To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, RANsoM Y. Bovnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Hangers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in garment hangers and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved simple, durable, light and collapsible device of this character which may be readily collapsed or folded for packing and transporting the same and as readily unfolded when desired for use.

A further object is to provide an improved foldable or collapsible device of this character, adapted to be adjusted to accommodate garments of different sizes.

' To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the, invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the ac companying drawing illustrating the invention, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an improved device of this character, constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention'and showing the same extended for use.

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the sections partially folded to accommodate the hanger for a smaller garment.

Fig. 3 is a view showing the hanger collapsed.

Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the pivot end of one of the arm sections.

Referring more particularly to the draw form a stop which abuts a portion of the support 10 for holding the sections 11 in proper position to receive a garment, and the pivots 12'protrude slightly beyond the outer surface of the sections.

A second section 14, similar to the section 11, is pivotally connected as at 15 to the outer extremity of each of the sections 11 and the pivots 15 also protrude beyond the lateralfaces of the sections. Each of the sections 14 is provided with an offset or deflected portion 16 adjacent the pivot and each portion 16 is adapted to abut a shoulder 17 on the section 11 to limit the unfolding movement of the section 14 with respect to the section 11. The outer extremity of the section 14 is provided with a recess 18, and the sections 11, 14 are preferably of a uniform length.

Obviously any number of sections 11 and 14 may be pivoted together.

The sections 14 are adapted to be folded about the pivots 15 and with respect to the sections 11 so as to reduce the length of the arms formed by these sections, and to accommodate the hanger to garments of different sizes.

In order to hold the sections 14 folded with respect to the sections 11, the recess 18 is provided in the section 14, and when the section 14 is folded in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the recess 18 will be in a position to receive the head of the pivot 12 and the natural spring of the material will cause the pivot head to be seated in the recess 18 and to maintain the same therein until the sections are unfolded.

When not in use and in order to collapse the hanger into a small space, for packing or transporting the same, the sections 14 are first folded upon the sections 11, and the sections 11 are then folded with respect to the support 10 and about the pivots 12. Then thus folded the heads of the pivots 15 will enter suitable recesses 19 in the support 10 to hold the parts in this folded position.

A clamp or clip 20 is also provided for supporting an additional garment and this clamp or clip is of the ordinary and well known type, preferably comprising a jaw controlled by a spring 21, the lower edge or portion of the support 10 beyond the pivots 12 being shaped to form one of the jaws of the clamp, so that the clamp will be disposed below the sections 11, and when the latter are folded as shown in Fig. 3, the support may be hung up and the clamp used Without using the sections 11, 14.

With this improved construction it will be manifest that the same may be readily collapsed and packed within a small space and when it is desired to suspend smaller garments, the arms need only be partially unfolded.

While the preferred form of construction has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of this invention.

hat is claimed as new is:

A garment hanger embodying a body portion, one end of which is shaped to form one jaw of a clamp, a cooperating jaw pivotally connected with the body, arm sections pivotally connected to the body adjacent the clamp, the pivots of the arms projecting laterally beyond the face of the arms and the body, a second arm section pivotally connected with the extremities of the first recited arm section, the outer arm sections having recesses adjacent their extremities and adapted to receive the pivots of the first recited arm section when the sections are folded with respect to each other, stops for limiting the unfolding movement of the arm sections, the pivots between the arm sections projecting laterally beyond the faces of the arms, there being recesses in the bodyfor receiving the projecting portions of the last recited pivots when the arm sections are all folded with respect to the body, for yieldingly securing the parts in folded relation, and means whereby the body may be suspended.
