Description

S. A. WALKER.
GRIP HANDLE FOR CAR SEATS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 9. 1 912. RENEWED SEPT.28, 191s.
Patented May 1, 1917.
UNTTFED SHERIDAN A. WALKER, OF NEW YORK,
N. Y., ASSIG-NOR TO WALKER & BENNETT GRIP-HANDLE FOR CAR-SEATS.
Application filed April 9, 1912, Serial No. 689,617.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SHERIDAN A. \VALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grip-Handles for Car-Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grip handles for car seats.
The object of the invention is to provide a grip handle adapted for attachment to the top outer corner of a car seat, which will embody such construction that it will not necessitate cutting away to any considerable extent, the frame of the car seat, so that long surfaces of the woodwork will be presented at the angle of the seat, which may be firmly secured together by glue or otherwise, thus, in addition to the joint formed by the attachment of the grip handle itself, adding very materially to the strength of the structure.
A further importantfeature of the invention is the formation of the grip-handle, which prevents a person gripping the handle, from putting the hand dangerously far through the opening.
In grip-handles of usual construction, so far as I am aware, an opening is provided, through which the hand may be extended to a point of the hand where there are no joints, and in such cases, a lurch of the car, or any jam or rush within the car, pushing such person forward or backward, will cause the hand to be wrenched, with the likelihood of causing serious injury.
The grip-handle about to be described, presents a hump or curved portion that effectually prevents the insertion of the hand to a dangerous extent, as will appear from the following description.
A still further object of the invention is to so form the opening in the handle, that it will present no angles or sharp corners at the ends, into which users can pinch their fingers.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of the grip-handle, showing the manner in which it is applied to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1917. Renewed September 28, 1916. Serial No. 122,739.
the back of the seat; and Fig. 2 is a cross sec-- tion taken on line (L'LCL of Fig. 1.
' Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the loop, which is of the same width throughout its entire length. At its ends the loop is rounded, as indicated at 2 and S, as contra-distinguished from an acute angle, so that there will be no danger of pinching or cramping the hand in gripping the hold. The loop is curved upwardly on an arc, so that it may extend around the corner of the frame 4 of the seat, and the frame is only slightly cut away as indicated at 5, to accommodate itself to the inner half of the loop, the outer half of the loop projecting beyond. the frame and furnishing a convenient grip in which the fingers of a person may be received without inconvenience on the part of the passenger. The inner half of the loop is curved upwardly, producing a hump 6 which prevents a person from inserting the hand to a dangerous extent through the opening, and by reason of the fact that the hand is stopped at a point where there is a joint, any lurching ofthe user will cause the hand to be bent at the joint, thus avoiding injury.
To each end of the loop, a strap 7 is provided, which straps are extended along the edges of the frame of the seat and fastened to the edges of the seat, as shown, thus holding the grip in position.
he entire device is preferably constructed of an integral casting of metal, such as brass, and the whole construction of the grip is such that it will hold firmly in place, without the necessity of cutting away a large part of the frame of the seat which would obviously, materially weaken the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1'. As an article of manufacture, a griphandle comprising outer and inner walls forming a hand hold, the inner wall being provided with an inwardly-projecting hump, so as to limit the insertion of the hand, said walls being provided at each end with attaching means.
2. As an article of manufacture, a griphandle for car-seats, comprising outer and inner walls and reversely-curved end walls, the inner wall being centrally provided with an inwardly-projecting hump for limiting the insertion of a persons hand, and attaching means at each end.
3. As an article of manufacture, a grip handle comprising outer and inner walls and reversely-curved end Walls, the inner wall being centrally provided with an inwardlyprojectinghnmp for limiting the insertion of a hand, and an attaching-arm projecting at right angles from each end.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
SHERIDAN A. WALKER.
