Description

STEPHEN D. BALDWIN, OF MARYSVILLE, OALIEORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,548, dated January 9, 1872.
SPECIFIGATION. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. BALDWIN, of Marysville, county of Yuba, State of California, have invented or discovered a new Material for the Manufacture of Paper; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a new material or fiber to be used in the manufacture of paper.
The fiber which I propose to employ is that obtained from the grass which grows in great profusion upon the tule or swamp lands ofGalifornia and Mexico known as tuleg'rass. This grass is known in botany as the scirpus la0ustris, and grows from three to twelve feet high, and is of a round body composed of an outer fiber and an inner pulp or pith.
In order to utilize this material for the manufacture of paper it is first cut up into lengths and then ground to a pulp; after which it is suajected to the same process as is ordinarily employed in manufacturing paper from other fiber.
Paper manufactured from this material will be of a beautiful firm texture and fine finish.
Having thus described my invention or (liscovery, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Scirpus lalcustm's, as anew material from which to manufacture paper.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
STEPHEN D. BALDWIN. [L. s.]
