Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
Application filed November 20, 1918. Serial No. 263,336.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. KLEMA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Mower and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to certain improvements in lanterns, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a hand type, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a color screen may be adjusted relative to the burner'as the occasions of practice may require.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a lantern of this type embodying a casing in which is supported the burner and into which extends a screen holder pro-- vided with means whereby the holder may be raised or lowered as required to properly position .the color screen carried .by the holder,-'together with novel and improved j means carried byjthe casing and coacting 2 with the holder for maintaining theholder in raised position.

as will be hereinafter more fully set forth;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, F denotes a frame of conventional type and vwhich includes a base ring 1, a top ring 2jand radially arranged side members 3. Coacting with the top ring 2 is the top T The 'lower portions-of the members 3 are provided adjacent their lower ends with the inwardly directed knees 5 soldered or otherwise afiixed. to the. upper end portion of a casing C arranged within the frame. top or upper face of the casing C is open and the lowerorlclosed end 6 thereof terminates a slight distance above the base ring 1.

An end portion of the. arm 9 is provided with a notch or recess 10 to receive the reduced portion 11 of the pin or lug 8, whereby the well W is effectively applied within the casing C.

The handle H is'ada-pted to have stored therein fuses or the like. The outer face of each row or ortion ofthe handle H is provided' with an elongated opening 16 extending longitudinally thereof and throughout substantially its entire length, and which affords means whereby fuses may be applied or removed from within the handle. Coact- "ing with the opening 16 is a hinged closure upon the handle l l and adapted to overlie the 'upper end portion of the door 17 for maintaining the same in closed position. As illustrated in Fig. '7, the handle member H-has coacting therewith a tubular section 23 telescopically engaged therewith, and
which is held in applied position by a spring -latch 2 lsecured'to the open end portion of the handle I "and coacting with an outwardly directed pin 25 carried by the outer end portion of the telescopic section 23.
The side-wall of the casing C is provided with a" slot 26 extending substantially the entire length thereof and disposed through said slot is' an arm 27 extending outwardly from the lower end portion of the screen holder M. Said arm 27 inwardly of its supported for sliding movement along the slot 26 and is maintained in substantially a horizontal pos1t1on or in a pos1t1on at rlght V angles to the side wall of the casing C.
The holder M includes an annular member 29 occupying a plane parallel to the longitusitar plane of the arm 27 and the lower or mner marginal portion of said member 29 is defined by an inwardly directed flange 30 which serves as a seat for an end portion of the color screen S. The member 29 is spaced from the arm 27 and the inner portion of 1 material of any desired color, preferably green, and the opposite end portions of said screen S are protected by the metallic annular members 32. The members 32 are connected by the strips 33 arranged in imposed pairs and between which the transarent sheet 34 is arranged so that said sheet 34 is held in applied position.
When the arm 27 is at the limit of its movement in the direction away from the burner B the screen S is in a position below or inwardly of the burner B so that the rays emitted from the lantern are white.
When it is desired that such rays of light be colored-for purposes necessary to the duties of a trainman or the like, the arm 27 is forced upwardly, and which results in positioning the screen S to inclose'the burner '13 or more particularly the flame thereof. 7 v t Depending from the upper or top marginal tion free of the door 17. The member 29 is provided at equidistantly spaced points with a plurality of bayonet slots 37 opening inwardly and each of which is adapted to receive an outstanding pin or lug 38. carried bythe lower member 32. By this means the screen S may be readily detached or applied so that screens of diiferent colors may be employed as required'or a screen unfit for use may be readily replaced.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to'be obvious that a lantern constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for useby reasoirof the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated,
and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A lantern of the class described comprising a casing having one end open, a side wall of the casing being provided with a slot, a burner supported by the casing and positioned outwardly of the open end thereof, an arm disposed through the slot of the casing, oppositely directed pairs of wings carried by the arm and engaging the opposite faces of the side wall of the casing, and a color screen carried by said arm.
2. A lantern of the class described comprising a casing having one end open, a side wall of the casing being provided with a vertically directed slot, a burner supported by the casing and positioned outwardly of the open end thereof, an arm disposed through the slot of the casing, oppositely directed wings carried by the arm and engaging the opposite faces of the side wall of the casing, a color screen carried by said arm, and a downwardly directed spring arm carried by the casing adjacent the upper end portion of the slot and at one side thereof, a wing of the first named arm being engaged by said spring arm for holding said first named arm at substantially its limit of upward movement.
3. A lantern of the class described comprising a casing having one end open, a side wall of the casing being provided with a slot, a burner supported by the casing and positioned outwardly of the open end thereof, an arm disposed through a slot of the casing, oppositely directed wings carried by the arm and engaging the opposite faces of the side wall of the casing, a color screen carried by said arm, and a downwardly directed spring arm carried by the casing adjacent an end portion of the slot, said spring arm coacting with a wing of the first named arm for holding said first named arm at substantially its limit of movement in one di-- rection, the free extremity of said spring arm being provided with an inwardly directed lip eoacting with the inner marginal portion of the wing, whereby said spring arm positively holds the first named arm at its limit of movement in one direction.
