Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed August 6, 1915. Serial No. 44,009. i
provided for storing the leaves when not in use so that the leaves are always readily accessible without being visible.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention contemplates the production of an extension table that is provided with a receptacle for the extra leaves, the receptacle being disposed below the table top and carried by one section thereof, the said section having a portion of its apron made in the form of an end closure for the receptacle that normally closes the receptacle, but
which can be readily opened to permit removal or storage of the leaves.
Generally speaking the present invention is along the same lines of the types of extension tables shown in the Patent No.
905,302, granted December 1, 1908 to Mohr and Mosch, and the Patent No. 1,056,569
granted March 18, 1913 to myself, but is an improvement upon the tables shown by said patents in that by the present invention extra leaves of the usual or any preferred type may be stored within the receptacle and to which access is obtainable without separating the table top sections.
Simple and practical embodiments of the present invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure .1 is a top plan view of a table constructed in accordance with one form of the invention, the table top being shown broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view 011 the line 22, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 33, Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on taken 1 the line 44, Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 55, Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but shows a form of the invention used in connection with circular-shaped tables.
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 77, Flg. 8.
Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 8-8, Fig. 7.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, and particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 8, 4 and 5 thereof wherein the-invention has been shown applied to an oval-shaped table, it will be observed that the table shown, as is usual, is supported by a sectional pedestal 1 equipped with a top plate 2 said sections of the pedestal being provided with means (not shown) for locking the same together, such locking means being of the usual or .any convenient type and being operated by means of a slide rod 8 mounted in a guideway 4 carried by one of the sections of the pedestal. As a detail. of the present invention, it is contemplated having the operating rod 3 provided with a handle -5 that projects into a central opening 6 formed inthe plate 2, so that when the sections of the table top are relatively spaced, the operator may reach down through the space between the table top sections and grasp the handle of rod 3 and thereby release the looking mechanism for the. pedestal sections.
The table top, as isusual, is formed of the two sections 7 and 8, each section being provided with the complement-a1 aprons 9, as is usual. The apron of section 7 has a centrally hinged portion 10, forming a closure forthe outer end of a leaf-carrying receptacle, to be described. On its inner surface and centrally located, the closure 10 is provided with a vertical supporting bar 11 provided with regularly spaced laterally projecting flat ledges 12. The table top section 7 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel transversely extending side walls 13, said walls being of such a length that when the sections 7 and 8 are closed as shown in Fig. 1 of the din-wings, they also extend transversely across the bottom of section 8. The walls 13 are so disposed that they project from adjacent the apron of section 7 at each end of the closure 10 and their rear ends are transversely connected by the flat straps 14 which are arranged in regularly spaced parallel relation and form supports for the ends ofleaves 15, as is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. As a matter of detail, the straps 14 may extend through the side walls 13 and be angularly bent to overlap the outer surfaces of said walls, as indicated by the numeral 16 and suitably fastened to said walls.
The inner leaves,
surfaces of the walls 13 are provided with regularly spaced, parallel, longitudinally 6X tending grooves'l'l for the receptlon of the longitudinal edge portions of the leaves 15,.
and eachgroove of one wall may be further provided witha longitudinal slot 18 to afford clearance for the usual dowels that project from one edge of the leaves. The top plate 2 of the pedestal 1 is provided with anti-friction rollers 19 that are engaged by the bottom edge of the side walls 18 to facilitate movement of said walls across said plate.
As shown morelclearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings, table top section 7 is provided with a spring'or other formof latch 20 for engaging closure 10 to retain'said closure in a closed position.
The table top sections 7 and 8 are connected by the usual or any other convenient form of slides and cleats, designated generally by the numeral 21. A supporting strap 22 is used to connect the lower portions of the forward ends of the side walls 13,.said strap also serving as a support for the leaves 15 at their forward ends, and as the same extends transversely of the leaves, it cooperates with the straps 14L- to prevent warping ofsaid leaves.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the walls 13, closure 10, and straps 14: form a receptacle for the storage of the leaves 15 when not in use, and that such re ceptacle is so disposedthat the same is not visible. It will also be observed that the slots 18, grooves 17 ,straps 14k and 22 and the ledges 12 are so disposed that the leaves 15 are firmly supported so that sagging or warping will not occur, and that such parts support the leaves in spaced relation so that they may be readily grasped when it is desired to remove the same.
With the present invention, the leaves 15 are stored within the receptacle, and it is necessary to use the same, the closure is opened and the leaf or leaves desired are withdrawn and inserted between the sections 7 and 8 in the usual manner.
In Figs. 6, 7, and 8, a slightly modified form of the invention has been shown to adapt. the same for use in connection with a table of a circular shape. In this form of table the pedestal, as usual, is non-sectional, and the leaves are provided with aprons 23. The leaves designated generally by the numeral 24 are each in two sections. In this form of the invention, the sidewalls of the receptacle are provided with longitudinally arranged spaced parallel seating ledges 25 for the longitudinal edges of the access. being had to said ledges through the inclined notches 26 that lead carried by one of the In the last described form of the invention'the side walls seat on the top plate of the pedestal, and said walls and the said plate form the receptacle for the leaves. Access is had to the receptacle'by separating the sections. of the table top.
What I claim as my invention is 1. An extension table comprising a table top formed in two slidably connected sections, depending aprons at the peripheral portions of said sections, a leaf receptacle sections and extending under the other section in the direction of relative movement of said sections and spacedparallel walls having spaced parallel seats formed therein for the reception of the longitudinal edges of leaves, and at its ends being provided with spaced parallel supports for the ends of leaves, and a closure controlling access to the receptacle.
'3. An extension table comprising a table top, spaced parallel walls depending from the underside of the top and having their inner surfaces provided with regularly spaced parallel grooves forming leaf edge engaging seats, spaced parallel straps connecting the rear ends of the walls and forming supports for the rearends of the leaves, a closure for the front end of the walls and provided with spaced parallel seats for the front ends of the leaves, the walls, closure and rear supports forming a leave receptacle.
In testimony that I. claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of a witness.
