Description

R. ROEHM.
ADVERTISING SIGN. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. II. |916.
y s'rA'rEsf PATENT onirica.
RICHARD ROEHM, F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSfG-NOR TO THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
W' l ADVERTISINGSIGN.
p To all whore t may concern v Be it known that I, Rien-ARD ROEHM, a citizen-of the United States of America, and` resident of Newark, in the county of Essex `in the State of New Jersey, have invented ne '.v and useful Improvements in Advertising-Signs, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanyin ings5is a full, clear, and exact description. y
This invention relates to certain improvements in signs of a 'character particularly adapted for' advertising purposes. v
The primary object of the invention is to produce a sign of so striking and interest-- ing appearance as to immediately concentrate the attention of even the casual ob'- Server and'corollary thereto the production of a rigid, permanent structure in which they parts are 'assembled in 4a highly eiiicient manner. Other objects from the following description taken in con.- nection with the accompanying drawings:
Eigure l is -an elevation of a signtconstructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2,;Fig. 1.
The sign comprises a plate, sheet or meinV drawsurface of the indicia raised upon the plate" butto disclose the slanting or angularly disposed .side walls of the raised indicia leading from the top of the indicial to the plate as clearly shown in -43-, Fig. 1.
The indicia may be produced upon the facing in solid colors or in several diverse colors, if desired, as indicated in connection with the words Radiant and Sign Preferably the surface of the facing or celluloid sheet surrounding the indicia 4is covered .with a translucent lacquer or ink of suitable color, such as bronze, giving to the underlying plate, with its depressions, a golden appearance. I y p A border #-5- may be produced upon the facingk -1- by means similar to those used L. in forming the'y indicia thereon and ofthe and advantages will appear somewhat at an angle to the top of the sheet tallic material, such as, tin, having letters, designs, insignia, indicia or the lilre vproduced or formed in raised 'charactersthereon. Thetop or maximum raised portiono the: character is connected to the plate or 4the sheleit by angularly disposed or slanting wa s. Y
ters constituting words are Lproduced by pressing upwardly or raising portions of the sheet'metal plate -1-, the angular or Inlthis specic illustration, a series of let slanting side walls 3- of theI raised charvacters merging into the plate -`-1. and into the maximum raisedportion of the letters.
The plate "-.1- is provided'with a suitable facing member -4- of transparent, flexible material as celluloid. The letters or indicia formed upon the plate -'1- are reproduced upon the surface of the facing 'f4- by painting, lacquering or the llike with' an` p opaque substance as indicated at 4".. The inlwith the backin to give a framing effect to the border. A suitable backing sheet *6l-'- is provided qof adapted to cover the'rearsurface of the plate i Specification of `Letters Patent. Patented May 22, 1917, i Application filed September 11, 1916. Serial No. 11Q,476; i
Asuitable material, such( as cardboard and y -1- and prevent injury to the same. For
the purpose of-rigidly and permanently con` necting allv of the p'artsby substantially uni-7 tary means, the backing sheet -6- is formed of a size substantially equal to that of the complete `sign while'the facing sheet is ofy somewhatgreater extent and the intermediate plate -l--f 'is of a' sizesomewhat larger than the facing sheet. The flange and bent into contact with the adjacent edge portion of the facing sheet to confine such edge. The backing -6- is then-placed in position andthe edg-e-S- of the plate --7- is then formed upon the plate -l-f,
--1-r with the edge portion of the facing sheet having a part confined by the flange n7. is bent backwardly until 1n contact 6- to confine the same.
The bending bac ardly of the flange also tensions the facing to the .desired ex-w.
v By this construction the flanges formed upon the.' intermediate plate are utilized for permanently and rigidly contheraised characters are formed, efficiently hold the indicia or letters upon the facing Sheet in exact registrationwith the t op portion of such raised characters leaving particular construction and one Lparticular method of producing a sign of this invention in its preferred embodiment, I do not desire to limitkmy'self to any specic construction, I
y opaque portions registering With said raised portions and translucent portions surrounding'the opaque portions, and means for rigidly connecting the metallic member and the facing member.
2. A sign comprising a metallic member havingraised portions the form of a character or design, a facing member having opaque portions registering with said raised portions, and portions about the opaque portions having a coating of translucent colored lacquer, and means for rigidly connecting the metallic member and the facing member.
3. A sign comprising a metallicl member having raised portions inA the form of a character or design, a facing member having opaque portions only partially covering said raised portions and translucent portions surrounding the opaque portions, and means' for rigidly connecting the metallic member land the facing member.
4. A sign comprising a metallic member having raised portions in the form of a character or design, a 'facing member having opaque portions onlypartially covering said raised portions, and portions about the opaque portions having a coating of translucent colored lacquer, and means for rigidlyconnecting the metallic member and the facing member.
the
v angularly disposed side portion of the letters uncovered and disclosed.
Although I have shown and described one v translucent colored lacquer,
jrigidly connecting the metallic member and having indicia raised thereon, said raised indicia formed with top portions and inclinedl side Walls, a translucent facing member having opaque portions registering with the top vportions of the raised indicia.
6. A `sign comprising a metallic member having raised portions in the form of a character or design surrounded by a multiplicity of relatively small depressions, and a translucent facing member having opaque portions partially covering the raised portions on the metallic member.
7. A sign comprising a metallic member having raised portions in the form of a character or design surrounded by a multiplicity ofy relatively small depressions, a translucent facing member having opaque portions covering the central parts only of the raised portions on the metallic member, a backing member, means for preventing' relative movement 0f the metallic member and theV facing member.
8. A sign comprising a metallic member having indicia raised thereon, said raised indicia formed with top portions and side Walls, a facing member having opaque portions registering With the top portions only of the raised indicia, and portions about the opaque portions having a coating of translucent colored lacquer, and means for rigidlv.
connecting the metallic member and the facing member. v
9. A sign comprising a metallic member having raised portions in the form of a character or design surrounded by a multiplicity of relatively small depressions, a facing member having opaque portions registering With the raised portions, and portions about the opaque portions having a coating of and means for the facing member. i
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of September, 1916.
RICHARD ROEI-IM.
