  • This invention relates to finger guards, and has for its primary object to provide means where an infected, bruised, lacerated, crushed, or amputated finger or toe at its distal extremity or location adjacent thereto may be protected from external forces, blows, shock, or any additional injury, while in the act, more especially of handling tools, firearms, or similar agents, thereby in an eflicient, non-sensitive, painless, manner, and thus permitting any person so afflicted as described to resume his particular vocation during any healingprocess of the character described.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM JOHN MAN- NING, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to finger guards, and has for its primary object to provide means where an infected, bruised, lacerated, crushed, or amputated finger or toe at its distal extremity or location adjacent thereto may be protected from external forces, blows, shock, or any additional injury, while in the act, more especially of handling tools, firearms, or similar agents, thereby in an eflicient, non-sensitive, painless, manner, and thus permitting any person so afflicted as described to resume his particular vocation during any healingprocess of the character described. I
A further object of my invention is the intent to provide a finger guard of such construction that can be or is bent, adapted or contoured in such a manner that the natural spring or resiliency of the material used if necessary to so utilize, would cause the device to cling to the member to which applied, though this method may be augmented by any common tying procedure, means, or method, including the use of adhesive plaster for this purpose.
A further object of my invention is toprovide a finger guard of such shape that a surgical dressing or bandage may be applied around or about any recently received, existing or specific injury, and over the member thus dressed if it is so indicated, the guard may be placed until such time as the wound has healed to a degree that will permit the device to be applied to the sur face of the finger or toe in a direct manner, or in which the order of the above described procedure may be reversed, and the dressing, cotton, or bandage applied over, within, and about the guard, including the finger apex or other locative point, in order at this particular stage of the healing process to receive any discharge or drainage from the wound should this condition exist, and which may be cited in addition to permitting the application of any medicinal or cleansing agent to the wound through the openings of guard, or by the removal of the device, while in still further and additional manner atmospheric filtered air may continue at all times to circulate through the framework of the guard or the meshes of the external bandage should one be applied.
My invention has still further for an object to provide an internal or external framework of approximately the form or forms described or to be described in these specifications whereby the common finger cot, stall, or covering capable of being ap plied over any finger may be stiffened, and in addition to the said covering principle of such agent in a novel manner made to impart the added virtue of protection fro-m outward blows or sense of external contact, substantially as described elsewhere in these specifications.
My invention still further embraces the arrangements and combinations of parts to be more fully described in the subject matter that follows, and which are shown and exemplified in the drawings making up a part of the specifications and in the claims that are appended.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings My invention consists of two or more strips of pliable metal or wire, or other suitable material that are twisted as shown at a and can be, if necessary, further strengthened at this point by uniting the metallic surfaces with solder or by welding upon their approximate medial centers in such a manner that four or more extensions or a plurality of arms 6 result, and upon these being bent upon or contoured to the finger extend downward toward their free distal ends 0 upon the respective anterior and posterior aspects of the member, thus inclosing and adapting or being made to adapt itself to any sized finger or toe in a universal manner, being secured at the distal ends to any given member by any common tying procedure, lacing method or adhesive strips may be utilized for this purpose.
My invention still further consists in combining such described device within or upon any aspect of a stall, cot, or finger covering e as a protective frame work, in addition to which the finger cot or covering material itself may be stiffened or strengthened at any aspect in order to more effectually guard the wounded or injured mem-- her from any external jar or violence, blows, or other outward forces should itv be desired to Wear such described covering or cot with or without such combinations.
I claim:
l. A finger guard consisting of a plurality of strips of pliable metal, wire or other suitable material twisted about each other upon their approximate medial centers in such a manner, that a plurality of exvrality of strips of pliable metal, wire or other suitable material, twisted about each other upon their approximate medial centers in such a manner that a plurality of extensions result, which upon being bent or contoured to the finger extend in a substantially parallel relation in combination with a finger cot or stall for the protection of the finger, or member, in a manner described.
3. A finger guard consisting of a plurality of strips of pliable metal, wire or other suitable material, twisted about each other upon their approximate medial centers in such a manner that a plurality of extensions result, which upon being bent or contoured to the finger extend in a substantially parallel relation in combination With a finger covering, cot or stall, that in itself may be reinforced, stiffened: and rendered non-pliable on its variousaspects for added protection to a member.
' 4. A finger guard consisting of a plurality of strips of pliable metal, wire, or other suitable material, twisted, strengthened by solder, or by Welding at their approximate medial centers in such a manner that a plurality of extensions result, which upon being bent or contoured to the finger extend in a substantially parallel relation upon a member, or in combination with a finger covering, cot or stall, as described.
