ABRAHAM BRINKHUIS, OF HOSPERS, IOWA.
Wanner-I.
Application filed January 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, A RA AM BRINK- HUIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hospers, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a wrench of simple, durable and ineXpen sive construction, particularly adapted for installing or removing horseshoe calks of the removable type, but also adapted for a variety of other uses.
A further object is to provide a wrench of the type mentioned, adapted to receive the call: and after a slight rotation firmly grip the calk for screwing it into or out of the horseshoe.
A further object is to provide a device of the general type mentioned to grip a calk or other movable member for rotating it in either direction.
My invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a top or plan View of a wrench embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows an inverted plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 shows a vertical, sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 shows a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 of a part of the wrench, the call: being shown in section, taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally the handles of my improved wrench. The central portion 11, which connects the handles 10, is widened out and is flat, as shown in the drawings. The flat portion 11 is provided with an angular opening 12, which receives the angular end 14 of the member 15, the body of which is cylindrical. The end 14 is held in the opening 12 by a set screw 13.
Formed on the lower end of the member 15 is a jaw or gripping member 16, which is approximately elliptical in general plan outline, but is provided with serrations or teeth 17 and 18 on the side edges of its transverse median. line. The teeth 17 and Specification of Letters Patent.

18 are inclined in different directions, as
shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
Rotatably mounted upon the body 15 is a sleeve 19, formed on the lower end of which is a jaw or gripping member 20, which is mounted off center on the member 19. The lower surface of the member 20 is practically on a level with the lower surface of the jaw or gripping member 16. Off center with relation to the member 15, the member 20 is provided with an opening 22 extending through-it, which may or may not be tapered from its lower to its upper end, as shown in Fig. 3, to fit the calk 28 to be mounted in the horseshoe 24. The member 20 is formed with a portion of its lower surface cut away at 26. The cut away portion 26 extends through the opening 22 to the side of the member 20. The gripping device 16 is received within said cut away portion 26, and when the sleeve 19 and the portion 20 are turned to one position. of their movement, the end of the gripping device 16 enters the opening 22, while when in another position of the parts the gripping device 16 is spaced away from the opening 22. The member 16 may be of any desired width for gripping calks of different sizes. The member 15 may, if desired, be set a little to one side from the line 33 (Fig. 2) if desired for certain purposes.
The walls 21 of the portion 20 adjacent to the cut away portion 26, are curved or cam faced, as shown in Fig. 4.
lVhen it is desired to grip the calk 23 the parts 19 and 20 are turned to position where the gripping member 16 is spaced from the opening 22, and the whole wrench is lowered over the calk 23 until the calk is received within the opening 22. The wrench is pressed downwardly until the walls of the opening 22 frictionally engage the calk. The wrench is then turned by means of the handles, whereupon the teeth of the grip ping device 16 will engage the calk, as shown in Fig. 4, and a continued rotation of the wrench will screw the calk into the horseshoe 24.
Rotation of the wrench in the opposite direction will unscrew the calk.
It will readily be seen that the device may be used with calks differing somewhat in size, and the only difference in operation will be that the teeth of the ripping device 16 will. engage the calk a little earlier or later in the rotation of the wrench, depending upon the size of the calk.
It is Well-known that calks of this type are usually provided with angular portions at their bases for receiving a wrench, but that such portions are usually not satisfao tory insomuch as the wrench works them off and thereafter will not properly grip them.
In my improved wrench the calk can be quickly and easily gripped and rotated as often as may be desired for properly in stalling it in a horse-shoe, or removing it therefrom.
In this connection it should be mentioned that with a very slight variation in the" size of the opening 22 my improved wrench may 7 be adapted for a variety of uses.
It will be understood that some changes may be made in the details of the construction of my improved device without departing from its essential features and purposes, and it is my intent to cover by this application any such changes which may be included within the scope of my claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a wrench, a sleeve having a pair of adjacent parallel openings therethrough and a substantially circular depression sur rounding one end of one of the openings, said depression being of suflicient diameter to intersect the periphery of the other opening, a shank rotatably mounted in the opening having the depression surrounding it and projecting from the sleeve at the end opposite such depression, and a gripping member fixed to the other end of the shank within such depression, said gripping member being substantially equal in length to the diameter of the depression, and in width to the diameter of the opening wherein the shank is mounted.
2. In a wrench, a sleeve having a pair of adjacent parallel openings therethrough and a substantially circular depression surrounding one end of one of the openings, said depression being of suflicient diameter to intersect the periphery of the other opening, a shank rotatably mounted in the opening having the depression surrounding it and projecting from the sleeve at the end opposite such depression, and a gripping member fixed to the other end of the shank within such depression, said gripping member being substantially equal in length to the diameter of the depression, and in width to the diameter of the opening wherein the shank is mounted, the longer edges of the gripping member being serrated, with the teeth pointing away from the transverse central line.
