PATENT QFFICE.
KINGSBURY M. JARVIS, OF PEABODY, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TANNING IN VACUUM AND OTHER TANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,105, dated January 30, 1872.
Specification describing certain improvements in Method of Suspending Hides in Vacuum-Tanks for Tanning, invented by KINGS- BURY M. JARVIS, of Peabody, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts.
My invention consists in an improved method of suspending hides in vacuum or other tanks for tanning, so that a greater number of hides may be put into the tank in the same space, with a better circulation of the tanning-liquor around the hides. Less time is required to fill the tanks; no injury results to the hides; and the whole operation of tanning with the vacuum-tank is facilitated. In the present method of using vacuum-tanks for tanning leather the hides are merely nailed to supports in the tank. In this Way there is no regularity in the suspension of the hides, more time is consumed in getting the hides properly fixed, and it is impossible to get so many hides into the same space as by the mode here proposed. My invention does not relate in any way to the process of tanning by means of vacuum-tanks; and I do not claim any part of that process.
The drawing represents an elevation of a vacuumtank, showing my improved method of suspending the hides.
The vacuum-tank A is made in the usual manner, and has a number of brackets or supports, B, arranged near the top at regular distances. These brackets hold and retain a number of bars or rods, 0. These bars may be made of wood or other suitable material.
D D are hooks, which are placed on the bars (3. They are arranged so as to be moved on the rods, and to be placed in any required position. These hooks should be made of some metal not liable to be corroded by the tanning solution; and they are also made so that one or more hides may be suspended from each hook, having double jams for that purpose. Holes are punched in the hides and they are suspended, commencing on one side of the tank and continuing until it is filled. 7
My invention is in practical use in a large tannery, and is Worked successfully in facilitating the hanging of the hides, in doing it in less time, and in producing a better circulation of the tanning-liquor between the hides. The hides are arranged at right angles with the bars 0, and the hooks D are arranged so as to slide on the bars 0, thus allowing the hides to be packed closely as the tank is filled, which allows a maximum quantity of hides filling the space in the tank to a maximum quantity of tanning solution, and preventing a waste of space and quantity of liquor.
I claim as my invention, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent- In vacuum or other tanks for tanning leather, the rods or bars G and hooks D, constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the purpose of suspending the hides in said tanks, in the manner shown and set forth.
