Description

porting base.
NITE@ STATS PATENT OFFIC WILLIAM WERT TONG, OF CLARKSVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
SWINGING GATE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WELL-m1 VERT ToNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksville, in the county of El Dorado, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in gates and more especially farm gates, the object of the invention being to produce a gate which can be readily opened and shut without the necessity of leaving the vehicle and one which will swing easily and quickly when unlatched. i
A further objectof the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive gate and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for t-he purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate complete. Fig. 2 is a front view of a sup- Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on a line of Fig. 3. Fig. 4 is a side view of a swinging hinge.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference 1 designates the supporting base for the gate which member has flanges 2 for securing the same to a suitable supporting post 3 secured in the ground. Said member l has a central V-shaped slot 4 and outer rearwardly sloping sides 5 such slope commencing at the front apex a of the member 1 and gradually sloping rearwardly and outwardly.
In the slot 4 normally rests a V-shaped bottom supporting plate 6 of a main supporting post 7 of the gate which post 7 has projecting eyes 3 fitting normally over vertical pins 9 held by supports 10 secured in a supporting post 11 secured in the ground.
12 is the outer post of the gate and 13 are the cross panels from the post 7 to the post 12 while 14, is a brace member extending Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed 'March 28, 1910.
Seria-.1 No. 551,956.
from the upper end of the post 7 to the lower end of the post 12 and between the panels 13.
15 is a latch bar pivotally secured at 16 to the beam 14 and projecting through a slot 17 in the post 12 and normally engaging a catch 18.
From the bar 15 cables 19 extend over swiveled pulleys 20 on the upper panel 13 and hence over swiveled pulleys 21 on the outer ends of projecting arms 22 inserted into the post 11 on each side thereof, the ends of said cables having handle rings 23. The arms 22 are braced underneath by blocks 24 and above by cross braces 25.
In practice, by operating either cable 19 it lifts the latch bar 15 from the catch 18 and also lifts the gate upward until the member 6 rests on the pivotal point a and it then rides freely and quickly down the slope 5 thus throwing the gate open and to close the gate the opposite cable 19 is operated which carries the member 6 back up the slope 5 until it reaches the pivotal point a when the weight of the gate drops it into normal position in the slot 4.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
Vhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A gate comprising a base member having a central vertical `v'-shaped slot, a supporting post having a V-shaped lower end resting normally in said slot, such post carrying a gate, such base member having flat sloping sides, each side coming to a point at the front end of the corners of the sides of said slot and sloping outwardly and rearwardly from said point, and means for elevating said gate.
2. A gate comprising a base supporting member having a V-shaped slot, the outer edges of said supporting member sloping outward and rearward from the front upper corners of the sides of said slot, a gate having a base member rest-ing normally in said slot, and means for raising said gate.
Patented Oct. 22, 1912.
3. A gate comprising a base member hayand downwardly to its said lower end, and ing a Vertical V-shaped slot, a supporting a means for lifting said gate as described. l0 post having a V-shaped lower end resting In testimony whereof I aliix my signature normally in said V-shaped slot, such post in presence of two witnesses.
carrying a gate, suoli base member having WLLAM WERT TONG. fiat sloping sides, each side having its upper Witnesses:
end of a lesser width than its lower end and JOSHUA R. WEBSTER,
sloping from such upper end baokwardly FRANK H. CARTER.
