Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference to improvements in that class of bag fasteners for bag frames which are especially adapted for pocket books, satchels, purses and the like, and the invention relates more fully to a novel construction of a locking or holding catch connected with the frame sections thereof.
The main purpose of this invention is to provide a pocket book, purse or other frame section, with an auxiliary latch or catch which shall be neat in appearance, and shall be of a simple, strong and durable construction, with the view of additionally holding the frame members together vand independently operated from the fastener.
With this object of my invention in view, the same consists in a novel bag fastener hereinafter set forth, and furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrangements and combinations of the parts thereof, all of which will be fully described in,
the accompanying specication, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim thereof, which are appended to and form an essential part of this specification.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a perspective view of a bag frame, showing my improved fastener secured thereto.
Fig. 2 represents an end view of the frame, the hinged or pivoted frame members being represented in open relation to each other.
Fig. 3 represents an enlarged vertical section of the frame members taken on line a-m of Fig. l, the fastener on the top of the sections not being shown.
Fig. 4 represents a sectional plan view taken on line of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.

A bag frame fastener made in accordance with my invention, may be applied to any ordinary or desired form of frame. That shown in the drawings consists of two hinged frame members a and b, of substantially the shape shown in F ig. 1. Near the middle portion of the frame member a I secure'a fastener or catch c, of any desired form or configuration, and in any desired manner, designed to be brought into holding engagement with a suitable nosing or projection Z formed onthe frame member b, to firmly secure the bag frame sections or members in locked position. The middle portions of the frame members a and I) are each provided with an upwardly projecting receiving pocket, one of which serves to receive the novel spring of my improved fastener.
The improved fastener consists of a latch stud e, mounted to turn in suitably-alined apertures formed in the frame member b, which is preferably made from cylindrical metal rod, the outer end being provided with an annular flange 7, which bears against the outside of the frame member Z1 and serves to limit the inward movement of the latch when it is being assembled. A pull piece g, as for instance, a ring, loop or the like, is pivotally secured to an integral eXtension formed on the latch stud e to facilitatemanipulation., and a reduced latch-head z' formed on the opposite or inner end of the stud is designed to pass through a suitable aperture formed in the frame member a to have holding engagement therewith, for additionally holding the frame members aand b together.
The latch stud e is controlled and held in position by a spring, comprising two members lettered respectively y' and Ic, so formed that it is actuated by the flattened portions Z-Z formed on the stud and located between. the circular Hanges rre-m, by means of which the stud is rotatively secured to the frame member b.
Both of the spring members and lc are formed from a single fiat piece of metal, oic approximately the width of the inside of the channeled trame member b, and of a length to be received into the upwardly projecting poclret of the said frame member. rIhe member 7c is centrally chambered as illustrated, and is provided with the integral inturned ends n, said ends being designed to receive the ends of the member j, as clearly indicated, and by means of which the members are held together in their operative positionx @ne end or' the membeiI j is provided with an oiiset portion 0, said offset portion acting as a stop to limit the movement of the said spring member 7c and to prevent accidental displacement of the two members when once assembled.

The offset portion 0 oi the spring member y', is then inserted as far as possible into the inturned end n of the spring member 7c, so as to permit the free end of the spring member y' to be sprung under and shoved forward intov engagement with the opposite inturned end n of the spring member k, when the oset portion 0 of the spring member j will engage with the inturned end n, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Bv turning the pull-piece g in either direction, the latch stud e with its flattened portions, will actuate the spring members i and 7c, so as to cause the latch-head t' toV become either engaged or lisengaged from the aperture formed in the frame member a.
)instead of employing the spring -just described, l sometimes find it convenient to employ the modified form ofspring r illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, which is formed from a single flat piece of metal, as illustrated, and provided with an open end 71, which after the spring and latch piece have been placed in position, the open end 79 is brought together to hold the parts in their operative position.
The fastener just described, serves for additionally holding the frame members a and in locked position, and is independently operated 4from the `fastener or catch 0.- The invention is not limited to the exact embodi-v ments shown, but may be modified in varic-us ways in the scope of the following claims.
claim:
l. In combination with a bag frame, two channeled frame members, each provided with a centrally-arranged, upwardly receiving pocket, one ot said frame members being provided with a pair of alined apertures, a latch stud provided with a pair of correspondingly alined anges, said ianges designed to be received in the said alined aper tures, said latch stud being further provided with a flattened portion located between said iianges, mounted to turn in one member of said frame, and further provided with a latch head adapted to have locking engagement with the other member of said frame, and a. spring comprising two members, one member being provided with end means to receive the other member and said other member being provided at the other end with an offset to position said member with relation to the other member, said spring being located in the receiving pocket of one frame member and between the flanges of said latch stud to receive and be operated upon by the flattened portion of the latch stud for controlling the movement oit' said latch stud and for simultaneously rotatively securing said latch stud to turn in one member of said frame.
2. In combination with a bag frame, two channeled frame members, oneof said frame members being provided with a vpair of alined apertures, a latch stud provided with a pair of correspondingly alined flanges, said anges designed to be received in the said alined apertures, said latch stud being further provided with a flattened portion located between said flanges, mounted to turnin one member of said frame, and further provided with a latch head adapted to have locking engagement with the other member of said frame, and a spring located in the channel of one frame member and between the flanges of said latch stud to be received and operated upon by the flattened portion of the latch stud for controlling the movement oit' said latch stud and for simultaneously rotatively securing saidlatch stud to turn in one member of said frame.
