ably supporting the free end of a tiltable adjustable gate, and locking the gate against tilting. gate of the general type mentioned, regardless of whether the gate is of steel or wood construction or the like. The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, efiicient, durable, and satisfactory, that may be used wherever found applicable. The device is substantially inexpensive, and
may be readily applied to any of the gates I now in use without requiring any remodeling of the gate. Other objects and advan tages of the construction herein described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein made.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, particularly Fig. 1, 1 and 2 are the fence gate posts between which is arranged the gate. The type of gate shown comprises the end bars 3 and 4 and the connecting bars 5 and 6, the gate ordinarily being covered with any suitable form of wire or wire fabric. One end of the gate is pivotally supported or carried by one of the gate posts. As shown, post 8 is supported by the hinge members 7 carried The device is applicable for any,
by the vpost 1, the arrangement being such that the gate may be adjusted to any desired position or height from the ground. In the construction shown the bars-5 and 6 are provided with members 9, which are pivotally connected at S to the end bars 3 and 4, so that the gate may be tilted or the free end raisedor lowered, as indicated in the dotted lines. My improved attachment is adapted to support the free end of the gate as desired, and also to lock it against tilting or raising when so desired. 7
As most clearly shown in Fig. l, I extend a cable 10, or the equivalent, from the upper end of the post '3 at the pivoted or supported end of the gate, the same being shown secured at point 11. The member 10, which may be in the form of a wire or rod, of any desired size, is provided with a chain 12 at the free end, 13 being a ring which may be arranged at the free end of the chain, if so desired. On the gate atthe free end I provide a member arranged to detachably engage the chain 12. As shown,
' this consists of a plate or member 16 formed with a slot 17 extending from the edge to approximately the center, or a little past the center, themember being dished or concaved as shown at 18. The member 16 is formed in the preferred construction with a flange or offset portion 14 on the side of part 16, which is dished, the flange being formed integral with the part 9, or otherwise suitably secured to the gate frame at the desired point.
In the construction, shown I form an opening or hole 15 through the flange 14 and pass the bolt 8 therethrough, the bolt also serving to pivotally connect the member 9 to the end post or bar. IVhen so constructed the free end of the gate may be raised, or that is the gate tilted, as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The free end may be supported at any desired point by engaging the desired chain link with the member 16 at the slot therein, it being understood that the size and style of chain may be as preferred. As shown, member 16 is preferably positioned on the gate at an angle (see Fig. 2) so that the pull or strain is substantially at a right angle to member 16. The member being dished or concave, as shown, the chain does not slip out easily or accidentally.
To lock or prevent the tilting of the gate or its accidental raising by stock, I provide a locking device substantially similar to the supporting device, except that the same extends from the lower fixed end of the gate to the upper free end of the gate, or that is substantially from opposite corners. For this purpose I have shown cable 19 secured at 20, and provided with a chain 21, arranged to engage the upper fastening or engaging member 16. As is obvious, when this locking member is employed the gate cannot be raised or tilted without first releasing the chain at the upper fastening member. When both the supporting device and the locking device are in operative position the gate is substantially a, rigid gate,
having all the advantages thereof. The gate may be adjusted to compensate for sagging of the gate posts, or to clear obstructions when opening the same, or it may be tilted and locked in tilted position so as to permit small stock to pass under the same, and yet prevent other stock getting under the gate and lifting the same so as to be able to get through. The device is particularly simple, and may be applied on practically any type of gate now in use, without reconstructing the gate, and with a minimum of labor.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from thespirit of my invention; hence I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and uses mention'ed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :7-
1. A gate attachment of the kind described, comprising a member formed with a slot therein extending from one edge to near the center, and substantially dished at the center, a laterally extending flange at one edge, and means extending through said flange for securing said slotted member to the gate near one corner of the free end thereof, said member tilted at an angle to the end bar of the gate, means arranged to detachably engage said member at the inner end of said slot, and means for connecting said engaging means with the opposite corner at the hinged end of the gate.
2. A gate securing device of the kind described, comprising a pair ofmembers, each member slightly dished and formed with a slot extending from substantially the center of the dished portion to one edge, each member having a flange atone side extending laterally from the concave side, means for securing said members to the free end of the gate, one substantially near the upper corner and one substantially nearthe lower corner, means secured at the u per pivoted end of the gate and arranged to detachably engage the lower one of said members, and means secured to the lower hinged end of the gate, and arranged to detachably engage the upper of said members.
3. A gate attachment of the kind described, comprising cables, one secured'to the upper pivotally supported corner of the gate and extending to the lower corner at the free end of the gate, the other secured to the lower corner of the pivoted end of the gate and extended to the opposite upper corner of the free end of the gate, and a chain arranged on the free end of each cable, and means carried at the free end of the gate adjacent the upper and lower corners thereof for engaging said chains as desired.
