STOP MECHANISM FOR MACHINERY.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL M. Goornn, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop Mechanisms for Machinery; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
The present invention relates to stop mechanisms for machinery and it has for an object to provide a construction which will utilize the driving or motor power for its operation so as to positively insure a stopping of the machine.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a mangle with the present improvements attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a top view of the stop mechanism, with parts broken away and other parts in section; Fig. is a vertical sectional view in the direction of the axis of the shaft, and Fig. 1 is a vertical section on the line a--a of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is employed a shifter adapted to break connection between driving and driven parts. In this instance, the driving parts comprise a pulley 2, keyed at 3 to a sleeve 4: turning on the shaft 5 which is journaled on frame 14, while the driven parts comprise a sleeve 6, keyed to the shaft 5 at 7 and carrying a pinion 8 connected to the operating parts of the machine to be stopped, such as a mangle A. Connection between such parts is preferably established by an axially movable clutch member 9, keyed at 10 to the sleeve 4 for axial movement thereon and having clutch faces 11 adapted to coiiperate with clutch faces 12 on the sleeve 6. The shifter 1 may be in the form of a lever pivotally supported between its ends at 20 and having one end yoked at 21 and provided with inwardly extending projections 22 operating in an annular groove 23 in clutch member 9.
The mechanism for moving the shifter preferably comprises a swing member 13 or Specification Of Letters Patent.

segment adapted to turn or oscillate 011 the frame 14 about an axis 15 parallel with and below the shaft 5, a stop 16 on the frame eooperating with the abutment 17 on the swinging member to limit the movement of the latter in one direction. The swinging member in this instance has formed on one face a cam surface 18 preferably curved about the axis 15 as a center and adapted to cooperate with a roller 19 on the shifter 1 to move the latter about its axis 20, thus causing the member 9 to be moved out of en gagement with sleeve (3. The lateral strain imposed upon the cam member 13 by the shifter may be taken up by a brace 25) bolted at 30 to the frame 1 1 and having a roller 30 thereon cooperating with that face of the member 13 opposite the one engaged by the shifter.
The movement of the swinging or oscillatory member 13 is preferably effected by a dog 24 pivoted at 25 to the swinging member and having a shoulder 26 thereon adapted to be moved upwardly into the path of radially extending projections 28 of the rotary sleeve 1, whereby during a part of a revolution of said sleeve the dog will be moved (in a direction toward the right in Fig. at) to rock the member 13. The upward movement of the dog is limited by an extension 29, beyond the shoulder 26, which engages the periphery of the sleeve 1.

In this instance a lever 31 pivoted at 39 to the frame let has a surface 33 thereon cooperating with a roller 34-. on the dog in a manner to support said dog substantially in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. t. A stop or shoulder 35 on the lever cooperates with a stop or shoulder 36 on the frame 14tto limit the downward movement of the lever. The upward move ment of the latter is in this instance effected by a pull bar 37 extending upwardly to an arm 38 on the shaft of a finger board 39 which is arranged at the intake of a mangle A, the latter having its drive wheel l0 geared to the pinion 8 of the stop mechanism.
In operation, should the hand of the operative of the mangle engage the finger board 39, the pull bar 37 will swing the lever 31 to carry dog 24: into the path of the projections 28. Upon engagement of one of one side thereof codperating with tween said part and the swingin on weights or springs but utilizes the motive power of the machine to which it is applied as means for actuating it.
I claim as my invention.
1. The combination with a machine hav ing movable parts and detachable driving and driven elements for controlling the operation of said machine parts, of a member for disconnecting said elements, a pivotedcam adapted to actuate said disconnecting member, a dog pivotally mounted on the';
cam for moving the same and means for ad justing the dog into the path of movement of a movable part of the machme independentl of the movement of the ivoted cam.
2. A stop mechanism comprising a shifter for disconnectmg a driven from a driving member, a member mounted to swing and;
having a cam surface thereon concentric with the turning axis of the member and cooperating with the shifter, a part moving with the machine to be stopped, a dog p voted on the swinging member, and means for moving sald dog into engagement with the movable part independently of the movetary member, an arm pivotally mounted on 'ment of the swinging member.

