J A. GRANT.
COMBINED HALTER AND HITGHING STRAP.
Patented Oct. 4,1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
JOHN A. GRANT, OF BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To JAMES w. PAGE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED HALTER AND HlTCHlNG-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,137, dated October 4,1887.
Application filed July 24, 1886. Serial No. 208,922. (No m0del.l
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. GRANT, of Bus ton, in the countyof Suffolk and State ofM-as saehusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Halters and Hitching-Straps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specifitiOn.
This invention is an improved article of manufacture-viz., a combined halter, double hitching-strap,and continuouslead line or rein, all formed from four straps united by three rings and provided with two snap-hooks, as shown and described. These straps are preferably leather or webbing, but rope or other material may be employed.
The drawings represent the dilferent forms in which these parts are combined and arranged to constitute the three different articles specified,Figure 1 showing them extended as a simple strap or lead-line; Fig. 2 representing the halter formed from the same parts, and Fig. 3 illustrating the use of the device as a double hitching-strap.
A, B, G, and D are the four straps or sections of the article, A representing the uppermost one, constituting the headstall of the halter, Fig. 2-; B, the next in order, forming the nose-strap thereof; and O,the next, being the jawstrap of the halter, and preferably made double, as shown, for flexibility and strength. D is the lower end section or tie-strap, under any of the conditions of use. The four straps AB C D are connected, end to end, in a con tinuous line,by the three rings EF G, the ring E uniting A to B, the ring F uniting B to C, while the doubled strap (J is passed directly through the ringG to engage at its end the loop of a snap-hook, I, which cannotbe withdrawn through the ring G, secured on the inner end of strap D. Thus the four straps become four sections of one continuous line, as shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to so use the article.
. At such times, to keep the snap-hook I in proper place, I engage its hook with a small ring or loop,J,scoured to one side of the strap D,near its inner-end. This ring J, though very convenient, is supplementary merely, and is not required for strength nor essential to connection of the four sections. It is not employed when the article is used as. a halter or as a double hitching-strap, as in Figs. 2 and 8.
Two snap-hooksI-I and I, are essential to my completed article, the hook H being secured by its loop to the outer or free end of the strap A, while the end of the strap 0, after passing through the ring G, is secured by the loop of thesnap-hook I, said loop being too large to be drawn through said ring, as already stated.
In forming a halter I engage the hook H in the ring F and the hook I in the ring E, (see Fig.2) while for the double hitching-strap of Fig. 3 the hook H enters the ring E and the hook I engages the ring of the bridle-bit. I sometimes substitute an equivalent strap and buckle in place of the snap-hooks shown.
I am aware ofthe Patent No. 153,9ll,granted to P. Reed, August 11,1874, for fhalter, made up of eight straps, five rings, five snap'hooks, and two buckles, the cheek pieces and nose band being detached wholly from the other parts to make of the remaining parts a hitchat each end and a series of loops secured to it at intervals, with which either hook might engage. The device is not convertible into any other article. I disclaim the things shown in both these patents as foreign to my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. The eombination,in a halter-,of the straps A B O D, rings E F G, and snap hooks H I, arranged as described and shown, whereby without dismemberment the article is convertible into a double hitchingstrap or coir tinuous lead-line, substantially asset forth.
2. The lead -line described, formed of the sections A B G D and provided with the rings E F G, snap-hooks H I, and supplementary ring J, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 14th day of July, A. D. 1886.
, JOHN A. GRANT.
