GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2a, 1917.
Application mea aanuaryas, 191e. serial No. 74,246.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES C. ROGERS, acitizen of the United States, and -a resident of Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented anew and Improved Garter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved garter which is simple means at the other end of the leg band, then returning and engaging the guiding means on the endv of the leg band to which the cord is attached and to then extend downwardly to support a gripping device for engagement with the hose or stocking.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of referencefindicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the garter as applied;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the garter; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 5-45 of Fig. 4.
The leg band 10 is preferably of a nonelastic material and is provided at .one end with an adjusting buckle 11 for lengthen` ing and shortening the leg band 10 to suit the size of the calf of theleg of the wearer.:` The loop 12 at this end of the leg band 10 engages a slot 13 formed in a metallic plate 14 provided with a return bend 15 to form a housing for a pulley 16 around which passes a cord 17 attached at one end by suitable fastening devices 18 to the other end of the leg band 1() and which other end is provided with an angular terminal 19 .ex-
tending downwardly, as plainly shown in lcalf ofthe wearers leg.
F l. The cord'17 afterzl'eavin'g the pulley 16` passes4 around another .pulley 2O journaled on a plate 21 attachedby a tape 22 to the angular terminal 19, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. TheV plate 21 is provided with a. return bend 23 similar to the return bend 15 to overlie the pulley 20 and to allowl of readily passing the cord 17 over the return bend into engagement with the pulley 20. The free end of the cord 17 extends downwardly and is provided with a suitableA gripping device 24 adapted to engage the hose'or stocking 25 to be supported by the garter. It will be noticed that when the garter is in use the stocking 25 exerts a downward pull bythe gripping device 24.
on the cord 17 and as the latter passes around the pulleys 2O and 16,it'is evident that a pull is exerted on the ends of the leg band 10 to draw the lattertight around the It is understood that inl using. lthe` garter the cord 17 is passed over the pulleys 16 and 20"to close the garter around the wearers leg, and the gripping device 24 is engaged with the hose or stocking. When it is desiredy to disconnect the leg band 10,' from Ithe vwearers leg the cord 17 is slipped out of engagement with the pulley 1 6l to open the garter. From the foregoingitf will ybe seen that lany tendency ofthehose or stocking 25 to slide down on the wearers leg causes a pull on the cord 17 to draw the leg band 10 tight on .the wearersleg and consequently the garter is not liable to slip down on the leg whenever there is a downward tendency of the hose or stocking. By the arrangement described, the garter readily adjusts itself to the action of the muscles of the leg especially while the leg is in motion. The leg band 10 may be made of silk, cotton, leather or other suitsome material which `can be rendered nonabsorbent. f The pla-te 14 is preferably covered at the back with a suitable fabric material 26 to prevent the metallic plate from coming in direct contact with the skin on the wearers leg. l' In the modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the leg band 30 "is provided at one end with an adjusting buckle 31 to form a loop 32 engaged by a hook 33 adapted to be hooked on a stud or pin 34 formed on a plate 35 secured on the facev of a fabric able material, but is preferably made ofV `l material 36 by the use of stitches 37 extending through slots 38 formed in the plate 35.
n the face of the plate 35 is secured a semicircular tube 40 having flaring ends 4l and through which extends a cord 42 fastened at one end by suitable fastening devices 43 to the leg band 30 at the angular end 31 thereof. The cord 42 also passes through a segmental tube 44 formed or secured on a plate 45 attached by stitches 46 to the angular terminal 31 of the leg band 30. The free end of the cord 42 is provided with a gripping device 50 of any approved construction adapted to engage the hose or stocking 5l to be supported. It will be noticed that by this arrangement any downward tendency of the hose or stocking 51 exerts a pull on the cord 42 to draw the leg band 30 tight around the calf of the wearers leg. Vhen it is desired to open the garter the hook 33 is disengaged from the pin or stud 84, and when it is desired to close the garter the hook 33 is engaged with the stud 34. By providing the segmental tubes 40 and 44 with flaring ends the cord 42 is not liable tochafe while sliding in the said tubes.
It is understood that the pulleys 16 and 20 and the tubes 40' and 44 form guiding means for the cords 17 and 42 to slide in freely without undue friction and chafng. By locating the pulley 2O and the tube 44 on the angular terminals 19 and 3l of the leg bands 10 and 30, the two horizontal runs of the cords 17 and 42 are kept spaced apart and parallel to insure a straight horizontal pull on the ends of the leg bands 10 and 30.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A garter comprising a leg band, a flexible element permanently and fixedly se cured at one end to one end of the leg band, and a hose engaging means at the other end and tubular guides at the ends of said leg band, said guiding means slidably engaged by said flexible element.
2. A garter comprising a leg band, a cord permanently and fixedly secured at one end to one end of the leg band and provided at its other end with a hose gripping device, plates attached to the ends of said leg band, and tubular guides mounted on said plates, said tubular guides slidably engaged by the said cord.
3. A garter comprising an open leg-band consisting of a central and two end portions, one end portion having a downwardly bent terminal, a cord having one end permanently and fixedly secured to the portion carrying the bent terminal and provided at its other end with a gripping device adapted to engage the hose to be supported, and guiding means carried by both end portions, one of said guiding means mounted on the downwardly bent terminal.
4. A garter, comprising a leg band provided at one end with a hook, a cord attached to the other end of the said leg band, a plate having a stud adapted to be engaged by the said hook, a plate attached to the end of the leg band adjacent the said fixed end of the cord, guiding means on the said plates and slidingly engaged by the said cord, and a gripping device on the free end of the cord.
5. A garter, comprising a leg band provided at one end Witha hook, a cord attached to the other end of the said leg band, a plate having a stud adapted to be engaged by the said hook, a plate attached to the end of the leg band adjacent the said fixed end of the cord, segmental tubes fixed on the said plates and through which extends the said cord, and a gripping device on the free end of the said cord.
In testimony whereof I vhave signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES CALVIN ROGERS.
