Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,291, datedJanuary 23, 1855.

Be it known that I, LEWIS HOVER, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and -Improved Mode of Securing Lamps in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, vand eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of t-his specification, in which- Figure 1, is a view of a lantern, with the lower part bisected vertically in order to show my improvement. Fig. 2, is a top view or plan of the lamp att-ached to the base, the base being detached from the other portion of the lantern.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved mode of securing lamps in lanterns, and consists in the peculiar manner of securing the base to the lower part of the other portion of the lantern.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A Figs. 1v and 2 represents the lamp of the lantern which is constructed separately or detached from the base B. The lamp is of the usual form and shape and has a bar (a) attached to its bottom the ends of which project a short dist-ance beyond the sides of the lamp, the bar (a) being attached to the center of the bottom of the-lamp.
The base B is of the usual form and has two spring loops or ears (b) secured tov its upper surface at opposite points, bot-h loops or ears are seen in Fig. 2.
The lamp A is secured to the base B, by turning the lamp so that the ends of the will pass underneath the loops or ears (b) (b). The lamp is represented secured to the base in both figures.
The base B has a rim C around its upper edge, within which a rim D on the lower part of the glass E of the lantern its, see Fig. 1. The lower edge of the rim D has a short inward projection (c) around it which when the base is secured to the lantern is at a point about the center of the height of the rim C.
On the upper part of the base B, there are two curved wires (d) (ai) the outer ends of which are connected and pass through the side of the rim C and having a button F attached to'them. The two wires thus connected form a semicircular spring and bear against the inner surface 'of the rim C. The inner ends of the wires (d) (d) are bent upward and have small hooks (e) k(e) on their ends which hooks catch over the projection (c) on the lower edge of the rim D, see Fig. 2 and dotted lines in Fig. 1, the projection (0) being represented in blue in On the upper part of the base B and at the inner ends of the wires (al) (d) there are curved ledges (f) (f) projecting inward, see Fig. 2, there being one ledge atv the end of each wire.
The base B it will be seen is secured to the lantern or to the rim D by the hooks (e) (e) which are kept over the projection (c) by the springs (d) (el) and in order t0 detach the base from the lantern, the thumb is pressed upon the button F and the inner ends of the springs are forced inward toward the center of the base B by the oblique position of the ledges (f) (f) against which they move or slide, and the hooks (c) (e) are consequently thrown off the projection (c) and the lamp A may then be withdrawn from the lantern.

The above invention is extremely simple and economical to manufacture, it is not liable to get out of repair and as the lamp may be readily detached from the base theV several parts may be perfectly cleaned without difficulty.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim- The arrangement of the springs (CZ) (d) hooks (e) (e) and ledges (f) (f) operated in the manner described, as a fastening to secure the base B, of the lantern to the other portion of the same.
