Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gronen C. SHEPPERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami Station, in the county of Carroll and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Heating-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such w ll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of thls invention is to provide an attachment for a heating stove which will admit of its radiating efficiency being increased with a minimum amount of fuel consumption.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for carrying out the above object, which consists of a plurality of intercommunicating drums, and means associated with the drums whereby soot can be scraped from the interior thereof and drawn into the chimney by the draft, so that the drums can be kept in a clean condition.

Fig. 6 is a front end view of the operating mechanism for the scrapers, showing the construction of operating lever therefor.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the letter A designates a heating stove of ordinary construction, and numeral 1 a vertically disposed stove pipe having its lower end arranged in communication with the fire box of the stove and its upper end communieating with the chimney, not shown. The
attachment includes a plurality of heating drums which are arranged in spaced pairs, the drums forming one pair being designated by the numeral 2 and the drums of the other pair by the numeral 3. The drums forming the pairs 2 and 3 rest upon the top of the stove A, and the drums forming the pair 2 have their interiors communicating with the interiors of the adjacent pairs of drums 3 by means of the horizontally disposed connecting tubes 4, which are located at the lower ends of the drums 2 and 3 and which have their opposite ends provided with the attaching flanges 5 by means of which the connecting tubes 4 are secured to the respective drums. The drums forming the pair 3 have their interiors arranged in communication by means of a transverse connecting tube 6, which is located at the upper ends of the drums 3, and has its opposite ends formed with the attaching flanges 7 by means of which the tube 6 has connection with the drums forming the pair 3. Connecting tubes 8 and 9 are interposed between the upper ends of the drums forming the pair 2, and the pipe 1, and communicates the interior of the pipe 1 with the interiors of the drums 2, and as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the pipe 8 is arranged in a plane above that of the pipe 9 and each.has its opposite end Provided with attaching flanges 10 means of which the tubes 8 and 9 are secured to the pipe 1 and the respective drums of the pair 2.
The stove pipe 1 has a damper 11 mounted therein, and located at a point between the tubes 8 and 9 and operable by means of a manipulating handle 12. Upon the initial starting of the fire in the stove, the damper 11 is moved to open position so as to cause direct communication between the stove and the chimney. After the fire has been sufficiently started the damper 11 is moved to closed position, causing the heated gases from the stove to pass through the tube 9 into the adjacent drum of the pair 2, and thence downwardly through the said drum and through the connecting tube 4 to the adjacent drum of the pair 3, the gases then passing upwardly and through the tube 6 to the opposite drum of the pair 3, downwardly therein and through the tube 4 and connects the last-mentioned drum ofthe pair 3 to the opposite drum of the pair 2 and into the opposite drum of the pair 2, the gases then passing upwardly and out through the tube 8 and into the pipe 1 to the chimney, not shown.
Another damper is positioned in the pipe 1 and below the connecting tube 9 and is operable by means of an operating handle 13. This last-mentioned damper is adapted, when operated, to partially obstruct the passage in the pipe 1 when draft through the drum and pipe 1 is too severe.
Rotatably mounted in the drums are a plurality of scraping members let, each of which includes a vertical blade having a length approximately equal to the length of the adjacent drum, and has its opposite end bent horizontally, as shown at 15, and then vertically to provide the trunnions 16, which are journaled, respectively, in the top of the stove A and the upper end wall of the adjacent drum. The trunnions 16 of the blades 14L have gear wheels 17 mounted thereon, which are adapted to mesh with the teeth of rack bars 18. A vertically disposed operating lever 19 is pivoted adjacent its upper end to the tube 6, said upper end of the lever being bifurcated to provide the upwardly diverging arms 21, the upper ter minals of which fit in recesses in the lower side of the adjacent ends of the rack bars 18. lVhen the lever 19 is operated, the rack bars 18 will impart oscillatory movement to the gears 17, resulting in the blades 14 scraping.
the inner surfaces of the drums so as to manipulate the structure which adheres to the inner surface of the drums. The soot when scraped from the inner surface of the drums will be drawn into the chimney by the draft created therein, and pass through the chimney to the atmosphere.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is:
The combination with a plurality of intercommunicating heating drums having scraping members located therein, each of the scraping members having one end extending through one end of the ad acent drulm of gears carried by the extended ends of the scraping members, rack bars engaging the gears, and an operating lever pivotally located between certain adjacent drums and having connection with the rack bars.
