for stands and refers more particularly to bases for lamp stands, display stands or similar columns or elongated articles maintained in an upright position.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a base for a vertical lamp or display stand which is inexpensive to manufacture and durable and effective in use.
Another object is the provision of a base of the described type which can be effectively used to support a. substantial load which will maintain a stand or column in an upright position without danger of collapsing or tipping over.
A further object'is the provision of a base which is composed of a small number of parts so that it can be quickly and easily assembled and attached to the upright stand or column.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent in the course of the following specification.
The objects of the present invention may be realized through the provision of a base which includes a shell filled with a suitable weight such as concrete or cement. The shell may consist of an upper and lower portion adapted to interengage by means of an annular groove. The lower shell portion has suitable rib-like legs pressed radially out of the shell. The shell cooperates with a stand holder having the shape of a nut extending through the shell and carrying the threaded lower end of the stand or column. The nut has a lower flange which is bent over the edge of the shell to provide a secure connection.
The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing showing by way of example a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a bottom view of a base constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a part of the base in section on a larger scale; and
Figure 4 is a section showing part of a lower shell portion, with the filler broken away, constructed in accordance with a modified form of the invention.
The base shown in the drawing has a lower shell portion l and an uppershell portion H. The lower shell portion I 0 has a bottom I2 and an annular side wall l3 provided with an in- 3 Claims. (Cl. 248194') V wardly directed groove I4 which is located close to the upper edge I5 of the wall. The bottom l2 has a central opening 16. Furthermore, the bottom I2 is provided with radial ribs I! which are pressed out of the material of the shell and which terminate in round legs or supporting elements I8.
The upper shell portion l I has a small opening 20 in its top wall l9 located directly above the opening l6. Furthermore, the upper shell portion H is provided with a depending annular skirt or side wall 2| which is substantially of the same height as the side wall l3 of the lower shell portion In. The skirt 2| has a groove 22 which fits into the groove l4 so that when the shell portion II is placed over the shell portion l0 a. firm connection may be established between these: two members to form a single casing which may be conveniently filled by any suitable material 23 such as concrete, cement or a plastic mass.
The column or stand 240. is supported in the described base I0, I I by means of an elongated nut 24 which is so dimensioned that it extends essentially between the openings I6 and 20. The bottom of the nut 24 has a shoulder 25 resting upon the inner edge of the opening IS. The top surface 26 of the nut 24 rests upon the inner edge of the opening 20. A flange 21 extends through the opening it and is bent outwardly over the edges of the opening to provide a firm connection between the shell in, I l and the nut. The nut 24 is provided with inner screw threads 28 and the stand 24a has a threaded end 29 which is screwed into the nut 24, thus establishing a secure connection between the base and the stand.
As shown in Figure 4, side wall I3 of lower shell portion In may be .crimped as at 30, the crimping extending around side wall l3 from a point intermediate the ends to the upper end thereof. In this construction groove l4 may be dispensed with since the crimping serves to retain the filler 23 within the lower shell portion. An upper shell portion 32 may be also crimped so as to mesh with crimping 30 as shown in Figure 4, or uncrimped as desired. In both instances upper shell portion 32 is retained on the lower shell portion by reason of a tight fit therewith.
The described base is quite inexpensive in manufacture and most sturdy and effective in use. It can carry heavy weights and be subjected to considerable forces without tipping over.
It is apparent that the example shown above has been given solely byway of illustration and not by way of limitation and that the illustration above described is subject to wide variations and modifications without departing from the scope or intent of the present invention. All such variations and modifications are to be included within the scope of the present invention.
What is claimed is:
l. A base for stands and the like, said base comprising an upper shell member, a lower shell member engaging said upper shell member, said shell members'havi'ng central openings formed therein, and a nut member centrally located'in said shell members and having its lower end abutting the inner edge of the opening in said lower member, said nut member having a-..flange-- at its lower end embracing the outer edges of said opening.
4 said opening, said nut member having an upper surface engaging the edge of said central opening of the upper shell portion.
3. A base for stands and the like, said base comprising a lower shell member having a central opening formed therein, and a nut member centrally located in said shell member and having a lower flange embracing the edges of said opening, said shell member having a side wall withla plurality of crimps; formed" therein extending from a point intermediate the bottom and top of said side wall to the top thereof.
