SIDE BEARING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 17, 1917.
Application filed March 1, 1916. Serial No. 81,325.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OOONNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings for Railway-Oars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in side bearings for railway cars. 7 1
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient side bearing.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 illustrates an end view of my improved side bearing in position between the bolsters, only part of the bolsters being shown in the drawing. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 33 of Fig. 2, in which the bearing is in its normal position. Fig. 4 is an end view of the bearing in a laterally deflected position.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the body-bolster of a' railroad car, and 6 the truck-bolster,-only a portion of the bolsters being shown. A bearing plate 7 is provided upon one of the bolsters, preferably the body-bolster, which is adapted to be engaged by the rollers of the side bearing 8. The
side bearing is mounted upon the bolster '6, and comprises a cradle .9 within the hollow recess 10 of which are mounted the rollers 1111, the said rollers being arranged transversely of the cradle and each having an axle 12 extending through the perforation 13 in the roller and received at its ends in the hollow protuberances 14 upon the cradle within which the axle is secured by -means of cotter pins 15. At its bottom the cradle is provided with a longitudinally extended crown 16 which near the ends of the cradle forms a convexv bearing resting upon the adjacent bolster. to the bolster by suitable means such as the rivets 17-17 passing through the flanges 18-18 with which the cradle is provided at its ends.
The cradle is secured The rivets 17-17 are applied in the usual manner and are adapted to hold the cradle first in horizontal position. In the event the cradle is tilted to either side, the rivets will be bent and slightly stretched, but on account of their rigidity will hold the cradle in any tilted position and in tight contact with the, adjacent surface of the bolster.
I claim v 1. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a bolster, a cradle, and a roller carried by said cradle, of rivets, the cradle being provided on its lower face with a crown, and the rivets being adapted to secure the cradle in any fixed position to' 3. In a side bearing for' railway cars,
rollers, a cradle therefor, a bolster and means securing the cradle to the bolster, the cradle being provided with a crown adjacent the bolster, the means securing the cradle to the bolster being adapted to hold anyportion of the crown in a fixed position upon the bolster.
4. A side bearing for railway carscomprising a cradle provided with crowned faces on the bottom thereof, a roller rotatably mounted within said cradle, the axis of the roller being at right angles to the axis of the crowned faces, the cradle being provided with perforations at the bottom thereof and extending through said crowned faces, said perforations being adaptedto receive securing means for attaching the cradle to a bolster, whereby the cradle may rock on said crowned faces directly on the I bolster.
In witness that I claim the foregoingI have hereunto subscribed my name this 16th day of February 1916.
JOHN F. OCONNOR.
