HENRY M. PETERS, 13F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMP.
manner. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 191?.
Application filed July 6, 1916. Serial No. 107,844.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY M. PETERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inPortable Electric Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to portable electric lamps, and has for an object to provide a lamp having improved means for holding a shade thereon so that shades of various types may be interchangeably employed upon thelamp base as'occasion may require.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lamp base and pivoted lamp holder or socket with improvedmeans for carrying a shade upon the pivoted member so that said shade may be removed and another shade replaced without in any way disturbing the illuminating elementherein a bulb.
l/Vith these and other objects in View the invention comprises certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
I Figure 1 is a view of a conventional lamp base shown in elevation, and a conventional shade shown thereon in section.
Fig. 2 is 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved lamp which forms the subject-matter of this application comprises a base or standard 10 of any usual and ordinary type, the design shownin the drawing being immaterial to the present invention. To the standard 10 an arm 11 is pivoted as at 2 to assume various angles relative to the standard 10 in the usual well-known manner. The arm 11 carries a lamp socket 12 which in turn is provided with a lamp 13 of any a sectional view taken on line usual and ordinary shape herein shown as a bulb.
The arm 11 also carries plate 1 1 having guide members 15 formed thereon in any approved manner as by turning the edges of the plate 14 as indicated at 15, although it is to be understood that the forming of the guide 15 may be accomplished in any usual Well-known mechanical manner.
A shade 17 is provided having a slot indicated at 18 properly proportioned to span the arm 11, and the upright edges of the slot engage the guides 15 while the end of the slot rests upon the arm 11 to prevent downward movement and the guides 15 prevent any lateral or longltudinal movement of the shade.
The only requirement for the shade 17 is in the matter of the slot 18' being proportioned to properly fit and coact with the guides 15 and arm 11, the remaining portions of the shade being cor. igured to correspond to the requirements or desires of the user.
It willsbe readily understood that the shade 17 is not retained upon the lamp structure by any fastening means whatever but only slidably engaged in the guides 15, and may be removed and replaced at will or another shade substituted whose only similarity resides in the slot 18.
I claim 1. In a lamp, a standard, an arm pivoted thereon and carrying an illuminating element, a plate carried by the arm, guides formed upon the plate, and a shade proportioned to span the arm, removably engage.
the guides, and cover the illuminating element.
2. In a lamp the combination with a standard, of an arm pivoted thereto and carrying a plate, guide members formed upon the opposite edges of the plate, and a shade provided with a slot properlyproportioned to span the arm and with the edges of the slot engaging the guide members.
3. In a lamp, the combination with a standard, an arm pivotedthereto and;carrying a socket adapted to receive a bulb, and a plate mounted on the arm between said pivot and socket and having upright guides; In testimony whereof I aflix my signature of a shade adapted to cover the socket and in presence of two Witnesses. bulb and having in its rear well an upright slot Whose lower end is open and Whose .HENRY PETERS 5 upper end -isadapted to rest upon the arm Witnesses:
When the edges of the slot engage said EVELYN GREENE,
guides DANIEL R. FORBES.
