Be it known that I, EnNnsT J. CoLoURN, a citizen ot the United States, and a i'esident of the city of Shelbina, in the county of Shelby and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Restraining' Devices, of which the following is a speciiication. Y

My invention relates to restraining' 'devices and more particularly to that class known as hopples.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a hopple particularly adapted to cows, but may be applied to other four-footed animals.

A second object of this invention is to provide a liopple that will eliectively and securely prevent the animal from kicking'.

Another important object of my invention is to construct a hopple consisting' of a onepiece harness and a shackle arrangement carried thereby that may be quickly applied to the animal.

Another object of the invention is to provide a one-piece harness adapted to be applied to an animal and a shackle arrangement carried thereby that may be adjusted for animals of different heights.

A further object of my invention is to provide an appliance of the above mentioned character which consists of few parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and which may be placed on the market at a comparatively low cost.

The above and other objects and advantages of my improvements will fully appear from the following' description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and be explicitly defined in the appended claims.

circling strap or band also having alined openings 13 at both ends.

Secured to the body strap 12, as at 1li, is a strap 15 which extends at right angles thereto and carries a buckle 16 or other connecting device. Secured to the body strap 10, as at 17, is a strap 18 having openings adapted for engagement with the buckle 1G. These straps 15 and 1S make up what I term the back strap.

19 and 2O indicate short connecting straps having' buckles or other connecting devices 21 and 22 secured to their upper ends. These buckles are adapted for engagement with the body straps l0 and 12.

The lower ends of the st 'aps 19 and 2() are provided with loops 23 and 2li. Loops and 26 are also arranged upon the members 19 and 20 to receive the free ends of the body straps 10 and 12.

Loosely engaged in the loops 23 and 21 are the rings 27. Also loosely engaged with the ring 27 are the diverg'ing connections or straps 29 and 30. Relatively large rings and 34, 35 and 36 are loosely engaged with the lower ends of the members' 29 and 30. Horizontally disposed straps 37 and 38 ar loosely connected with the rings 33 and 31, 35 and 36. lVhle 1 have described the diverging members and the horizontal. members as straps, they may be chains or other flexible elements.

Engaged in the rings 33 and 3&1, 35 and 3G are chains or other flexible elements 39 and 40. These chains 10 carrv snap hooks 41 and -12 upon their ends adapted to engage one oi the links of the chains 39. A snap hook L13 is carried by the ring 36. It will be noted that should it be desired to adjust the chains 39 and 40 carried by the rings 35 and 36, to the limbs ot a smaller or large animal without disengaging' the chains, the snap hook 43 is simply engaged in any one of the links of these chains.

The elements carried by these straps 19 and 2O make up the shackle or locking device for the animals limbs.

Should it be desired to adjust the shackle or locking' device vertically for animals of diil'ering heights, the buckles 21 and 22 are disengaged from the ends of the members 10 and 12 and adjusted 'up er down as the case may be.

In applyingl my hopple to the animal, the forward body strap 10 is placed upon the animals back just in front of its hips and the rear body strap 12 is also placed upon the animals back and in alinement with its limbs. The snap hooks Lll and 42 are now engaged with the chains 39.

In Fig'. 2, a. slightly modified form oi the invention is shown. In this form, only one body strap or band and only 011e short buckle carrying' strap for each set of diverging` straps 29 and 80 is employed.

This hopple is applied in the same manner as the first mentioned hopple, the body strap being placed in front of the animals hips and the flexible elements beingthen engaged around the animals limbs.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying d 'awings, the advantages of the construction and the manner oi' application will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the method of application, together with the forms which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the forms shown are only illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I believe to be new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

l. In a hopple, a harness adapted to be applied and mounted on. the rear limbs of an animal, a plurality of diverging members connected to the lower ends thereof, and a chain joining` and closely connecting the diverging members whereby the animal is prevented from moving either oi' its rear limbs.

2. In a hopple, a harness comprising` front and rear body straps, said harness adapted to be applied and mounted on the rear limbs of an animal, a plurality of diverging members connected to the lower ends lue-reef, and a chain joining and closely connecting' the diver-ging' members to encircle the rear limbs of an animal to prevent one limb being moved independently of the other.

3. In a hopple, a harness comprising forward and rear body` straps, said harness adapted to be applied and mounted on the rear limbs of an animal, a short strap adj ustably connected with each end of each oi the body straps, a shackle mechanism carried by the last named straps to encircle the rear limbs of an animal whereby one limb is preventedV from moving independently oi' the other. y
