AUTOMATIC BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HILDEBRAND, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Boilers, of which the following is a spccification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in automatic boilers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device whereby the gas sup ply of a burner is automaticallyshut off upon the boiling of the contents of a receptacle positioned thereon.
A further object of the device is the provision of an attachment for gas burners cooperating with a boiler carried means Whereby such means is automatically shifted upon the violent boiling of the fluid within the boiler and whereby such attachment turns the inlet valve of the burner up to its closed position. p

The invention being especially serviceable in connection with gas stoves, the same is herein illustrated formed as an attachment for the stove 10 having a burner 11 illustrated therein by dotted lines, the said stove being provided with the usual gas supply pipe 12 having a valve 13 for feeding gas to the said burner, a swinging handle 14 being provided for the said valve.
The bracket 15 is provided with a clamp 16 for positioning the same upon the pipe 12, a fork 17 being carried by the said bracket for the accommodation of the inlet nipple 18 of thevalve 13. An angular trip 19 is pivoted to the bracket 15 by a bolt 20, a spring 21 being carried by the said trip and bracket for normally holding the trip in a plane parallel with the pipe 12 at a point above the valve 13 with the depending finger 22 of the said trip in contact with the valve handle 14 resiliently maintaining the same in its closed position.
A releasable detent member 23 is pivoted as at 24 to the bracket 15 having a depending beveled foot 25 adapted to receive the ear 26 of the trip 19 therebehind for maintaining the trip in its set position with the spring 21 under tension and with the finger 22 at a distance from the valve handle 14 as best illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A spring 27 connects the bracket 15 with the detent member 23 tending to normally maintain the foot 25 thereof within the path of movement of the ear 26 of the said trip.
The stove attachment already described operates to maintain the trip in its set position engaged by the detent member 23, it being understood that when the upper crosspiece 28 of the said detent member is moved away from the stove, the foot 25 thereof will be released allowing the spring 21 to swing the trip 19 with the finger 22 passing through an arcuate path and engaging the handle l4c'for swinging the same to its closed position as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
A cooperating attachment is provided for a boiler 29 adapted for operatively shifting the releasable detent member 23 while said boiler is operatively positioned over the opening 30 of the stove 10 beneath which opening the burner 11 is positioned. Ahollow float 31 is arranged upon the fluid 32 within the boiler 29, a post 33 being mounted upon the float. A catch member 34 is pivotally mounted to a lug 35 carried by the handle 36 of the boiler 29, said catch member having a hook 37 extending through a slot 38 in the said handle while the lever portion 39 of the catch member is adjustably pivoted to the post 33 by means of a pin 40 carried by the free end of the said lever member 'belng enlarged in the form of a block 46 and having a path of movement ,interseeting the plane of the cross member 28 of the releasable detent member 23.
' With the boiler 29 arranged over the burner 11 upon the stove 10, the gas beingturned on and lighted, the handle 1 f will extend outwardly as herein illustrated and the releasing weight member 44: will be adjusted beneath the handle 36 having a projecting lip 47 carried by the block 46 en gaged by the hook 37, the float 31 being freely positioned upon the fluid 32. When a su'fiiciently high point has been attained by the liquid when boiling in the container, the float 31 will have been elevated to the desired point to cause the operation of the releasing device by the adjustable connection between the post 33 and the arm 39.
The elevating of the fluid 32 shifts the catch member 34, releasing the hook 37 from the releasing member l i whereby the weight 46 swings downwardly striking the detent member -23 for allowing the trip 19 to force the valve handle 14: to close the valve 13, thereby shutting off the supply of gas from the burner 11. a boiler, a handle upon the said boiler, a releasing member pivoted to the said handle having a path of movement intersecting the plane of the said detent member, a supporting catch member for the said releasing member, a float within the said boiler, and adjustable connections between the said float and catch member;
