Description
No. 896,674. PATENTED AUG. 18, 1908.

SURGICAL SPLINT.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.19,1908.
w mfi w hum,
OHAUNOEY A. WALKER, OF LOUISVILLE, OHIO.
SURGICAL SPLINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 19, 1908.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Serial No. 421,975.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAUNGEY A. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Splints; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the splint properly located but not bandaged to the broken arm. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the splint. Fig. 3 is a view showing the hand hold broken away.
The present invention has relation to surgeons splint, especially designed for use to fractures at a point between the hand and elbow and which consists in the novel ar ran ement hereinafter described and particu larly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 111g.
In the accompanying drawing 1 represents the splint proper, which is curved transverse to its length and its front or forward end curved at an angle to the length of the splint proper and is so curved for the purpose of providing a support or contact surface for. the palm of the hand or wrist as best illustrated in ig. 1. The forward end of the splint is provided with the roll 2, which roll is for the purpose of forming what might be termed a handhold and upon which roll the fingers and thumb are placed substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1, by which arrangement the fingers and thumb are held by suitable bandages in such positions that they cannot be moved thereby leaving the cords and muscles at rest for the desired length of time after a fracture has taken place. After the fracture has healed sufficiently to allow movement of the fingers and thumb they may be released. In order to provide means for removing the roll prior to the time the splint proper can be removed, the splint is partially cut away by forming grooves 3 upon one or both sides of the splint proper, by which arrangement the roll end or portion of the splint can be easily removed by cutting or breaking the narrowed portion 4 from the body of the splint.
It will be understood that by cutting or breaking away the roll and a portion of the splint forward of the groove or grooves 3 the hand is free to be used during the time the fracture is healing, after the fracture has partially healed or the broken bone become set.
It will be understood that the splint should be formed of light material suitable for the purpose designed, but of such material that the injured armwill be held in a rigid condition.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, I
a'splint for surgical use, consisting of a body portion curved transversely to its length and laterally, and a hand-hold roll secured to the laterally curved portion, substantially'as and for the purpose specified.
2. Asurgeons splint curved as described and provided with a hand roll and a weakened portion located near the hand roll, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that. I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
OHAUNOEY A. WALKER.
