vof Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vWashing-Machine Gearing, of which the following is the speciiication.
rlhis invention relates to gearing, and par? ticularlyito gearing applicable to washing machines and the like.
It is an object of the inventionto provide a simple. and economically constructed washing machine and to eliminate therefrom all possible gearing connections while retaining all of the functions which a combined. washer and wringer mechanism should be able to perform.
It is another object of the invention to provide a washing machine having a novel form of drive for the dolly and a construction in which most of the operating mechaimportant feature of the invention and it isbelieved to be broadly new.
Further objects and advantages ofthe invention vwill appear as the description to follow proceeds. l

1 represents a platform provided W1th a Wooden top. and channeled iron legs 2 suitably braced. A supplementary platform is y provided comprising angle irons 3 and 3 firmly bolted-to the legs Uponv one of the angle irons 3 is mountedy a bearing 4' alined with which isa bearing 5, the bearings l and 5 supporting the main drive shaft 6 of the machine, which is provided with belt wheel 7. The bearing 5 is supported upon the upraised inner end of a shelf 8 which atl one end is bolted to one of the angle irons 3 and at its inner end is provided with an upraised portion 9 having a lug 1() bolted to one of the angle irons 3. The shelf 8 is provided with a vertical bearing 1,2 in which is mounted the vertical shaftll which. at its upper end is connected to drive the wringer in a fashion hereinafter to be described. Supported upon the bearing 1Q and secured to the shaft 11 is a beveled crown gear 13 in mesh with a'pinion 14 upon the drive shaft 6. Adjacent'its lower end the shaft 11 is provided with a transversefpin 15 (see Figs. 7 and 8) below which is sleeved upon the shaft 11 a clutch 16 having upper cani faces 17 terminating in a slot 18. The clutch 16 is provided with a. Aperipheral groove 19 in which is engaged the bent link 20 joining the ends 21 of a fork 22 upon the en d of an arm Q3 which is pivoted in the frame upon a special depending bracket "24 and terminates at its other end in a handle 25 engageable in either of two notches 27 in the strip 28 secured to the support. By this means the clutch 16 may be raised or lowered to engage or disengage the pin 15 with the slot 18. Uponthe lower end of the clutch 16 is a crank arm 30 with which is pivotally connected the bent link 31 which at its other end is pivotally connected with the crank arm 32 mounted upon the lower end of a shaft 33 mounted in a bearing 34 secured to a bracket 35 mounted upon one of the angle irons 3. Shaft 33 at its upper end is mounted in a bearing 36 extended intoI a curved flange 37 secured to the tub and the shaft 33 is provided at its upper end with a crank arm 38 which is pivotally connected to a curved link 39 in turn connected at its forward end to a rack 40.

The entire cover f parts. the stationary segment 4Q is perma nently secured to the tub and carrying a plate `i3 having at either end curved brackets il which are extended downwardly and bolted to the tub, and have upwardly extending portions in 'which is mounted the rod 45 upon which the rack #l0 is sleeved. To the movable lid portion 47 of the tub is attached a plate IS having at its ends bearings 49 for the ends of the rod 45. The rod l5 is held against longitudinal movement b v Cotter pins 50 at its ends. The plate 4R is provided with apertures for the journal of an idler gear, and a dolly shaft Scf cured to the plate 48 by bolts passing through at least a layer of the lid is a casing 53 having a corresponding bearing having an enlarged portion -to cover the idler gear shown. and a curved flan-ge 54 to act as a. guard for the'raclt l0. and a dome to house the upper end of the dolly shaft The dolly shaft is driven by a pinion 56 in mesh with the idler 57, both the dolly shaft and idler 57 being journaled in the plate d8 and casing 53, asV above described.
To drive the machine I provide an electric motor 57V mounted dependingly supported from one of the channel bars 3, and driving the belt pulley 7 on the drive shaft 6. A clamp, represented generally by the Areference numeral 59 holds the lid closed.
The bent lugs 60 are bolted to the shield 54, the Aother end serving to support the cover when in raised position. When the cover is to be raised the wringer may be swung outwardly so as not to interfere.
In operation it will be seen that the belt pulley 7 drives the shaft 6 which drives the bevel crown gear 13 and, therefore, the vertical shaft 11 which drives the Wringer and is connected thereto by a clutch so that the Wringer can be operated or not as desired. The specific construction of the wringer and this operating mechanism forms no part of the presenty invention. By operating the clutch 16 through the handle 23 the shaft 33 may be rocked or not, as desired. Then this shaft is in operation the cylindrical rack 40 is reciprocated driving the idler 57 which through pinion 56 operates the dolly. Because the hinge line of the cover is concentric with the rack 40 and this rack is cylindrical in form the cover may be raised or lowered without disturbing the meshing engagement of the idler 57 with the rack 40.
Having novv described my invention I claim:
l. In apparatus of the class described, a support, a. hinged member on the support, an oscillatory gear on the hinged member, a rack bar for operating the gear, including means for maintaining the engagement of the rack bar with the gear when the hinged member is raised on itsv hinges.

In apparatus of the class described, a drive shaft, a vertical shaft driven therefrom, a vv`econd vertical shaft, connections between said vertical shafts to oscillate the latter tromthe former, a hinged member, an oscillatory shaft on said hlnged member and a link connection between said second vertical shaft and said oscillatory shaft to oscillate the latter, including a rack bar, and means ,to interrupt the driving connections between the two vertical Shafts.

In apparatus of the class described, a support, a vertical shaft thereon adapted t( rotate in vertical bearings, means for oscillating said vertical shaft, a hinged member on said support, an oscillatory shaft on said hinged member, a reciprocal bar connecting said vertical shaft to said oscillatory shaft and lying adjacent and parallel to the hinge line of said hinged member.

In apparatus of the class described, a support, a rotary shaft thereon, a vertical shaft, connections between said rotary shaft and said vertical shaft for oscillating the latter about its own axis from 'the former, a hinged member on the support, an oscillatory shaft in said hinged member, a link connection between said vertical and said oscillatory shafts'.

In apparatus of the class described, a Support, a rotary shaft there/on, a vertical shaft mounted for rotation in vertical bearings, connections between said rotary shaft and said vertical shaft for oscillating the latter from the former, a hinged member on the support, an oscillatory shaft in said hinged member, a link connectionbetween said vertical and said oscillatory shafts, said link connection lying adjacent and parallel to the hinge member.
