To all whom t mag/concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. J. SIEVER- Knorr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hood River, 1n the county of Hood River and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Insecticide-Sprayers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends generally improvements in sprayers and more particularly relates to an insecticide sprayer.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above character designed for containing and spraying a powder on trees, plants, etc., for exterminating insects thereon.
More particularly the present invention embraces the provision of a device of the above character wherein improved fan means is employed in conjunction with a feeding hopper and a discharge pipe for drawing powder from the hopper and forcing it through the discharge pipe which is adapted to be held and manipulated in the hand of the operator in assuring of the proper depositing of the powder on the trees, etc.
As a further improvement this invention includes the provision of an insecticide sprayer wherein improved means is employed in the feeding hopper for regulating the passage of powder to the fan and consequently regulating the amount of powder ejected by the nozzle. v v
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the vatious parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention;

Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device;
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the gate valve and its control lever.
Similar characters of reference are emloyed in all the above described views to inicafte corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a supporting platform 1 on which is mounted a circular casing 2 the latter being preferaibly supported 1n spaced relation to the platform through the instrumentality of legs 3 secured at the upper ends to the opposite sides of the cylinder b-y means of suitable fastening devices 4 and terminating at their lower ends in feet 5 which in turn are secured to the platform by fasteners 6. The opposite sides of the casing are provided with alining apertures for a purpose that will presently appear. Connected to one side of the casing is one end of a powder containing feeding hopper 8 the outer end of which is supported in spaced relation to the platform. by means of suitable supports 9. The sides of the hopper are slightly converged toward the bottom while communication is established between the hopper andthe casing by the provision of an opening 10 in one side of the casing beneath the adjacent opening 7 As intimated, suitable means have been provided for drawing powder into the casing and forcing it therefrom. In reducing this feature of the invention to practice, a shaft 11 is journaled through the openings in the casing and in the hopper and through the outer end of the hopper the respective ends of the shaft being supported in the upper ends of standards 12, carried by the platform while bearing brackets 13 serve as a meansl of journalin the outer portions' of the shaft 11 upon the standard. A suitable fan indicated in its entirety by the numeral 14 is employed and preferably eonsists of a collar 15 carried on that portion ofthe -shaft within the casing whileblades 16 project from the collar and op erate Within the casing. Upon the rotation of the shaft which is desirably effected by connecting a pulley wheell to one end thereof and training about the pulley a motion transmitting belt 18, the fan is rotated by a suitable driving medium as shown in Fig. 4.-
In order to assure of the discharge of the powder an opening 19 is formed in the lower periphery of the casing 2 while connected to the casing is an elbow pipe 2() tothe outer portion of which is swingingly connected as at 21, another elbow pipe 22 kwhile a fiexible conducting pipe is connected Ito the outer end of the elb'ow 22. A nozzle 24 of any conventional construction is oper-ably conneoted'to the outer end of the eXib-le conducting pipe 23. Of course by this arrangement it is apparent that upon actuation of the shaft the suction created within the casing draws powder through the inlet opening 10 into the casing and as the fan rotates the powder will be forced through the outlet opening and the discharge pipe comprising the elbow sections 20 and 22 and the iieXible pipe 23 and the nozzle 24. This flexible pipe of course is adapted to be held in the hand of the operator for assuring of a proper depositing of the powder on the trees, shrubs, etc. with a view to exterminating insects thereon.
With a View toward providing means for regulating the passage of powder from the Y hopper into the casing and consequently regulating the sprayir "f of the powder at the nozzle improved means fave been employed in the present instance consisting of a partition 25 one end of which is connected through the instrumentality of suitable fastening devices 26 to the inner surface of one side of the hopper while the opposite end terminates short lof the opposite side, as indicated in the drawings. This partition acts as -a false bottom and supports the powder preventing it from entering the lower compartment 27 while the space lbetween the outer edge of the partition and the adjacent side of the hopper constitutes an opening from the upper compartment 28 into the lower compartment. A swingingly mounted gate valve, indicated in its entirety by the numeral 29 is now employed and preferably consists of a plate-like body 30 preferably of rectangular configuration and from the opposite ends of which and adjacent one marginal edge project trunnions 31 journaledin suitable openings in the adjacent side of the casing and adjacent the outer end of the hopper, at points oppo-` site tothat to which the partition is secured. The plate is of such a size that when swung in a horizontal position the outer edge will terminate in close relation with the outer edge of the partition so as to in eii'ect close the opening. A handle lever 32 projects substantially at right angles from the upper surface of the plate-like body 30 of the gate valve and adjacent one end thereof extending upwardly in close relation with the adj acent .face of the casing. The handle lever terminates in a knob 33 at a point above the upper edge of the hopper and it is through the instrumentality of this knob that the swmglng of the gate valve is facilitated. Cooperating with the upper portion of the handle lever is a segmental rack 34 which is carried by the upper edge of the inner end l respect to the partition in vary-ing the size of the passage from the upper compartment 28 to the lower compartment 27. Thisarrangement-of course serves as a means for regulatmg the passage of the powder to the lower compartment 27 from which point it 1s drawn into the casing through the operation ofthe fan and consequently discharged asis apparent.
It is believed that in view of the foregoing description a furtherdetailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise Iit is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven- I tion could 'be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the follow- 1ng clalms is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which-as a matter of language' might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus described mv invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described including a circular casing having a central aperture in the opposite sides and also provided with an intake in one sideoand adjaedge of the partition in regulating the passage of powder into the lower compartment, a shaft journaled through the hopper and the opposed central openings 'in the sides of the casing, a fan carried by the shaft within the casing for creating a suction therein for drawing powder through the -intake and forcing it through the outlet, and a discharge pipe connected to the outlet.
2. A device of the character described including a casing provided with a central inlet opening, a peripheral outlet opening and feed hopper having one end connected to one side of the casing, means for supporting the opposite end of the hopper, a partition connected to the inner surface of one side of the hopper and providing upper and lower compartments therein the lower` 4of which communicates with the inlet opening, a swingingly mounted gate valve mounted within the h-'opper adjacent the opposite side thereof for eoperafting with the adjacent edge of the partition in varying the space therebetween for allowing powder to pass into the lower compartment preparatory-to being drawn therefrom, a handle exten ing from the valve, a segmentalrack carried by the casing and with which the handle isl adjustably engaged for retain-ing the valve.v in various adjusted. positions, and a discharge pipe leadingl from the casing and through which powder is forced after being drawn into the casing.
3. A device of the kind described includ- V ing a casing having a center intake opening and a peripheral discharge opening, a hopper mounted beside the casing and formed with curved side walls converging toward the bottom and connecting adjacent the intake .opening of the casing, a. partition plate mounted on one of the side walls and disposed above the intake opening, a valve member consisting of a plate-like body.
pivoted in the hopper adjacent the other side wall sothat one edge of the plate may be swung into or away from contact with the edge of the partition whereby that part of the hopper adjacent the intake opening may be divided from t-he remainder of the hopper, a, rack carried at the top of the hopper, a lever carried by said pivot-ally mounted plate and engageable with the rack whereby the said plate may be dropped from contact with the partition to eHect communication lbetween themain part of the hopper and the inlet ,opening of the casing, and a fan rotatably mounted in the casing, whereby an insecticide powder 'maybe placed in the hopper and admitted to the casing as desired and discharged therefrom by the fan for the purpose specified.
