It is .a particular object to provide a device of this character which .is :adaptable to use with either liqnidpor powder disinfectant.
A further important object is to give ;a device of this character which will not tend to waste the disinfectant, and will tend to cause .a fowl .to leave the device as soon .as it has been subjected to one treatment. 7 7
An important .aim of the invention is to give an improved mounting and construe tion for such .a device, and it is an especial advantage thereof that it is adjustable to accommodate 'fowls of different \weight, the
weight :of the fowls 'being .used to operate the device.
My appliance has also the advantage that it induces a considerable amount of exercise in fowls, and may be used for that purpose alone, when not employed as disinfectant device.
It is a particular object to give a desirable construction .a device for automatically spraying a fowl with powder or liquid disinfectant. It is .also an aim to give .a desirable, specific construction in a fowl operated blowing device. Another object is to give an improvement in nozzle devices for such purposes.

In order that the device may be conveniently used either out of doors or in a poultry house or -other place, it is :mounted upon a board 10, with a cross piece 11, forming a base somewhat in the form of the letter T. The appliance in this embodi- Jnent includes a resiliently supported lever '12,. normally extending diagonally upward toward its forward end, where -a short transverse perch 13 is provided. A V V The mounting of the lever in the present case comprises a heavy strip of sheet metal having its central portion bent so as to form a a partly cylindrical portion 16, the end portions being abruptly turned outwardly in a common plane to :set snugly upon the upper surface of the board 10, and at a distance from the first point of outward bending the end portions are bent upwardly and inwarclly and attached to the adjacent circular portion forming braces 17. The circular part has snugly fitted therein a rubber ball 14, which is preferably supported on the interior a suitable spring 19 to hold it distended, and the ball is provided with a suitable connection at one side, as at 20, from which a hose 21 is led. The metal 16 is resilient, and at the forward side is slitted as at 22, forming a spring tongue 23, which may be pressed inwardly to bear against the ball for expulsion of its contents. The tongue 23 has secured thereon a suitable heavy plate 24, provided with a centrally recessed boss 25, interiorly threaded, in which is screwed a section of pipe 26, forming the inner or lower end of the lever 12. The boss 25 is provided with a lateral extension or nipple 27, having an opening therethrough communicating with the bottom of the recess in the boss 25, so that communication with the interior of the pipe 25 may be formed through this nipple. The
hose 21 is fitted over the nipple, so that when or collar 28, screwed thereinto, in order to tighten the pipe 27 upon the one 26 and hold it in adjusted position. Suitable packing means may be provided as at'29, or elsewhere in the telescopic joint, as found desirable. Engaged upon the pipe 26 inwardly of the collar 28 there is a slidable collar 30, having an eye 31 at its upper side for engagement of a cord'or cable 32, which is extended therefrom upwardly over a pulley 33 and downwardly a distance immediately inward of the outer end of the pipe section 27, to support a cabbage head 34 or other suitable food, for a purpose to be explained. The collar 30 is also provided cured in adjusted positions.
Slidable upon the outer part of the pipe section 27 there is a collar 36 secured by means of a binding screw 37 and having trunnions 38 extending horizontally at each side, on which there are pivoted arms 39 carrying a short perch 13, before mentie 4O spaced intermediately thereof, a lug 41 being provided on the collar 36 to engage this cross tie to limit pivotal movement of the perch toward the outer end of the pipe 27. The perch is kept yieldably in this position by means of a small spring 42' connected to the arm 39 at one side and having an arm 43 bearing slidably upon the collar 36 at its inner part. The outer end of the pipe 27 is threaded and has engaged thereon the nozzle before mentioned, the base of which is suitably enlarged and interiorly threaded for engagement on the outer end of the pipe 27. The construction of the nozzle may be of any suitable and well known kind used for the purposes in view, there being well known devices for spraying powder and also others for spraying liquids which may be adapted, as required. It is to be noted that in the ini tial position of the perch 13, its forward edge is very close to the tip of the nozzle, this edge of the perch being recessed to prevent the tip of the nozzle from being closed. The tip of the nozzle is located indefinitely upon the perch.

