Between the upper and lower rings 16, 17, respectively, of the skeletonsleeve 14 there is received a cam grooved sleeve 18 which is rigidly attached to the plunger rod by rivets 19. The sleeve 18 is formed with a spiral cam groove 20 in which is adapted to travel a roller 21 carried by a bracket 22 on the guide plate 23. This guide plate 23 has a circular opening 40 (see Fig.
3) for the passage of the sleeve 18 and a notch 41 for the vertical member of the skeleton sleeve 14:, thus preventing the latter from turning but permitting the sleeve 18 to freely turn. The plunger rod 15, which is hollow and provided with an air escape valve 24 in its top, is further guided nea-r the top by the tl bracket 25 through which it passes. j
The crank shaft 10 is slotted near its outer end and the drive shaft Qis also slotted on its adjacent end. A sliding sleeve 27 carries key on its inner face adapted to enter the slots in the shafts t0 and 26 and forms a means of uniting these shafts; and a set screw 28 may, if desired, be provided in the sleeve 27 to hold it rmly in position. The power shaft 26 is driven by a sprocket chain 29 running over a sprocket wheel 30. The

A section 34 of the cover opposite the bay side of the tub is hinged to the remainder 'of the cover as shown in Fig. l; this swingingA section alords e convenient means of inspecting-the clothes without the .necessity of opening the entire 'cover and also permits of the substantially :full opening of the tub when the cover has been retracted as for as `the hay 3E/will permit. lWe also prefer to provide the power shaft 2 6 with a small pulley '35 for e purpose" later to be de scribed. i
Operation: Assuming that the cover is drawnback, the tub.is charged with the clothes to be Washed and the cover is pulled into the position shown in Fig. 1. @ne or other of the shafts v10, 26, is then turned by hand until the slots are opposite and the sleeve 27 is slipped to the position of Fig. 2 and set in position by the screw 28. The motor 31 then being started motion is coininunicated to the crank shaft i2 and, through the medium of the link 13, vertical reciprocatory motion is transmitted to the skeleton sleeve 14. Inasmuch as the skeleton sleeve sti'addles the sleeve 18 on the Aplunger rod, the latter will be moved up and down end, by means of the roller 2l runningin the spiral groove 20, the plunger rod 15 will ut the saine time vbe turned inthe direction of' s right screw when going down sind in the opposite direction when coming up. Theclothes will thus be subjected not only to an up and down motion `but .also Vwill be swirled back and forth through the water and suds, thus materially aiding in the cleansing operation. When the washing is done the sleeve 27 may be slipped buck to allow the shafts to break and the cover 8 may be pulled'back to almost clear the full -dimensions of the tub.
lf it is desired fi wringer may be mounted. in any convenient place on the machine frame and' may be driven by :i belt or sprocket chain running on. the wheel 35; thus the saine motor may be utilized to run both the washing machine and the wringer, which is a great convenience. f
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
