UNITED STATES PATENT ornron WALLACE F. WOLFE, OF SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
PIPE-VISE CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 29, 1915, Serial No. 17,663. Renewed March 15, 1917. Serial No. 155,092.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALLAGE F. VVoLFn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Vise Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and tl'le'reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a horizontal, cross-section of an upright circular post, showing a top plan view of 'my improved pipe-vise-clamp applied to the post.
Fig. 21's a view in side elevation ,of the upright post with the clamp applied thereto,
showing a pipe-vise supported by the clamp.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inner side of Fig. 4 is a central, longitudinal section of the same taken on the broken'line 4:4: in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal, cross-section of an oblong rectangular post, showing a plan view, partly in section, of a modified form of clamp embodying my invention.
Fig. 6 is a top plan View of the base-plate of the clamp partly broken away.
Fig. 7 is a vertical, longitudinal section of the same taken on the broken line 7-7 in Fig. 8 is a plan view of an extension bar for the base-plate of the clamp shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the complementary clamp-member shown in Fig. 5.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a clamping-mechanism whereby pipe-vises of various kinds can be readily attached to, and detached from, posts of different sizes and form.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. of the drawings, 1 is the base-plate of the clamp provided with av plurality of slots, 2, adapted to adjustably receive screw-bolts, 3, whereby the base,4-, of a pipe-vise, 5, can be detachahly mounted upon the base-plate, 1, of the clamping-mechanism.
. base-plate, 1, the base of the vise can be so placed upon the outer side of the clampbase-plate,'1, that bolts inserted through the apertures .in the base of the vise can be passed through 'certain of the slots, 2, whereby the pipevis;{ can be detachably mounted upon the ouiertide of the clanm-base-plate, as shown in the drawings.
Along the opposite edges of the clampbase-plate, l, on its inner side are a pair of bearing blocks or flanges, (1, each havinga substantially flat face, 7, in which are formed at about the middle of the flange or block, a series of stepped seats. 8. adapted to receive cylindrical posts of different diameters.
The complementary clamping-member, 9, has on its inner side a flat face, 10, in the middle of which are formed stepped seats, 11, similar to the stepped seats, 8.
An eye-bolt, 12. is pivoted at 13 between a pair of cars, 11, on one end of the clampbase-plate. 1, the shank of said bolt being adapted to pass through an aperture, 15. in the complementary clamping-melnber, 9.
The opposite end of the clanm-base-plate, 1, is provided with an openslot, 16, and the plate is undercut or recessed on the outer side along the edges of said slot to receive the head, 17, of a screw-bolt, 18, the shank of which is readily inserted within, and removed from, said open slot.
The shank of the scrmv-bolt, 19, is adapt ed to pass through an aperture, 15), in the complementary clampirig-member, 9; and by means of nuts, 20, on the projecting ends of the bolts, 18, the clan1ping-1ncmberS can be drawn toward each other to tightly embrace between thcm a post, as the post, 21, and thus serve to support the pipe-vise in a convenient position for use. 7 w
The post, 21, is shown as a circular or" cylindrical post occupying the stepped seats} clamping-members instead of by the stepped seats, 8 and 11.
The clamp can be readily released by loosening one of the nuts, 20, sufiiciently to permit the headed end of the bolt, 18, to be swung out from the open. slot, 16.
When the pipe-vise is to be mounted upon a flat-sided post of a width greater than the distance between the bolts, 12 and 18, I substitute t or the clamping-member 9, a longer flat clamping-member, 2:2, provided at one end with an aperture, 23, corresponding to the aperture, 15, to receive the bolt, 12, and at the other end with a series of open slots, .21, into a selected one of which, the bolt, 18, can be laterally inserted; and I removably mount upon the clamp-base-plate, 1, an extension clamp-bar, :25, provided witha series of bolt-holes, 26, for the bolt, 18, corresponding in position with the respective open slots, 21, in the cla1np-member, 22.
The extension bar, 25, has at one end a tongue, 27, adapted to be inserted between the ears, 14, and between the pivoted end of the eye-bolt, 12, and the inner side of the clamp-base-plate.
Near its other end the extension clampbar, 25, has formed thereupon a hook, 28, adapted to occupy the undercut or recess in the clamp-base-plate adjacent to the open slot, 16.
For convenience in casting the extension bar, 25, the bar may be provided with an aperture, 29, beneath a part of which the hook, 28, extends.
In applying the extension bar, 25, to the base-elamp-plate, the tongue, 27, is slid into its seat between the ears, 1st, at the same time that the hook, 528, is slid into the undercut or recess adjacent to the open slot, 16, and when thus seated the pull of the bolt, 18, upon the extension bar, 25, is transmitted to the clamp-base-plate.
The last described construction is shown in Fig. 5 clamped upon an oblong rectangular post, 30.
Instead of using the form of complementary clamping-member, 22, the clampingmember, 9. may be made of suilicient length and provided with additional bolt-openings, 31, to adapt it for use with the extensionbar, 25, as well as with the clamp-base-plate, 1, and in Fig. 4 I have shown the clampingmember, 9, partly broken away.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A pipe-vise-cla1np, having in combination, a elamp-base-plate provided with a plurality of bolt apertures for interchangeable connection with the bases of different pipe-visas and having along its opposite sides bearing-flanges formed with stepped seats and with extended flat bearing-surfaces on opposite sides of said stepped seats;]
a clamp-member complementary to. said complementary clam mg member independently of the base of t e pipe-vise.
2. In a pipe-vise-clamp, and in combination, a clamp-base-plate provided with boltholes for connection with the base of a pipevise; an extension bar detachably secured to said clamp-base-plate, both said clampbase-plate and said extension bar being adapted to receive screw-mechanism; a clamping-bar complementary to said clampbase-plate; and screw-connections between said complementary clamping-bar; and either said clamp-base-plate or said extension-bar interchangeably.
3. In a pipe-visc-clamp, and in combination, a clamp-base-plate provided with boltholes for connection with the base of a pipe vise and with an opening for a clampingbolt', of an extension-bar detachably secured to said plate, said bar having a hook cmbracing a portion of the plate at one end and being provided with an opening for a clamping-bolt; a clampirig-member complementary to said clamp-lmse-plate provided with bolt-apertures; a screw-boltconnected with one end of said complementary clamp- 9 ing-member and adapted to interchangeably occupy the clamping-bolt-openings in the clamp-base-platc and said extensionbar; and a screw-l)olt-conncction between the other end of said complementary clampingmember and the other end of said clampbase-plate.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of March 1915.
Ross A. LnnUC, GERTRUDE M. P111.