A stop mechanism comprising a pivotally mounted shifter for connecting the driven with the driving member, a member mounted to swing having a cam surface on the shifter, a brace carrying a roller bearing against the opposite side of the shifter, a part moving with the machine to be stopped, and means for establishing connection bemember.
5. The combination with a driving and a driven member and a clutch .for effecting connection between the dr ving member and the driven member, of a pro ection earned by and movable with the driving member, a movable member "controlling the shifting of the clutch, a dog for operating said movable member, means for moving said dog into the path of the projection onfthe driving member, and means actuated by" the movable member for operating the clutch.
6. The combination with a shaft, and a member mounted to turn "thereon and a clutch for effecting driving connection between them, of a projection carried by one ofsaid first two members, a shifter for moving the clutch, aswing member having a cam thereon for cooperation with the shifter, a dog carried by the swing member, and 'means for moving said dog into the path ofthe projection.
7. The combination with a shaft, and a. member mounted to turn thereon and a clutch for establishing connection between them, of a projection carried by one of the "first two members, a pivoted shifter codperating with the clutch, a swing member having a cam on one side thereof concentric with its turning axis to cooperate with the pivoted shifter, a dog pivoted to the swing member, and means for moving said dog into the path of the projection.
8. A stop mechanism comprising a clutch, a shifter for operating it, a ro'tar member having a projection thereon an moving with the machine to be stopped, a pivoted swing member for moving the shifter mounted at one'side of the axis of said rotary member and arranged with its pivot parallel to the axis of rotation of the rothe swing member for actuating the same, and means for moving said arm into the path of the projection independently of the movement of the swing member.
9. A stop mechanism comprising a shifter, a rotary member having a projection thereon and moving with the machine to be stopped, a swing member for moving the shifter pivoted to rotate on an axis independent of and parallel to the axis of the rotary member, an arm pivoted to the swing member, a lever supporting the arm, and means for moving said lever to carry the 1 arm into the .path of the projection.
10. A stop mechanism comprising a shifter, a rotary member having a pro ectionfthereon and mov ng with the maclnne to "be stopped, a swing member for moving the shifter, mounted below the rotary member to turn about an axis parallel with the, axis of rotation of the rotary member,a. pivotedv dog carried by thefswing member, a lever arranged to support the pivoted dog, a stop for the lever, and means for moving said lever to raise the dog into the path offthe projection. A stop mechanism comprising a shifter, a rotary member having a ,projection thereon and moving with the machine to "be stopped, a swing member for moving the shifter mounted below the rotary member to turn about an axis parallel with the axis of rotation of the rotary member, a stop for limiting the movement of the swing member, a pivoted dog carried by the swing member, a lever arranged to support the pivoted dog, and means for moving the dog into the path of the projection.
12. A stop mechanism comprising a shaft, a member rotatable thereon having a projection, a clutch for effecting connection between the member and shaft, a pivoted shifter arm for disconnecting the clutch, an actuating member for moving the shifter, a dog pivotally mounted on the actuating member for operating the same, and means for moving said dog into the path of the projection.
13. A stop mechanism comprising a shaft, a member rotatable thereon and carrying a projection, a clutch for effecting connection between said parts, a shifter pivoted be tween its ends and having one end cooperab ing with the clutch, a member mounted to turn about an axis parallel with the shaft and having a cam surface on one side thereof concentric with the turning axis of the member and cooperating with the shifter, a brace having a roller bearing on the opposite side of the cam member, a dog pivoted to the cam member and movable upwardly into the path of the projection, a lever supporting said dog and movable to carry the dog into the path of the projection, and means for movmg said lever.
14. A stop mechanism comprising a shifter, a rotary member having a projection thereon and moving with the machine to be stopped, a swing member for moving the shifter pivoted on an axis independent of and parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotary member, and a dog pivotally mounted on the swing member, said dog being movable into the path of the projection on the rotary member and adapted to be operated by it to rotate the swing member into a position to actuate the shifter.
