Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boyceville, in the county of Dunn and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Stock-Watering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stock-watering devices of the class wherein the weight of the animals is utilized to elevate the supply of water, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation.
In the drawings thus employed,-Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts above the ground.
The improved apparatus may be applied to any suitable source of supply of the water to be elevated, but will generally be erected over a well, (represented at 10.)
In the improved device is comprised a cyl-' inder 11, preferably disposed below the bottom line of the well 10, so that the full benefit of the supply will be secured when the stage of water is low. Movably disposed in the cylinder is a plunger 12 open at the ends, with the upper end preferably contracted and with an annular channel 13 around the upper opening. Movably disposed above the plunger 12 is a closure member 14, adapted to engage the channel 13 by its rim 15 and with a tubular rod 16, leading from the upper end. Guide-rods 17 connect the closure member with the plunger, and thus provide means for a limited movement between the same when the tubular rod 16 is operated, as will be obvious. By this means when the plunger is elevated the closure member will be separated from the plunger a distance equal to the length of the rods 17 and then asthe upward movement continues the plunger will be carried upward the full length of the stroke of the tubular rod. Then at the first portion of the return stroke the closure member is seated in the channel 13 and cuts off the water, and the completion of the downstroke forces the water which is within the cylinder below the plunger upward into the tubular rod, and this action is repeated at each stroke, as will be be obvious.
Attached to the upper end of the tubular rod 16 is a chamber 18, and extending above this chamber is a relatively large pipe 39, terminating in receptacle 19 for the water to be elevated, the receptacle forming the drinking trough for the animals, and the pipe serving as a tubular rod continuing the tubular rod 16. A valve 20 is disposed within the chamber 18 and seated above the tubular rod 16, also beneath the tubular rod-section 39, and within the receptacle 19 is disposed a float 21 and connected to the valve 20 by a stem 22. The tubular member 39 is provided with a small vent-aperture 32 above the water-line in the well, (indicated at 40,) the object to be hereinafter explained. A platform 23 is arranged contiguous to the receptacle l9 and swinging from one end, as at 2 1, and connected, as by an arm 25 andlink 26, to the tubular rod-section 39. A weight 27 is suspended in the well 10 and connected by a cable 28, leading over a guide-pulley 29, to the arm 25 on the tubular rod-section 39. By this means the gravity force of the weight maintains the platform 23 yieldably'in elevated position and the plunger 12 likewise is maintained in elevated position.
. The cylinder 11 and the receptacle 19 will be so proportioned that when the platform 23 is depressed the amount of water elevated will just fill the receptacle, and the capacity of the receptacle will preferably be proportioned to the required supply for one drinking, and the size may .be varied as required.
Generally the device will be arranged to supply two head of stock at the same time, but can be increased or decreased in size as required.
The float 21 is of relatively heavy material, such as wood, and will balance the valve 20, so that the latter will be held poised within the chamber 18 during the down ward stroke of the plunger and permit the Water to pass to the receptacle 19. Thus when the animal passes to the platform 23 and depresses the same the plunger is operated and the receptacle filled, and as soon asthe platform reaches the end of its stroke upward the pressure ceases and the valve settles to its seat by gravity and holds the water in the receptacle. If from any cause an excess of water rises into the receptacle, the float 21 is affected thereby and rises and closes the valve 20 and shuts off any further upward flow, and the surplus water soon runs off through the vent 32, together with any water not consumed.
A Windlass 33 is connected to some portion of the stationary support, such as the fence or guard 34, disposed'around the platform and well, and provided with a cable 35, leading to the weight 27 and provided with an operating-handle 36 to enable the weight to be elevated and the platform caused to descend, if it is required to operate the pump when no animals are upon the platform.
The platform 23 is provided with vertical guard members 37 38 to prevent the animals approaching the water-trough except over the platform and also to prevent any refuse matter passing from the platform into the well or upon the ground adjacent to the well.
With the chamber 18 and valve 20 disposed at a relatively low point and below the top or closure of the well, and with the vent 32 also disposed below the closure of the well the water will slowly escape from the receptacle 19 and the exposed portion of the tubular member 39, and thus obviate danger of freezing in cold weather.
The receptacle 19 is supported by diagonal braces 41 42 from the platform 23 and tubular member 39.
The device is simple in construction, can be readily applied and inexpensively manufactured, and operates effectually for the purposes described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In adevice of the class described, a cylinder, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod between said receptacle and plunger, a valve operating within said tubular rod, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, and means for actuating said plunger and the rod and receptacle associated therewith.
2. In a device of the class described, a cylinder, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod between said receptacle and plunger and mounted for vertical movement, a valve within said tubular rod, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, and a platform movably disposed and connected to operate said plunger and the rod and receptac'le associated therewith.
3. In adevice of the class described, a cylinder, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod between said receptacle and plunger and mounted for vertical movement, a valve within said tubular rod, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, a
platformmovably disposed and connected to operate said plunger and the rod and receptacle associated therewith, and a weight connected to maintain said platform yieldably in elevated position.

In a device of the class described, a cylinder, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod between said receptacle and plunger and mounted for vertical movement, a valve within said tubular rod, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, a platform movably disposed and connected to operate said plunger and the rod and receptacle associated therewith, a weight connected to maintain said platform yieldably in elevated position, and a Windlass associated with said weight and connected thereto by a cable, whereby the weight may be elevated inclependently of the platform.

In a device of the class described, a cylinder, a plunger for operation in said cylinder and open at the ends, a closure to said plunger, guide members connecting said closure member movably with said plunger, a tubular rod extending from said closure member, a receptacle connected to said rod, a valve within said tubular rod and means for operating said rod.
6. In a device of the class described, a cylinder, a plunger for operation in said cylinder and open at the ends and with an annular channel around the open upper end, a closure to said plunger with its rim for bearing within said channel, guide members connecting said closure movably upon said plunger, a tubular rod leading from said closure member, a receptacle connected to said tubular rod, a valve within said tubular rod, and means for operating said rod.
7. In a device of the class described, a well having a cylinder disposed below the bottom thereof and communicating therewith, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod between said receptacle and plunger, a valve operative within said tubular rod, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, and means for actuating said plunger and the rod and receptacle associated therewith.
8. In a device of the class described, a well having a cylinder disposed therein, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod between said receptacle and plunger, a valve operative within said tubular rod and below the upper line of the well, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, and means for actuating said plunger and the rod and receptacle associated therewith.
9. In a device of the class described, a well having a cylinder disposed therein, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod bel I .A
tween said receptacle and plunger, a valve operative within said tubular rod and below the upper line of the well, a vent in the tubular rod between said receptacle and valve and below the top line of the well, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, and means for actuating said plunger and the rod and receptacle associated there- With.
10. In a device of the class described, a cylinder, a plunger operating in said cylinder, a receptacle for the liquid to be elevated, a tubular rod between said receptacle and plunger and mounted for vertical movement, a valve within said tubular rod, a float within said receptacle and connected to said valve, and a platform movably disposed and connected to operate said plunger and the rod and receptacle associated therewith, brace members between said receptacle and platform and between said receptacle and tubular rod.
