PACKING-CASE.
maaar?,
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. iuay `22, i917.y
Application led October 5, 1916. Serial No. 123,810.
To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN A. LAFORE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ard-A more, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have` invented new and useful Improvements in,` Packing-Cases, of which thefollowing is a speciiication.
It is the object of my invention to provide a packing case which shall be at onceinexpensive 'and' of great strength and sim'- plicity, which is'easily opened, and which shall be particularly though pot exclusively useful for inclosiiig goods which may be rolled up spirally,^as for example in the case of sheets of linoleum, or rugs made of ma# terial similar to oil cloth or linoleum.
To these ends I provide a packing case of the character hereinafter described.
For an illustration of one of the forms my y invention may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a packing case embodying5 my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, on
enlarged scale, of a part of the packing case shown vin Fig, 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
The packing case comprises two or more sections T, of cylindrical or tubular form,V
constructed of any suitable cheap material, such as paper board or the like, which, in the example illustrated, is of atype comprising two or morelayers of paper, board spii'ally wrapped upon each other and glued,
together. Each of the end'sections or tubes T is provided with a head H of wood or other suitable material, preferably beveled or chamfered at c on` its inner, side. Embracingthe .tube T and in register with the head II is a band of iron, and nails or screws n extend through the band b and the tube T into the head H, thereby securing the tube T to the head H and reinforcing l the edge or end. The rug or'other spirally rolled goods R, or other material to be packed within the casing, is placed into cone of the sections T as indicated in Fig. 2, with its end abutting against or close to the in.
ner faceof the head H; and the other end of the material R is placed in similar relaential band B of paper, cloth or other suit'- able material. l
The interspace between the ends a, a and between the outer surface of the rug or other article R and beneath the band B forms a circumferentialchannel within which mayV be laid a string or wire S whose ends s are brought out [from beneath the band B, as
indicated in Fig. 1. By grasping either of the ends s of the string Sand pulling it, the
band B may be torn and severed circumferentially inthe path of the channel Aand there-A by disconnect the neighboring tube sections 'T which may then be removed from the contents R. `What I claim is: Y 1. The combination with' paper board tubes, of end closures therefor, spirally wound material inclosed and expanded with'- in said tubes, a vseverable band attached' to and bridging the adjacent ends of said tubes, the ends of said tubes being spaced apart to form a circumferential channel between said tubes and between said band and said material, and a string disposed in said channel for severing said band.
2. The `combination with paper board tubes, of end closures therefor, means within vsaid tubes supporting their adjacent ends,
a severable band attached to and bridging the adjacent ends offsaid tubes, the ends of said tubes being spaced apart to form a circumferential channel between said tubes and 4 between saidiband and said means, and a string disposed 1n said channel for severing said band.
3. The combination with paper board:-y
' tubes, 'of end closures therefor, spirally an end of said string protruding from the Wound material inclosed and expanded With-i` band and being unlooped.
in said tubes, a severable-band attached to In testimony whereof I have hereunto af- 1; and bridging the ends of said tubes, the ends fixed my signature this 4th day of October,
of said tubes beinff spaced apart to form a 1.916.
channel beneath sald band, and a strn dis- A posed in said channel for severing said and, ,y JOHN A; LAFORE.
