Description

C. SELVINE.
BROOM HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29.19.
Patented May 22, 1917.
CARL SELVIN'E, OF LAKE PARK, MINNESOTA.
BROOM-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed June 29, 1914. Serial No. 848,054.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL SELVINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Park, in the county of Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to holders for brooms and the like, and more particularly to a holder of the class wherein the same is adapted to receive and retain the free end of the handle of a broom or the like.
The object of this invention is to provide a holder for brooms and the like which may be placed in a vertical position on a wall or elsewhere, and is adapted to receive and retain the handle of a broom by simply-forcing the same into the holder. l
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the class above described which is simple in construction, effective in operation and consists of a minimum number of parts which tend toward a cheapness of manufacture. a
The preferred form of my invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a broom holder in which the preferred embodiment of my invention is shown.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, the free end of a broom handle being shown therein in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which the preferred embodiment of my invention is shown, I provide a base 1, said base 1 having a longitudinally extending groove or recess 2 therein, said recess 2 terminating in a rounded portion 3 adja cent the upper marginal edge of the base 1.
A clamping element is provided which,'in the present instance, comprises a member 4, said member being provided with a supporting portion 5, said portion 5 being secured to the base 1 by nails or other suitable means 6. The saidclamping element 4 is preferably of a resilient nature adjacent the portion 5 thereof, and the main body portion 4 thereof is concaved longitudinally as shown at 7, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Disposed intermediate the end of the said clamping element 4, I provide lugs 8, said lugs 8. I provide springs 12, said springs being disposed between the lugs 8 and the base 1, said springs 12 surrounding the pins 9. The springs 11 are preferably of a slightly greater strength than the springs 12, thereby having the tendency to hold the clamping element 4 close to the base 1. In Figs. 2 and 3 the clamping element 4 is shown in the position when engaging a broom handle, the said broom handle being indicated by the numeral 13. The broom handle 13 is shown in full lines in Fig. 3, lfi ut is necessarily shown in dotted lines in As shown to advantage in Fig. 2, the recess 3 terminates preferably at a point adjacent the supporting portion of the clamping element 4 as shown'at 3 in the said Fig. 2. As shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2, the base 1 extends slightly beyond the free end of the clamping element 4, thereby facilitating the insertion of a broom handle or the like into the holder, and also permitting of a space in which to place a nail or screw for securement of the base 1 to the wall.
From the above it will'be seen that the recess 2 being of a concaved nature longitudinally, and the concaved portion 7 of the clamping element 4 coact and provide a space in which to insert the handle of a broom or the like, said space being of a substantially cylindrical configuration, which conforms as near as possible to the shape of the free end of a broom handle or the like implement. It will be readily understood that I do not desire to limit myself to a concaved clamping element, as the same could be made to conform with the shape of any handle. I
The springs 12 limit the movement of the clamping portion 4 toward the base 1, but
said springs 12 do not interfere in any way whatsoever with the action of the springs 11.
The operation of my invention, it is thought, will be clearly understood from the above description. When in use the free end of the handle of a broom or other implement is simply inserted between the clamping portion t and the base 1 and forced upward between the same, thereby expanding the clamping portion 4: against the tension of the springs-11, frictionally engaging the handle and securing the same against displacement. It will be seen from Fig. 3 that the concaved portion 7 and the concaved recess 2, as described, provide a cylindrical recess, one side of which is movable and resiliently supported, and said recess 2 and concaved portion 7 being adapted to receive the handle of a broom or the like therebetween.
While I have shown and described a specific form of my invention ll desire that it be understood that I may make such changes in the details of construction of stantially arcuate in cross section disposed in proximity to said recess and having one end thereof rigidly mounted on the base, said strip having a plurality of lugs laterally extending therefrom, and a plurality of resilient elements carried by the base and having engagement with said lugs to maintain said retaining member in a predetermined position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
