STOP MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. Coornn, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
The present invention relates to mechanisms for automatically stopping machinery whenever an abnormal condition exists therein, as for instance when an operatives fingers are moving toward the intake of a mangle or similar machine, and an object of the invention is to provide a construction adapted to be operated from the machine to be stopped and having a change-speed driving mechanism with provision for ellccting the stoppage of the machine from any speed of the driving mechanism.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a mangle to which the invention has been applied: Fig. 2 is a plan view of portions of the stop mechanism, with portions of the mangle to which it is attached; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail View of the stop mechanism, showing the casing cover or closure removed to expose interior parts, which are in the positions which they assume immediately prior to the stoppage of the machine; Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the parts in the position which they assume when the change-speed driving mechanism is in step position; and Fig. 5 's a section on the line aa of Fig. 4:.
In this invention a change-speed driving mechanism has means movable from the different speed positions to a stop position under the action of the driving power of the machine to be stopped, so that it is possible to secure a positive action in stopping the machine, thus dispensing with weights, springs or equivalent means which are liable to be held against operation. driving mechanism has two bolts 1 and l driven at different speeds, adapted to be moved from a stop position in which both cooperate with two loose pulleys 2 and 3 to a position in which one cooperates with the driven pulley l, connected to the drive shaft X of the machine A while the other cooperates with its respective loose pulley. While in this instance the movable means of the change-speed driving mechanism is in the form of two belts it is apparent that any other part or parts of the driving mechanism may be moved from the different speed positions to a stop position.
The operating element for the movable means of the change-speed driving-mechanism is, in this instance, in the form of a shifter 5 cooperating with the opposite sides of the belts and adapted to carry the same to any of the different positions. This shifter is preferably controlled by a movable or driving member 6 mounted within a casing 8 to turn about an axis 7 and having an arm 9 extended upwardly through an opening 10 in the top of the casing and pivotally connected at 11 to one end of the pull bar 12, the other end of the pull bar being connected to an arm 13 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 14: to an arm 15 extended outwardly from the casing 8. The other arm 16 of the bell crank lever is slotted at 17 and cooperates with a pin 18 formed on the shifter 5, the latter being guided in the direction of the axis of the pulleys 2, 3 and 4; on a rod 18.
The movable or oscillatory member 6 is moved by parts moving with the machine to be stopped and to this end there is employed preferably a mechanism comprising an endless chain 15) passing about a sprocket 20 on one of the shafts of the mangle A and about two sprockets 21 and 22 turning about axes 23 and 24, respectively, parallel with each other and to the axis 7 of the oscillatory member (3. These sprockets are in this instance arranged within the casing 8 below the oscillatory member 6 and carry respectively rotary members 25 and 26. An idler sprocket 100 may be guided on the casing 8 to cooperate with the chain 19 to take up any slack in the latter. \Vith the object in view of establishing connection between the rotary members 25 and 26 and the oscillatory member (5, the members 25 and 26 are provided with radial projections 27 which are adapted to be engaged by shoulders 28' gravity or depend out of the path of the projections 27 on the rotary members 25 and 26. If however, the shifter 5 now be moved to carry the belt 1 to the driven pulley 2 then the dog 30 will be lowered so that it may be moved into the path of the projections on the member 26, but if the shifter 5 be moved to carry the belt 1 to the pulley 3, the dog 29 will be lowered and the dog 30 elevated so that the dogs will assume positions corresponding to the position of the shifter. It is preferred to provide some means which will positively prevent the movement of the inactive or elevated dog into the path of the projections 27 on its rotary member and to this end stops 33 depend from the top of the casing 8 and are adapted to be engaged by projections 34; on
the dogs 29 and 30 when the latter are in raised or inactive positions.
For the purpose of causing the dogs to move into the path of the projections there may be provided two operators 335 and 36' I pivoted respectively at 37 and 38 and connected for simultaneous movement by a link 39. These operators may engage the projections 34 on the dogs 29 and 30 so that both of said dogs will be moved in the same direction toward the rotary members 25 and 26 whenever the operators are moved; Of course, only the active dog will be moved into the path of one of the rotary members as the other dog will be out of the path of the projections and will cooperate with one of the stops 33. The projections 34 are preferably extended laterally from curved extensions 3e on the dogs, permitting the latter to be engaged below their shoulders by V the stops 33. The engaging faces of the o pcraters are of course formed to effect the several movements of the dogs in the different positions of the latter.
