Description

H. F. ANDERSON.
- SIGN CHARACTER.
APPLICATION FILED APR.9, 1914.

HAIR-RY F. ANDERSON, OF MARION, INDIANA.
SIGN CHARACTER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed April 9, 1914. Serial No. 830,741.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sign Characters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sign letters or characters. I
The object of the invention is to provide a sign character composed of transparent and translucent glass having a hollow center and a decorated marginal flange or border.
With these and other obj ects'in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a sign letter as it leaves the mold and before it is ground;
Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view after the letter has been ground;
Fig. 4: is a rear elevation of the letter after it is ground and before being chipped;
Fig. 5 is a similar View after it is chipped;
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the completed letter; and
Fig. 7 is a complete sign letter constructed in accordance with this invention.
In the embodiment illustrated, a sign Grant and State character is shown inthe form of a letter 1 which is produced by first causing a gatherer having the character to be produced in cameo thereon, to collect or gather white or any desired color and then crystal, which process is known in the art as casing. The gatherer is so constructed that the letter 1 is made hollow with a border 2.
When the letter has been removed from the mold and has become hard and cool, the inner face thereof which contains the translucent lining or coating, is ground by any suitable grinder until substantially all of the translucent coating is removed from the border thereby producing a letter having a translucent body with a transparent border which letter may then be decorated in any desired manner. The inner face of the border 2 is then preferably first chipped as shown at 3 and then a coating of fired gold or any other desired color is applied thus producing a very attractive, catchy sign character.
I claim as my invention:
A sign character comprising a hollow body having a marginal flange, the outer faces of said body and flange being transparent, the inner face of said body portion being translucent and the inner face of said flange being chipped and having a decorative coating applied to its inner face.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. A. GRIESBAUER, CARL GIOVANNETTI.
