Be it known that we, FRANK E. VVoonL and EDWARD A. JoiINsoN, both citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of VVhitestone, Long Island, in the: State of New York, and the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chips and Chip Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in chips and chip holders.

One of the objects of this invention is to produce a holder for stacked chips in which such stacked chips will be readily and easily accessible and from which such chips will be readily and easily removable, and which holder may be readily, easily and safely carried about with the chips stacked the-rein without danger of scattering the same.

Another object of our invention is the pro duction of a holder in which the stacked chips may be releasably locked and preferably will be so rcleasably locked in position within the holder by the relative turning of a carrying handle and a cover plate which is preferably slotted and has locking con nection with a handle-ring on a. post having a swivel connection with the holder to perinit rotation thereof above the slot-ted plate to lock the same to the holder.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combinedas to co-act and cooperate with each other in the performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results here in contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species or preferred form illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section of'the holder substantially on the line 11 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 3 is a view of the top of the holder showing the cover plate partly removed;

Fig. 4 is a section of a modified form of holder substantially on the line ll of Fig. 5;

Referring now to these drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of our invention, 1 indicates a base member, which, as shown in said figures, comprises a cylindrical block of wood into which is driven a plurality, and preferably four, vertically-disposed stacking-posts 2 preferably of substantially equal length to provide a. cover-seat as hereinafter explained and positioned, as shown, between the center and edge of the said base member. Each of these posts 2 is adapted to receive a stack of chips 3, each of which chips is provided with a central or axial hole 3" through which the stacking-post extends. The base and stacking-posts may, therefore, be termed the body of the chip holder and said body is preferably provided with means to permit the ready carrying of the same by the users, and as illustrated in *igs. 1, 2 and 3, a carrying handle 4 is provided which is in the form of a ring attached toa vertical post 5 disposed centrally of said stacking-posts and base.

In the said preferred embodiment shown in said Figures 1 to 3, we preferably provide a cover-plate 6 having a slot 7 shaped to permit the carrying ring 4 and the upper part of the post 5 to be moved therethrough so as to permit the superimposition of the cover plate upon the tops of the posts 2 which, when of the same length as hereinabove specified, provide a level seat therefor. This cover-plate 6 is when on said seat so positioned in relation to thebottom of the ring 3 that a relative turning of the carr ing ring and slotted cover-plate 6 will cause a locking of the plate on its seat. As illus tening thereto, by any suitable means a disc 10 of cloth or the like.

Obviously, when the slotted plate is fitted over the carrying ring- 4: on its seat the carrying ring and post may be turned on the swivel connection with the base to cause the ring to assume a locking position at an angle, and prefeably at a right angle to the slot 7. The cover plate will thus be securely locked on the seat formed therefor by the tops of the posts and the stacked chips will, of course, be locked in the holder on the said stacking posts.

In 4 and 5 we have shown av modified form of our invention in which, instead of the wooden base 1, we have provided a metallic base 11 having a central aperture 11" to permit the insertion of a carrying post 12 and this base is also provided with apertures 11 adapted to permit the insertion of stacking posts 13. As illustrated, said holder is provided below the base 11 with a series of feet 14 and, as illustrated, two of such feet 1 1 and two of the posts 18 are formed from a single piece of wire, one of the posts being formed at each end of the wire and two-of the feet 14 together with a fastening portion 15being bent up from an intermediate portion of the wire. As illustrated, the central post 12 and the fastening portions of the posts 13 are connected to the base by a single bolt 16 which. is provided, at its inner end with a head 16 and at its outer end with a nut 16. As illustrated, the post 12 is bent at its lower end to provide a ring and the head of the bolt 15 abuts against this ring 12*, while a lit) washer 17 abuts against the said fastening portions 15 so that the screwing up of the nut enables the locking together of the carrying post- 12 and the integrally formed posts 13and foot and fastening portions 14 and 15.

In Fig. 6 we have shown another modilied form of our invention in which, instead of the centrally-disposed carrying posts of the constructions hereinabove described, we have provided a bail handle 18. Opposite ends 18 -18 are driven into a wooden base 19. This construction has posts 20 in all respects similar to those shown in Fig. 1 and stacks 3 of chips are mounted on the posts 20 in. the same manner as the stacked chips shown in Fig. 1.

The operation of all of these devices will be obvious from the foregoing description.

Having described our invention, we claim 1. A chip holder embodying a holder body comprising a base member of disc form and a plurality of stacking posts of similar length symmetrically disposed about the central vertical axis, a centrally disposed carrying handle connected to said holder body, a cover plate adapted to seat on the top of said posts and said handle and cover plate being relatively formed and positioned to provide for clamping engagement therebetween, whereby the cover plate is locked in position.

2. A chip-holder embodying aholderbody comprising a base member and a plurality of stackingposts of similar length; a carrying handle connected to said holderbody; a cover plate adapted to seat on the top of said posts; and means connected with the handle for locking said plate on its said seat.

3. A chip-holder embodying a holderbody comprising a base member and a plurality of stacking-posts of similar length; a rover plate adapted to seat on the top of said stacking-posts and a carrying handle having a locking engagement with said cover plate.

A chip holder embodying a holder body comprising a base member and a plurality of stacking posts of similar length, a carrying handle mounted upon a centrally disposed post, a cover plate having a slot through which said carrying handle is adapted to be inserted and formed, whereby, upon relative turning of the plate and handle, the former will belocked in retaining position.

5. A chip-holder embodying a holderbody comprising a base member and a plurality of stacking-posts of similar length to provide a cover seat; a cover plate having a locking slot, a carrying handle mounted upon a centrally disposed post and adapted to be inserted through said slot, and a swivel connection between said handle and holder-body whereby a turning of the handle will cause the plate to be locked on its seat.

6. A chip-holder embodying a holder-body comprising a base member and a plurality of stacking-posts; said base having a plurality of supporting feet, each of said feet and a stacking post being formed from a single strand of wire extending through said base.

7. A chip-holder embodying a holderbody comprising a metallic base member and a plurality of stacking-posts; said base having a plurality of supporting feet, a plurality of said feet and a plurality of stacking-posts being formed from a single strand of wire extending through said base.

8. A chip-holder embodying a holderbody comprising a metallic base member and a plurality of pairs of posts, said base having a plurality of supporting feet, each pair of stacking-posts and a foot being formed of a single strand of wire bent intermediate its ends. and having portions extending above and below the base to provide a foot below. said base anda plurality of posts above the same, and centrally-disposed means for simultaneously fastening all the feet and posts to the base.