In Fig. 7 there is shown a modification of this device with respect to the mounting of the lever, in which the inner section 26 of the pipe is carried upon a hinged tongue '23, movable in the circular part 16' of a rigid base element similar to that first described. of the fowl most desired. In Fig. 8 there is show particular {form of nozzle dapted to operate efficiently with my appliance, and to insure eflicient discharge of disinfectant. The-nozzleinthisinstance comprises a bod casting 45 adapted to be screwed on the end of .a pipe as desired, and having a .-suitable duct therethrough. The outer end of the nozzle body is tapered .and pointed upwardly so as to direct .material passing :therethrough, .properly, and at its base is provided with a spring pressed valve 46, by which ingress of air from the pipe 27 through the nozzle tate thepowder if such he used under movement of the pipe 27 downwardly when a fowl gains the perch 13. When powder is used, the ball 49 does not require to :be of a height to engage over the inner end .of the nipple 48 within the reservoir 47.
In :Fig. 9 there is shown a modification of the mounting of the device with respect to the puff ball, which consists in providing a suitable supporting frame 50 in which the puff ball 51 may be set, including standards 52, upon which there is pivoted diametrically over the ball a swinging bracket arm having movement to engage the ball and being nearly or quite concentric with the ball at one position. The ball is formed with a small neck 54 inserted through an opening in a partly spherical plate 55', mounted on the end of a pipe 27 corresponding to the pipe 27 before described.
In Fig. 10 there is shown a further modification of the device in which a pipe 27 is utilized for the function of the pipe 27, the lower end of the pipe only being shown, this being extended in form of a loop 57, engaged around a suitable sleeve 58 engaged revolubly upon a shaft 59 carried in standards .60 upon the baseboard 6.1. In Fig. 1 there is shown a :form of nozzl suitable tor ,use with the device in such constructions as illustrated in Figs. 8 and ,9, this nozzle comp ising .a base .portion 65 having an outer end interiorly threaded for engagement on the end .of the pipe, the inner part being suitably shaped to provide a seat for a spring .66 disposed therein and bearing toward the open .end of the base upon a ball s67 iooselysdisposed therein. An annular nut 68 is screwed into the threaded part of the base into engagement with .the ball to form .a seat therefor, by which means passage of air through the nozzle is resisted until itreaohes beyond the desired pressure. The -.nut168 is small enough to leave room for the engagement of a pipe in the end .of the nozzle outwardly of the nut. The nozzle is extended vertically downward norreally, from adjacent the spring 66, where it is then .curved ,upwardly and tapered as at :69, as may he found desirable. In the V-bight 70 formed at the lower part, a suitable internally threaded extension 71 is formed, extending horizontally, into which the pipe .or nipple .48 before described may be screwed.
In Fig. 12 there is shown .a form of container for disinfectant suitable for use with the nozzle previously described, consisting of a simple rectangular box 72, having on one end an outlet nipple 73 adapted to screw into the extension 71 of the nozzle, and provided with a valve seat 74 therearound at the inner side through which there is inserted a needle 7 5, having a valve portion 7 6 at its base, the stem 77 of which extends longitudinally through the box and is threaded in a suitable fitting 78 at the end ofthe box opposite the nipple 7 3. The stem projects from the box adjacent the fitting 78, and has a lock nut 79 engaged thereon by which it may be secured in adjusted po sition. A cross pin 80 is engaged through the outer end of the stem 77, by which it maybe turned for adjustment. A plurality of balls 81 are disposed loosely in the box 72, so that in operation. of the device by a fowl, the balls will roll about, and the contents of the box will be agitated.
WVhat is claimed:
1. A lever, resilient means supporting the lever in predetermined initial position, a perch on the lever, a spraying deviceadjacent the perch for action upon a fowl when on the perch, a blowing device construeted to be actuated by said lever, duct connections between the blowing device and the spraying device, and operative connections between said lever and the blowing'de- 1 prising a base element, a blower device com- "prising stationary and oscillatable memvice, whereby the weight of a fowl on the lever'will operate the blower for the pur poses described.
2. A lever, resilient means supporting the lever in predetermined initial position, a perch on the lever, a spraying device adjacent the perch for action upon a fowl when on the perch, a blowing device, connections between the blowing device and the spraying device, operative connections be tween said lever and blowing device, a vertically movable food support adjacent the perch, and operative connections between the food support and said lever for upward movement of the support under downward movement of the lever.
3. In a device of the class described, a lever, a perch thereon, a vertically movable food support, located adjacent the perch, and operative connections between the lever and the food support for upward movement' of the food support under downward movement of the lever.
4. In a device of the class described, a movable, resiliently supported perch, a vertically movable food support, and operative connections between the perch'and the food support for opposite movement of the two.
5. An article of the class described, comprising a base element, a perch mounted thereon for upward and downward movement, resilient means operative to hold the perch yieldably at the upper limit of its movement, a nozzle upward and downward movable with the perch and located closely adjacent thereto, a blower device, ductconnections between the'blower and nozzle, and operative connections between said perch and the blower device.

A. device of the class described com prising a base element, a puff ball, a fixed element at one side thereof, and an oscillatable element disposed at the opposite side of the puff ball and movable for compression thereof between the stationary and oscillatable element, a lever mounted on the oscillatable element, a perch at the outer end of the lever, a nozzle adjacent the perch, and

9. In a fowl actuated poultry disinfecting device, a vertically movable nozzle carrying element, resilient means tending to. hold it at the upper limit of its movement, a
blower device, duct connections between the. .blower device and the nozzle device, operative connections between the blower and the vertically movable element, a perch and -means to support the perch adjacent the nozzle and pivotally for movement away from the nozzle under action of a fowl, and resilient means tending to hold the perch in a predetermined initial position. p

In a device'of the class described, a resiliently supported lever comprising telescoped sections, means to secure the lever in extension ad ustments, a perch at the outer part thereof, a spraying device thereadjacent, a blower device, duct means between V the blower device and-spraying device and operative connections between the blower device and the lever.
