Description

May 18 1926.
H. A. MILLER LOGOMOTIVEI FRAME BINDER SUPPORT Filed Sept. 1, 1925 mvEpwoR ATTORNEYS Patented May 18, 1926.
1 I HARRY A MILLER, 01? GLOV S, MEXICOL FLCE.
LOCOMOTIVE-FBAME- BINDER SUPPORT.
Application filed September 1, 1925- Serial No. 53,897.
This invention relates to improvements in locomotive frames.
The invention more particularly relates to a binder and support for locomotive frame jaws or yokes.
In the present construction of a locomotive the members employed as a frame binder are usually bolted to the associated locomotive frame jaws or supports, and considerable time is required for removal and replacement of said binders.
The object of the present invention is to provide securing means for binders on locomotive frame structurcs which permit easy removal and replacement of the binders and which provide a substantial and durable securing means for said binders.
Other objects relating to details of construction will hereinafter appear in the detail description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing my invention applied.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing form of hanger employed in present invention for securing a frame binder in position.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, 10 indicates a locomotive frame member which is provided with integral frame binding jaws 11. Each jaw 11 is formed integral with a frame member 12 and each jaw has a reduced wedge-shaped portion 13 extending below its associated frame member 12, and fitting into a complemental recess 13 in the keeper or frame binder generally indicated by the reference character 14. It should be here pointed out that the construction just described is customary and forms no part of the present invention.
As before stated the frame binder or keeper 14 is usually bolted to the frame member 12 and considerable time is required for removal or replacement of the binders. In carrying out my invention I preferably provide an integral enlargement 15 at joint of joinder of each jaw 11 and associated frame member 12. A pivot bolt 16 is extended through a suitable opening in each enlargement 15 and serves to pivotally support a pair of hanger bars 17. The bars 17 in each instance are held upon pin 16 by a cotter 18.
Between the free ends of each pair of hanger bars 17 there is supported a cross-head 19. Each cross-head 19 is formed with a pair of pin extensions 20 which may be positioned in openings 21 in the associated ends of hanger bars 17. Cotter pins 21 serve to hold the hanger bars 17 upon the pin extensions 20. A pin extension 20 of each cross-head 19 is formed with a lug 22 which fits into a complemental recess formed in the associated hanger bar 17. As is obvious each pair of hanger bars 17 together with the associated pivot bolt 16 and cross-head 19 form a yoke supported for swinging movement and adapted to be brought to a position whereby the cross-head 19 is disposed beneath the as sociated end of the frame binder 14.
I further provide for each cross-head 19 a set screw 23. Each set screw 23 is threaded centrally through the associated crosshead 19 as shown. Each set screw carries a lock nut 24 whereby the same may be locked in adjusted position, also each set screw has a reduced end portion 25 which is adapted to enter a short bore or opening 26 in the associated end of the frame binder 14.
Vith my invention, when it is desired to secure the frame binder 14 in position the yokes or securing means which I have described should be brought to a position illustrated in Figure 2 and the set screw 23 adjusted to solidly clamp the binder 14 against the lower ends of the jaws 11. The nuts 24 should be set to prevent turning of set screws 23, and the binder is then properly secured. When it is desired the frame binder 14 it is only necessary to reverse the operation just described.
It should be here mentioned that the en-- largements 15 strengthen the jaws 11, and thus are of value in providing a more durable structure. In case these enlargements are not provided the pins 16 can rest upon the frame members 12; or if desired blocks could be provided to substitute for the enlargements 15.
I claim 1. A pair of depending frame clamping jaws, a keeper or binder between the free ends of said jaws, a pair of hanger bars pivotally depending from each jaw, a cross head pivoted for transverse rocking move ment between the free ends of each pair of hanger bars, and a set screw carried by each cross head adapted to be employed for forcing the keeper or binder toward said jaws.
to remove 2. A pair of depending frame clamping jaws, a keeper or binder between the free ends of said jaws, a pair of hanger bars pivotally depending from each jaw, a cross head pivoted for transverse rocking movement between the free ends of each pair of hanger bars, a set screw carried by each cross head adapted for forcing the binder toward the jaws, eachset screw having its forward end portion reduced and said reduced por- 19 tion adapted toenter an opening in the associated end of the binder.