When the stop mechanism is connected to a mangle, it is preferred to control the opver 50 arranged within the casing 8 and connected by a link 51 to an arm 52 on the operator 35. The stop mechanism casing 8 is preferably secured to one side of the mangle A and has a closure 8 adapted to be opened to expose the operating parts of the stop mechanism. I
When the machine is not in operation the parts of the stop mechanism lie in the positions illustrated in Fig. 4:. If, now, theshifter 5 be moved by any suitable means to carry the belt 1 to the pulley 4, the parts will assume the position shown in Fig. 3, eX- cept that the operators 35 and 36 will not be shifted andthe dogs will depend vertically instead of being swung as illustrated. VJhen the operative engages the finger board 40 with sufiicient force, the connection between the finger board and the operators 35 and 36 will be moved to carry the operators to the position shown in Fig. 3, thus also moving the dogs 29 and 30 to the illustrated positions. As the members 25 and 26move with the machine, a projection 27 on the member 25 will engage theshoulder 28 on the dog 29 and the member 6 will be caused to turn about its axis 7, thus causing the shifter 5 to move the belt 1 from the pulley 4: to the pulley 3 and breaking connection put of the machine may be varied to suit,

I claim as my invention.
1. The combination with a plurality of driving members, and a driven member, of a shifter for moving the driving members simultaneously and breaking connection between any one of said driving members and the driven member, mechanism movable with the machine to be stopped, a separate independently movable device for each driving member for effecting the connection of the shifter with said mechanisnnjand means for causing one of saiddevices to connect with the mechanism to operate the shifter.

5. The combination with a change-speed driving mechanism having means movable to a stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for said means, a swing member connected to the shifter to operate the same, a pair of dogs pivoted to the swing member on opposite sides of the axis of the latter, mechanism moving with the machine to be stopped comprising two rotary members provided with projections, and means for causing one of said dogs to be engaged by one of the rotary members to operate the shifter.
6. The combination with a change-speed driving mechanism having means movable to stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for said means, a member connected to the shifter to operate the same, mechanism moving with the machine to be stopped, separate and independently movable devices for connecting said mechanism with the shifter moving member to move the shifter, and a single controlling means for said devices.
7 The combination with a change-speed driving mechanism having means movable to a stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for moving said means, a swing member for moving the shifter, dogs carried by the swinging member and independently movable thereon, a pair of rotary members having projections thereon and moving with the machine to be stopped, and a single controlling means for said dogs for causing one of them to be en gaged by a projection on one of the rotary members.
8. The combination with a change-speed driving mechanism having means movable to stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for moving said means, a swing member having connection with the shifter, pendant dogs pivotally connected to the swing member on opposite sides of the turning axis of said swing member, a pair of rotary members having projections thereon and moving with the machine tohe stopped, and a single controlling means for said dogs for causing one of them to be engaged by a projection on one of the rotary members.
9. The combination with a change-speed driving mechanism having means movable to a stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for moving said means, a swing member for moving the shifter, a pair of rotary members, means for rotating said members with the machine to be driven, and separate independently movable devices for establishing driving connection between the swing member and the rotary members.
10. The combination with a change-speed driving mechanism having means movable to a stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for moving said means, a movable member having connection with the shifter, pendant dogs pivoted to the shifter moving member on opposite sides of the axis of turning of said member, a pair of rotary members having projections thereon and each arranged to one side of one of the pendant dogs, means for driving said rotary members with the machine to be stopped, and a single controlling means for causing one of the dogs to engage one of the projections on one of the rotary members.
11. The combination with a change speed driving mechanism having means movable to a stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for moving said means, a pair of rotary members having projections thereon and movable with the machine to be stopped, a swing member having two independently movable dogs thereon arranged on opposite sides of the axis of the swing member, connection between the shifter and the swing member which moves the latter to position the dogs when the shifter is shifted, and means for moving one of the dogs into the path of the projection on one of the rotary members.
12. The combination with a change speed driving meclmnisln having means movable to stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for said means, a pair of rotary members having projections thereon and movable with the machine to be stopped, a swing member, pendant dogs carried by the swing member on opposite sides of the axis of the latter, a connection between the shifter and the swing member for moving one of the dogs to an operative position and the other to an inoperative position with reference to the rotary llltll'lbGIS, means for moving the dogs toward the rotary members, and devices for cooperation with the dogs when they are in inoperative positions to limit their movements toward the rotary members.
13. The combination with a change-speed driving mechanism having means movable to a stop position from the different speed positions, of a shifter for said means, a movable member, a pair of dogs carried by said movable member and independently movable thereon, mechanism moving with the machine to be stopped having projections adapted to cooperate with the dogs, a connection between the shifter and the movable 1 member for moving one dog to an operative position with reference to said mechanism and the other dog to an inoperative position, and means acting on the operatively' positioned dog to cause the latter to be engaged by one of the projections.
14. The combination with a shifter for a change-speed driving mechanism and mechanism moving with the machine I to be stopped, of mechanism for moving the anism moving with the machine to be stopped, of a swing member for moving the shifter from different speed positions tora stop position, a plurality of independently movable dogs carried by the swing member, one for each speed position, and means for -moving one of said dogs into connection with said mechanism to cause the shifter to be moved to stop position.
